Off we go into the wild blue yonder! An incredible voyage is underway that is knocking debris and deadweight out of our minds and lives while Sunday’s solar eclipse shoots us to points unknown. This week, information abounds non-stop about all of it, the voyage, the debris, the destination and who’s on board.
The planet at center stage is Mercury, the cosmic messenger and ruler of our thoughts, minds, talk, information streams and means of getting around. Besides being in charge of the solar eclipse that will be playing out into the fall, he is active (and how!) almost every single day this week.
The chatter level will be off the charts as he teams with more-more-more-loving Jupiter Monday and Tuesday, a pairing that will up the volume (in number and noise) of messages, data and information flying through the air and our minds. It’s not just happy talk, either; lots of what you hear, say and think about has tangible, concrete and possibly financial implications.
Visitations from past loves could hit a critical point, too. They’re a by-product of retrograde Venus, who’s triangulating with Mercury and Jupiter. (She rules Taurus, the sign where their conjunction takes place Tuesday, and she’s in Mercury’s sign of Gemini, which puts her in an energetic resonance called mutual reception with him.)
The data flow only gets stronger after Mercury enters Gemini on Thursday. That’s one of his comfort zones (the other’s Virgo), and we will all feel his ease. As he abandons earth-bound mental processes for flying high and every which way, minds and tongues and information will loosen.
The noise-to-signal ratio may grow overwhelming, but jump into the fray anyway. Go after what you’ve been wanting to know. Reach out to folks. Ask questions. Converse freely. And take notes; pertinent and valuable nuggets lurk in all the tidbits you’ll be coming across. Look out for hints of what’s really going on (people will be tipping their hands, often unwittingly) and pointers to where you, they and situations are heading.
This total immersion approach will drive home the true nature of your information flow and likely prompt you to decide to cut the current on some of it — such as by dropping TV shows and Facebook so-called friends, spending less time online, unsubscribing from newsletters and not engaging with people who stir up negativity in and around you. What’s the junk food in your mental and media diet? Huge servings will tell you whether you really enjoy it, or whether you’re simply used to it.
What does all this mean for you? That’s not a hypothetical; it’s the question that the weekend will answer. Increasing clarity and self-understanding is coming as Mercury teams up with the Sun from Friday through Sunday. (As with Jupiter at the start of the week, the meetings occur first by declination and then by zodiacal degree, a one-two punch known as a super-conjunction.) Use the whirlwind of conversations and messages as information about you and the current state of your life and mind. All can open up to your delight and benefit before next week begins.

Fasten your seat belts and tie down your grounding cords: One of the most intense phases of our lives is here. For many of us, it’s the most intense yet — and, brace yourselves, that’s not backing down anytime soon.
Don’t freak; keep breathing (and reading). You’ve been preparing for this. Whether you knew it or not, you’ve been staking out a place of power, support and refuge. Plant your feet firmly onto that turf you’ve been tending, cleaning up and cultivating for the past year. It’s your platform for the dynamic, exciting and, let’s be honest, challenging pressure that’s both bearing down on and rising up in us.
Signs become unmistakable this week of just how many areas of life are heating up at once. Relationships, finances and values are up for reconsideration, with Venus retrograding in the communication and gadget loving sign of Gemini (May 15-June 27). This review isn’t a good-time free-for all, with flings for old-times’ sake; it resounds with issues of permanence and commitment, because Venus does her about-face just a smidgen shy of an exact link to structure-loving Saturn.
All manner of communication and transportation issues are hitting a power-up, too, from Sunday’s Gemini solar eclipse — from the nature, quality and content of our thoughts and information flow, to the tools we use to receive and transmit and get around this planet, to our dealings with neighbors and outsiders, to the educational and belief systems we create from all that data. (Read more in my mooncast, which will be posted on my site by Saturday.)
As if those influences wouldn’t be intense enough by themselves, a cosmic doorman is pointing and pointing into an opening for making peace with long-standing issues of separation, wounds, sacrifice and self-sabotage. (This one’s with us all month, the gift of a helpful link between Pluto the transformer and Chiron, who challenges us to turn wounds into badges of our humanity and settle into the physicality of existence. ) But wait! There’s still more, lots more, the biggest source of intensity of all, and the one that will be with us for years: the epidemic of chicken-or-egg situations involving previously secure structures collapsing because of strikes by, or triggering responses from, revolutionary, individualist, impassioned-to-angry impulses. (Noticed any in, say, the national news lately?) Personally and collectively we’re feeling tension escalating and accelerating as the two cosmic change agents, Uranus (sudden and unpredictable) and Pluto (deep-rooted and unavoidable), move into position for a fight that’ll go seven rounds from next month into 2015.
So: intensity every which way you look, and the heat’s not going down. What’s the takeaway?
For starters, forget about pulling the covers over your head and hiding. That tactic won’t work. Besides, incentive abounds to dive in and actively grapple with all of this. And the payoff will propel you into living honestly and boldly.
Notice who and what pops up now, as well as who and what depart. With Venus retrograde, people and themes from the past will resurface — maybe to reconsider, maybe to resolve, maybe to remind you of how much you’ve grown or where you would benefit to revamp your thinking. Doors will slam shut, too, some breathtakingly and unexpectedly. Do not grab the ankles of anyone walking away. It’s futile. Major comings and goings are part of the eclipse process. You can’t stop anyone, and if someone did happen to turn around, you would not really want them at this point.
Notice your thinking, too. That goes for your habitual patterns (calling yourself stupid if you forget something) as well as statements of what you believe to be true. The Gemini/Sagittarius eclipse cycle is bringing mental filters up for cleaning out. You can reboot your attitude about pretty much anything if you apply yourself now. I have two resources to help you pull this off. My article “Know Your Mind: The Potential of May’s Gemini Solar Eclipse” has tips for working with the eclipses, and my 2-mp3 set on the eclipses discusses how they affect each sign (and gives strategies, too).
When the pressure really bears down on you, work with it. What are you fighting? What are you resisting? How are you making situations harder for yourself or rewounding yourself? The potential is great to dump decades of relationship, financial and self-worth baggage, clear outdated programming from your thinking and data flow and let yourself off the hook as you have never before. You’re human. That’s not only okay, it is also the truth.
Whoa, right? Wow, right? This is an enormous opportunity. Forgive yourself for what you perceive as shortcomings. Purge the resentment and the chains of living by other people’s standards. Embrace who you really are. Plat your feet firmly on that patch of ground you’ve been cultivating. Keep your knees loose and hang on tight. The adventure of a lifetime is underway.

Catch your breath! The roller coaster is evening out. The next DVD in the series is about to slide into the player. Your engine has started. No matter which of these metaphors resonates, the impact is the same: Moving forward feels possible, even likely, at last.
This week is much, much, much less astrologically active than last. (Return to my opening sentence, rinse and repeat.) The energies that peaked on Saturday continue to spool out, of course, but at least we’re out of the intensity of their build-up.
Information is still rolling in about the power of words and beliefs, one of the dominant themes of Saturday’s lunar eclipse, which was a full moon in Gemini. (Read my full discussion of that event here.) Revelations are still part of the picture, too. A few more are in the pipeline, though likely not as huge as what has surfaced since the beginning of the month. More data is coming, too, on the ones that have already surfaced.
Some of the disclosures this eclipse is knocking loose are downright game-changing, and that will continue to the case as the eclipse plays out. For some of us, these have the effect akin to shining a light on the monster under the bed, or catching sight of a tiny gremlin that’s been lurking beneath the front seat of our car and grabbing the steering wheel with long, spindly arms. For others of us, messages have kicked over the game board we envisioned as the future and rearranged the playing pieces into startling and exciting possibilities.
Actually, everyone’s warming up to startling and exciting possibilities now that Uranus the awakener has turned direct. It’s as if a key has turned and freed us from an internal prison, and/or an unseen hand has turned up the gas jet and sent our inner flame from a flicker to a roaring fire. A raw and potent life force is blazing within us — one that makes it impossible to tolerate the intolerable any longer (c’mon, admit it; you’ve been doing that) and fuels the gumption and bravado to strike out for territory that is new, and true, to you. Each of us knows that a certain way of life — of approaching life — is on the way out. We’re just beginning to dabble in what is taking it’s place.
No rush. We will be grappling with the ramifications of all of this for some time. The planet of communication is offering help with the process. For three weeks, Mercury has been assisting in ways that haven’t been entirely welcome — throwing people and information from the past at us, snarling travel (which gave us time to ponder, if we took it instead of fuming) and stressing out flawed technology and vehicles to the point that we’ve had to repair or replace them (which ensured that we have reliable tools for the next stage). All were byproducts of his retrograde cycle, which is ending now.
The week begins with Mercury stationed (not moving). He turns direct on Tuesday — at the very degree of the Sagittarius New Moon from Thanksgiving weekend, which was a solar eclipse. Comfort and flow in communication and travel will be a few days in coming. By the weekend, we’ll be openly and actively processing and assimilating the revelations, realizations and liberations of the latest eclipse gauntlet. Our thoughts and conversations are moving to the future and what we are going to do with and about everything we’ve been hearing, witnessing and realizing lately. A distance of time and space and a clarity of perception are coming that will make sense out of much that happened during the window between November’s solar eclipse and last week’s lunar.
The big push forward doesn’t come until after Christmas, and a fuller picture of where we’re heading may not arrive till the next round of eclipses in May and June. We’re clearly and consciously preparing for take-off now, though. Think of yourself as a pilot in the cockpit with the engine warming up while you run down your pre-flight checklist.

“Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.” Really? I beg to differ. Words have a phenomenal, stealth and lasting power to not only touch us, but also spawn beliefs that mold and guide our lives. That’s part of what’s up for reexamination under this month’s Full Moon in Gemini, which is a total lunar eclipse at the south node of destiny.
The past few weeks have been escalating the intensity that always comes with a lunar eclipse. (Think of it as a super-sized full moon.) Not only do we have the heightened emotions that flow from any full moon, but we’ve got them being whipped up by the revelations that are always part of the build-up, too. If you have doubted that form follows thought (what we think => what we experience), think about the revelations that have been erupting in your life and environment lately.
You might think that a lunar eclipse involving the signs that govern communication (Gemini and Sagittarius) wouldn’t have much room for emotional drama, but that has not been the case this time around. People have been showing their hands, their motivations and their true colors in the most astonishing ways. Matters have been coming to a head not just about thought forms and beliefs, but also involving the reliability of our technology and modes of transportation, (how much have you had to replace lately?), higher education, the legal system, the media, information delivery systems (the postal system going broke and FedEx being shut down by snow multiple times), religion and foreign lands, peoples and languages. Information has been especially abundantly coming to light about embezzlement, misappropriations, scams and financial loss, not to mention the epidemic of college coach sexual assault charges (which combine the academic and law aspects of Sagittarius in one issue).
All of this has been handing over puzzle pieces that explain vast chunks of the past, going back weeks, going back years and, in some instances, going back to our earliest days. This extra-long tail comes from the Moon being at a point that represents the past, our habitual responses and what we are moving away from. That’s why so much ancient information and beliefs are in the spotlight.
The usual chapter-ending characteristic of a lunar eclipse has a much bigger potential scope this time around. We could be overturning thinking that has governed our lives. This is occurring for each of us individually; because of the collective experience that the nodes represent, it is also happening to us as a group. No coincidence that it is during the build-up to this eclipse that the U.S. Senate passed a military appropriations bill that permits military arrests and indefinite detention of U.S. citizens on U.S. soil without trial or right to counsel — in violation of the Constitution and the protection of habeas corpus that is one of the founding tenets of this country. (Read more in this long discussion of the bill’s language, background, effect and opponents.)
Don’t like that? Harness the communication imperative of Gemini and express yourself. There’s still time to speak up and, if you are so inclined, get involved. Another 18 months have yet to play out in this eclipse cycle. We’re at only the midpoint of the evolution in thought and systems that this cycle will bring.
This eclipse is a turning point, though. It carries wild-card, high-voltage energy. As the Sun and the Moon face off, long-simmering passions are reigniting. A revolutionary spirit is getting a second wind. Whether you call it courage, gumption or motivation, a raw life force is bursting forth within each of us. Something is being unlocked. It’s time again to leap without looking, to take risks, to go it alone, as each of us did in June 2010 and the spring of this year.
All these shifts are triggered by Uranus, the cosmic change agent, stationing direct at the first degree of Aries, on the same day as the Full Moon. This spot is the very beginning of the zodiac, so it contains the vitality and power of a shoot bursting from a seed. The spot is also on what is called the World Axis, which means that public events will be expressing these impulses for all to see.
The lunar eclipse and Uranus are working in tandem. The eclipse is bringing awareness. Uranus is giving the firepower to act on and with that awareness. And the celestial line-up is making sure our inner drive has no choice but to kick in. The Full Moon is making the movement-demanding aspect of a square to Mars, ruler of our drive (and of Uranus, while he’s in Aries), in the practical, improvement-oriented earth sign of Virgo.
That’s a counter-balance to the impulses that will be sparking in us. Mars may be gung-ho, but Virgo insists on going over the fine print and measuring twice before cutting. As much as we want blast-off, we’ll be attending to all manner of details before that happens. Which is not to say that some people won’t attempt blasting off, consciously or, more likely, not. So some of the demands on Mars in Virgo may involve repair work to fix whatever havoc those loose cannons cause.
More reasons for a slow take-off: The Moon’s ruler, Mercury, is retrograde and goes direct on the 13th. We will still be going over old mental territory for a few days after this Full Moon, and exploring new turf won’t come easily until about a week later, after Mercury has moved out of its direct station. The Sun’s ruler, Jupiter, is retrograde as well. We won’t have full range of motion until he goes direct on Christmas Day. After that, the skies are treating us to an entire month without any retrograde planets. The progress we’ll make will be breathtaking.
All in all, this Full Moon is an important bundle of energy and influences. We’re changing our thinking, resetting our beliefs, drawing lines and proclaiming, “No more!” We’re reigniting our engines and then taking painstaking steps to move forward. Just remember: you are what you think. So change your thinking; change your life.

Can you believe it’s December? Already?!? It may be hard to remember the time of year as this week gets going. We’re in the thick of one of the most exciting and complicated holiday seasons ever.
This week is all over the map. Truly, anything could happen. The unpredictability comes from Saturday’s double-header: the lunar eclipse in Gemini, on the south node, and cosmic change agent Uranus going direct. Situations that have felt stymied since summer or longer (most of your life, say) are ripe for radical change. You’re more than open to that. Something is unlocking inside you now that demands it. Fuel for that is also coming from wave after wave of unexpected-to-shocking revelations, which change your take on a lot of things.

Dishing It Out: The Sag New Moon Solar Eclipse of Nov. 24/25 November 24, 2011

This month’s New Moon is a partial solar eclipse that launches a new phase in how we perceive, think about and experience life. Heady stuff, indeed, with heady ramifications.
We’ve been changing aplenty in the past few months. Updating our beliefs is in order, and no aspect of existence is immune, not even — especially not — our view of ourselves. It won’t be clear for some time exactly where this updating is leading. It is already on the table, though, and very much in process.
We are in the thick of becoming aware of and resetting our relationship to how and what we think — and also how we get around on this planet. That’s the ongoing challenge of the current eclipse cycle, in the signs of Gemini and Sagittarius. The cycle started up again last Christmas and will continue into May of 2013. It’s reawakening issues and themes from roughly 19 years ago, from the end of 1991 to the middle of 1994. (You can look back in additional 19 year increments if you wish.) It will help to look at the current themes of your life in light of what you were grappling with during those years.
This week’s eclipse is in Sagittarius, which rules what we do with all the information we gather, learn and process, from the systems of thought we create (academia, law, politics, philosophy, codes of beliefs) to the media technology systems that convey them. The sign also governs aspects of life that expand our horizons by exposing us to other ways of thinking and being, including long-distance travel and people, places, cultures and languages that are foreign to our upbringing.
All of these areas are up for revisiting now and in the next six months or so, as this solar eclipse plays out. Because this eclipse is coinciding with Mercury retrograding — in the same sign, to boot — we have the opportunity over the next three weeks to come across lots of information that’s relevant to the process. As the retrograde takes us back over old turf, look for messages and insights that flesh out history and put the stories we tell about the past into quite a different light. We’re likely to get a fuller picture, discover that we made an erroneous assumption and/or question why we attached the importance or meaning that we did. In some cases, you will be feeling as if you’re hearing about a stranger’s life; that’s how much you’ve changed.
Keep that in mind when your tire blows out during an after-dark rain storm, or an 18-wheeler overturns and freezes highway traffic in both directions, or your anti-virus program goes HAL on you and blocks your computer from accessing the Internet (current, real life examples, all). You’re being bombarded with valuable data now. It’s pointing to a better, more workable future for you.

Hang on to your hats, guys! Thanksgiving week brings a one-two punch of Mercury retrograding and a solar eclipse. They’re both in Sagittarius, which rules long-distance travel and communication systems, not to mention our beliefs and life philosophies. We’re more than nostalgic; we’re all over time/space, and so are the people and issues sitting down at the table with us.
Oh, and Mars completes his trine to Pluto, too, pushing us ever deeper into incremental, curative action. Lots won’t see the light of day till spring, but trust that enormous progress is underway.
This week calls for strategies galore. My online resources are full of ‘em:
- weekly forecast, so extended that you’d best print it out for easy reference;
- weekly podcast, now on iTunes (if you’re a fan, please give it lots of stars!)
- 2 mp3 set exploring how to use the current eclipse cycle to navigate the challenging aspects that are with us for the next three years. The set is $30; more info and order button here.

Progress without movement. Action within stillness. Tea and no tea, for Douglas Adams fans. That’s what this week brings.
Think of it this way: you’re crouched in position at the starting line of a race. The official raises the starting gun, then announces a delay. You have to keep your focus, because the gun will be going off shortly. You run through the track in your mind. You limber up some more. You pull up your socks and tighten your laces.

Carbon Under Pressure: The Cancer Solar Eclipse June 30, 2011

I’ve been equating the buildup to the July 1 Cancer solar eclipse with the pressure that turns blobs of carbon into diamonds. That’s what we are right now. Some of us are blubbering blobs. Some of us are damned uncomfortable blobs. Some of us are animals acting so strangely that our people are calling the vet. But we’re all carbon being pressed into a no-going-back transformation.
It’s easy to say we’ll be bright and sparkly when we get to the other side. Thing is, that “other side” is a long ways off. So for now, trace the pressure into yourself. Don’t numb or run from the discomfort. Sit with it. Consider why it’s there. What needs to change. What is changing.
My full article on the eclipse discusses this process at length and includes pointers to my articles about all the eclipses since July 2009 in the Cancer/Capricorn cycle that’s peaking now. Read it here.
