Forecast for September 2014

September’s theme is transition. We’re changing modes of communicating, relating and using our drive. It’s as if the lights and set are shifting on a stage, little by little, as we move from summer and gear up for the excitement of the fall.

Talk, thought and travel will go through three distinct beats as their ruler cycles from Virgo to Libra to Scorpio. The first switch takes us from analytical thinking and attention to detail to graceful language, negotiation and efforts to connect , which dominate the month (from the 2nd through the 26th).  Niceties go out the window from the 27th on. Talk becomes intense, targeted, concealing or penetrating secrets and, occasionally, fiercely honest.

Meanwhile social interactions drop glitz, drama and glamour and put on sensible shoes. Venus, goddess of love, money and creativity, takes on the earth goddess mode of Venus from the 5th through the 28th. For most of the month, how we think and communicate, and how that translates into our relationships, are intrinsically connected, more so than usual. Venus and Mercury spend that time with each in the other’s house, a special relationship known as mutual reception. Neither can act independently of the other just now. Whatever happens to one resonates with or colors the other.

This linkage inclines us to cast an analytical eye on our connections, money and selves. It encourages communicating what we see and want diplomatically, graciously and maybe just a bit manipulatively (to get the best possible, if not desired, reaction). This bodes well for addressing relationship issues, thorny or otherwise, with ration and ease. We’ll see room for improvement everywhere we look. Be sure to cast that eye on yourself.

Pay attention to boundaries, too. Redrawing or protecting them will be epidemic issues when the Pisces Full Moon meets with Chiron on the 8th. Stabilizing Saturn is trining them both, facilitating a new, lasting and healthier relationship with the rest of creation  — or weighting the sensitives among us down to the point of immobilizing them. Boundaries.  Boundaries. (Listen to my free talk Navigating the Shift for tools to help you wring out.)

The 10th through the 21st is a gauntlet of twinkling relationship developments. Mundane versus spiritual love (or is somebody foolin’?) morphs into an irresistible force by the 14th (triangulation alert!), puts us to a choice, like it or not (see previous parenthetical!), and then deposits us on firm ground…which may be surrounded by clouds.

Confusing? Tantalizing? Probably. But we’re game, all of us. Mars, the ruler of our drive, heads on the 13th into Sagittarius, which increases energy, optimism and the desire to run off into adventure. He’s stoking our engines for the next round of change, scheduled to erupt in October.

The first day of fall, September 22, is also part of the set-up.  Pluto, agent of unavoidable change, stations direct on the equinox and fills the days on either side of it with the unmistakable sense that monumental forces are in play.  The time is coming, soon, for the new phase in relating — and for the payoff from all the negotiating and rearranging we did from December through July.

The Libra New Moon on the 24th sets the ball in motion, and it’s anybody’s guess where it’s coming from, or where it’s heading, or how it will land. Good-time Jupiter is sharing flame accelerant with unpredictable cosmic change agent Uranus. The excitement they ignite will propel us out of the month and into the next.

As we fly out, Mercury shifts into Scorpio — heightening intrigue and instilling us with X-Ray vision — while Venus enters the relationship sign of Libra, her second home.  Relationship cards are on the table. Show your hand. Ask for what you want. Accept it.

Decisions, Decisions: Forecast for the 2014 Virgo New Moon

August 25, 2014
7:12 AM PDT / 10:12 AM EDT / 2:12 PM PDT
2 Virgo 18

This year’s Virgo New Moon forecast has so many possible titles:  The Day of the Terminator. Lines in the Sand. The Cosmic Alarm Clock. Stop It!

However you label it, this year’s Virgo New Moon means business. It has a back-to-school, back-to-work vibe on steroids, knocking cobwebs from our thinking, waking us from summer doldrums and marshaling fierce, decisive action.

Summer will technically still be with us for another three weeks, but we’ll all be packing up our beach toys and heading for the next, more serious phase. Or finding ourselves suddenly in a vastly different environment, as if unseen hands had changed the set while we blinked.

Some of the action might sting, or stun. This Moon is applying a scalpel to all manner of situations — some long festering, some bottle-necked, some deep, dark and dank, and all ripe to be aired, transmuted, and potentially healed. There’s no room for equivocating, ambivalence, hedging bets or postponing. The Terminator is paying each of us a visit, and resistance is futile, as many a science fiction character says. In many cases he’s doing us a favor.

Everything has ramifications and consequences for the long haul, particularly in our thinking and relationships. We will care, deeply, and that caring is both the launchpad and target. This Moon may be in an intellectual sign, but hearts, passions and values are driving and bearing the brunt of the action. Attitudes will crystalize and spur monumental decisions and actions. You may suddenly see a person or situation in a light that moves them closer or further away. Clues will have been there all along; your perception is what’s new.

The Moon’s ferocity comes from the teamwork of its ruler, Mercury, lord of our information and transportation flow, warrior god Mars and Saturn, ruler of time, order and obligations. The second pair are the real source, close as they can be in the sign of Scorpio. Their fusing is the Terminator, precipitating aggression, strikes, endings, and other acts of commitment, with no going back. This could be positive, remember. It is the outgrowth of the first seven months of the year, the moment of implementing permanent changes that have been under consideration and in progress since Mars bivouacked in the relationship sign of Libra.

Libra’s ruler, the goddess of love, is pushing for action, too. Venus, overseer of all we hold dear, is in a tight, no-nonsense angle to Mars and Saturn that says:  It’s time. Get moving. Give me what I want and get rid of what I don’t.  Her shoves, and their responses, will not be subtle or boring. Pitch   feminine and masculine archetypes in high-drama, attention-demanding Leo against magnetic, primal Scorpio and passions will send off steam, erupt or boil over. (Note to relationship fence-sitters:  good luck staying put!)

Only situations with substance and staying power can survive and flourish now. The trivial, the decaying, the outmoded are all being uprooted and cast aside. Mercury’s position, in an exact sextile to the pair, presents opportunities for decluttering thinking and data streams. (Faltering technology doesn’t have a chance; be prepared to visit tech support or go shopping.) Violence, force and, alas, deaths, will turn minds around and spur people to decisions and action.

Some of that may be anything but rational.  Neptune’s cosmic fog machine is billowing away, with the Moon moving directly opposite it. That will cloud some thinking, spread some illusions or expose some delusions while Mercury is opening the door to demons, paranoia, terrors and the impulse to act on them. (“This is for your own good,” will be a common phrase. So will, “This hurts me more than it hurts you.”)

Cling fast to the higher potentials. They are plentiful, as dark as the news has been lately.  There’s a benefit to all the metaphoric snakes coming out from under rocks. Now that they are visible, we can — and have to — deal with them.

In your own life, notice what is surfacing from your subconscious and cellular programming. Feel it, then tackle it. Take action to change the role it plays:  Drop blaming other people and also yourself. Admit the often tiny ways in which you belittle and devalue yourself. Decide to honor yourself. Choose different language to tell your story.

You can achieve all this without years of therapy. That’s the marvel of this New Moon. Change can come in an instant. Truly. Cosmic quick-change artist Uranus is collaborating with Venus to spring us from stasis and limitation.  Add that to the pressure she’s putting on Mars and Saturn, and movement is inevitable.

It may make startle or shock you. It may make you wince or cry. It will make you see your heart’s investments in a new light. If you are not receiving appreciation and return, guess what? You’ve been given carte blanche to walk away guilt-free. Guess what else? The external playing out is reflecting your own internal process. Your heart is insisting on change. The most important place for that, for you, is in your mind.

This Virgo New Moon is a living phrase book of adages. They’re overused, but everso apt:  Change is an inside job. It’s all in your mind. Change your thinking; change your life.  Advice you’ve been hearing for years. It feels right now, though, doesn’t it? Yep. Make it so.

And if you find your mind wandering to worry or unsupportive thinking, help yourself to this reminder:

Somebody Come and Play: 2014 Leo New Moon

July 26, 2014
3:41 PM PDT / 6:41 PM EDT / 10:41 PM GMT
3 Leo 51

Be yourself. Everyone else is already taken. — Oscar Wilde.

The Leo New Moon calls us to live large. After the ruckus and restructuring of the last seven months, it’s time to stop reacting and step into our most fiery, outrageous selves and let our light shine.

By this point, the newly defined contours of our lives are coming into focus. They’ve been freshly drawn and to an extent redrawn as recently as this week. We’re going into this New Moon with our brains still rattling from the latest lightning bolts, epiphanies and outright disturbances, which directly targeted the situations that are falling into (or out of) place.

Now we have permission, if not orders, to celebrate what we’ve come through — and who we have become. Let our hair down, dance, strut and stomp our foot like a four-year-old and demand, “Hey! What about me?”  All the better if the act of stomping makes you burst into giggles.

This Moon is the launch party for the rest of the year, which promises to be more high energy and just plain fun than the first half.  The party’s guest of honor has a hand in that welcome atmospheric shift:  optimistic, beneficent Jupiter, which has returned to Leo for the first time in 12 years. His expansive properties take off when he’s in a fire sign (he rules Sagittarius), and they’re spreading like wildfire this weekend.

Jupiter’s cozying up to the New Moon and pouring flame accelerant onto the early degrees of Leo.  The combo is boosting everyone’s life force, energy levels and need to be seen. Passion, enthusiasm, drama and self-aggrandizing are flaring.  If some people are a little full of themselves as a result, so be it. The rest of us have benefits aplenty. The surge is increasing the voltage of our inner light, to the point that even we acknowledge and see it. And with that perception comes the push to share it — to step into the spotlight, strut our stuff, draw moths that are dazzled by our flame, and have a heck of a time in the process.

As luxurious as this may feel, we can’t laze about in it. Mars is making a harsh contact to Jupiter and the New Moon that shoves us into action. It’s his first bold move since leaving the relationship sign of Libra, where he spent seven months issuing calls for action in our relationships and social order. He put attention again and again on The Other and the role we accord to him/her/it. Now he is slamming us into perceiving and reveling in our selves — glorious, creative, fiery, dramatic, egotistical, playful, even infantile if you like.

Other people are in the picture, of course. They always will be. For the moment, though, cosmic emphasis is on the individual as center of his or her own universe.

This is the follow-up to one of  the gifts of Jupiter’s recent trip through Cancer, which urged nurturing ourselves first before taking care of others. Now the imperative is expressing yourself. Being your Self. Letting your unique light shine so that it’s visible to those who will appreciate, enjoy and revel in it.

Think of yourself as a firefly, flashing your distinctive signal to draw the playmates who recognize it.  If a relationship requires you to stifle yourself, you will find it increasingly difficult to comply.  The line-up of this New Moon can deliver the incentive and courage to make bold moves for your own self-interest.

The relationships that do get you are locking into place now. They’re shaping up, dropping anchor and flowing into deeper connecting, trust and intimacy. Some desires may still be out of reach or delayed, by circumstances or forces not visible to you. Some situations may still have a third party in the picture. Your response?  Dress up and show off. Not to get someone’s attention. If it happens (and it likely will), that’s just a bonus. The main purpose is enjoying being yourself.
