2013 Scorpio New Moon Solar Eclipse

November 3, 2013
4:49 AM PST / 7:449 AM EST / 12:49 PM GMT
11 Scorpio 15

This month’s Scorpio New Moon solar eclipse is the most life-changing milestone in a year full of life-changing milestones.

We’re crossing a threshold for which there is no going back. The break between before and after is as clean as the cut of a guillotine. It’s as if a machete is severing the cord that has held us in place and we’re being catapulted onto a recalculated course.

None of this is news. You’ve already been feeling this. You’ve already been seeing the build-up: the endings, the refocusing and the reorientation that have come to define life lately.  This new moon is taking all of the upheaval, demolition, restructuring and personal revolution of the past 18 months and parlaying them into the path to the future.

This New Moon is a solar eclipse, which blots out much of the past and launches a phase that takes six months or more to play out. Any solar eclipse has a super-sized, momentous feel; this one has that in spades. The Sun and the Moon are making a super-conjunction, which means they are meeting not just by zodiacal degree (the usual new moon set-up), but also by declination. This double-dose concentrates the characteristic of new beginning.

Add that this is in the sign of Scorpio, not exactly the realm of rainbows and unicorns, which always gives an edge of danger, intrigue, darkness, dirty sexy power and high, high stakes, possibly to the point of life-or-death. This eclipse cycle, on the Taurus/Scorpio axis, is rebooting our relationship to money, power, sharing, sex (including forbidden, secretive and triangles), death and taxes — all of which stir intense emotions, and all of which we generally don’t discuss in polite company.

We’re talking now, though, passionately, revealingly. A lot of what we’re thinking, saying and hearing has a quality of fatedness, because cosmic messenger Mercury is on the North Node of destiny. A lot of what’s coming up is from the past, too, since Mercury is retrograde and not merely next to the New Moon, but also the last planet that the luminaries touch before their own meeting.

One time frame that could come back to life is 1993-1995. From last year through next, the Taurus/Scorpio eclipse cycle is resurrecting themes, issues, people and situations from then. This week’s solar eclipse ties directly to November 3, 1994. Think back to the stand-out experiences and themes of that time; something now is connecting to them, only with higher stakes and ramifications.

That’s because the current eclipse is hitting in an environment of utter transformation. The eclipse is energetically fused with the latest convulsion in our evolutionary process, and it has an imprint that gives the latest changes staying power

The eclipse’s ruler, Pluto, lord of death and regeneration, is operating these days in tandem with two other fierce forces: Uranus, the agent of unpredictable, radical change, and Saturn, ruler of law, order and structures. They’re teaming in a way that is imposing  lasting order on upheaval, disruption and rebirth.

First, about the disorder: The eclipse reverberates with — and carries forward — last Friday’s clash between Uranus and Pluto, the latest strike in a battle that’s stretching from 2012 to 2015.  This is the fourth exact, action-demanding square between these two giants, working over the same areas of your life, hammering a message but good.  (The previous were in June and September of last year and May of this.) These clashes are completely reshaping personal and collective foundations and structures, shattering restrictions and limitations (which might not have presented themselves as such), and igniting a self-starting, individuating imperative and rebellion against the status quo.

Now, for the order: Saturn is currently doing double-duty to drive home the consequences and seriousness of current developments and to glue them into place. His special relationship to Pluto is tempering the square’s impact (either grounding situations or making them more severe). That relationship is a mutual reception, which comes from each occupying the other’s home sign and results in each affecting the other. Pluto in Capricorn is exposing and renovating our most fundamental structures and institutions. Saturn in Scorpio is making relationship and joint resource issues soberingly real, while also slowing their playing out and requiring mature, responsible behavior.

Amplifying that relationship, Saturn is also right next to the solar eclipse, and he’s the first planet that the Moon and then the Sun will touch when they separate. He’s making everything real. He’s locking those doors that are slamming behind you and vaporizing the keys. He’s solidifying situations, attitudes and relationships that are moving ahead  with you. He’s also a cosmic governor on all those split-second breakthroughs and turn-arounds so that they don’t spin out of control, or fly off the track, or proceed at a pace that would endanger them.

By this point, we’re ready for some stability. We’ve been regaining footing, sifting and sorting through rubble, rebuilding, restructuring, steeling our backbone, reevaluating ruthlessly, saying goodbye, renegotiating and turning our sights more and more toward what is flourishing or growing.

This New Moon looks to the future instead of the past. It requires an adjustment or two in personal courage and willingness to be boldly, bravely true to ourselves. Take a deep breath and go with it. The stretch is easier than you might fear.

Unlike last year’s stark Scorpio solar eclipse, or the previous Uranus/Pluto blasts, the current cluster of energies hand us a can of spinach — and steroid-enhanced spinach at that. All you have to do is take it (but you do need to meet it; it’s not going to drop into your lap.) The New Moon is making an opportunity aspect to both Mars and Pluto, the ruler of our drive and the seat of our power. You’ve got the incentive and the energy to take action, clean up any number of messes and debris, and improve, improve, improve.

With Pluto in the mix, ghosts and monsters could walk into the picture, sure. They’re coming to light so they can shrivel and die, or morph into distant memories. Besides, you’ve come too far to give them the controls. Stand firm in your personal truth and power and look ahead. Remember that cord I mentioned that’s been holding you in place? Yours is the hand that’s severing it. You’ll be in motion before you know it.

My ending words still apply that I wrote for the 2012 Scorpio solar eclipse, which kicked off this cycle:

This protracted moment in time could be the beginning of the most vital, vibrant, exciting, honest stage of your life. It is that beginning, if you make it so. Remember that. Emblazon that in your heart and mind. Gravitate to that and keep the faith, because intensity is not going away … for years. It is now part of the fabric of our life. No more hitting the snooze button. No more sleep walking. We have to wake up. We are awake. And the potential is with us to feel — and be — more fully alive than ever.

A solar eclipse is a doorway that may take six months or so to fully open (or for you to see what’s come through it.) Doorways go both ways, of course. Situations and people leave under them, sometimes breathtakingly quickly; powerful new ones come in.

Nothing is trivial now. Use the clarifying, purifying and focusing influences to simplify your life. Eliminate broken objects, patterns, situations and relationships. If the effort to put something right outweighs its value to you, out it goes.  Whittle your schedule, activities and connections down as much as you can to only what has meaning and value to you. And for that short list, you’ll find you’re willing to devote the time and do the necessary work, even if it’s scary or uncomfortable, to fit it into your life.

No matter what is going on for you, no matter what unfolds in the next months and weeks, this homing thought will lead you to the beneficial side of this eclipse:  Am I going to live until I die, or die until I die? I’m choosing “live.”  Who’s with me?

Forecast for Oct. 28 – Nov. 3, 2013

“There’s no point in regretting things that have gone to the trouble of happening.” — Horatio Fisk, in “Dean Spanley”

A powerhouse, milestone week is here. It begins with the mental equivalent of fastening your seat belt and ends with a depth charge that blasts us into wildly different circumstances.

Don’t panic! You have more than an inkling of what’s at stake. Everything that happens is an organic outgrowth of decisions, realizations and metamorphoses that are already in process.  Besides, this is the time of year when the veil between worlds is said to be at its thinnest. Take the rampant Halloween decor and festivities as reminders that you have experience dealing with — and making light of — potentially dark matters.

We’ve reached the fourth stage in the radical restructuring of your foundation that’s been going on since the summer of 2012. (The previous stages were in June and September of last year and this past May.)  Late August birthed a new phase, whether in outlook, your sense of your identity or in relation to an external factor. October’s Libra New Moon put relationships on notice that it’s time for them to change in response. Now the remodeling work intensifies even more dramatically, with ramifications stretching out into next year and beyond.

You go into this with some clarity. The week begins with thoughts, information or messages that define the situation. Actively seek them out. When retrograde Mercury meets order-loving Saturn on Tuesday, walls, obligations and responsibilities become visible. You gain a sense of reality — or, if you take issue with that concept, what’s feasible — which you can use as a grounding cord or seat belt.

From this base of stability, actions proceed with enormous efficiency, effectiveness and potency, A direct current completes on Wednesday between two forces of will, Mars and Pluto, whose teamwork makes elbow grease unnecessary. Scant pressure leads to huge progress, deep cuts (need to get ride of anything?) and long-lasting effects.   Too, a divine hand is wielding a scalpel, which may strike without warning. Cuts will be clean and so quick that you don’t feel them till afterward.

These are just the warmup to the big events, which are occurring so close together that we won’t be able to distinguish their impact:  the exact Uranus/Pluto square on Friday and Sunday’s solar eclipse in Scorpio. Their effect is a cluster of explosive, deep, monumental endings, reshaping, and dramatic new starts.

The square is a culminating moment in the ongoing clash between the agents of unpredictable and unavoidable change, Uranus and Pluto. (For the context, read my article Clash of the Titans.) They are hitting the same territory, themes and issues for the fourth time in 18 months. This assault, is different, however, because it has curative properties.

The therapeutic potential comes from the role being played by Chiron, who embodies our abiding wound and the challenge to rise above it and master physical existence.  We have to
reach for his help just now, but the rewards are worth it. Pluto, lord of death and regeneration, is making an opportunity aspect to the dwarf planet of healing, while Uranus the awakener is in a growth aspect.

Watch for a sense of light hitting and curing dank, rotting places, of mold being remediated, and of a boil being lanced. Hidden threats and decay are coming to consciousness, and the potential is enormous for resolution and healing as a result. You might not like everything you see, but be honest; isn’t it better to know what you’re facing, so you can address it, rather than allow it to fester and grow?

You may fine-tune the restructuring you’ve been doing, ditch some plans and dream up something better. It’s also highly possible that you will jettison longstanding baggage for good. This dovetails completely with Sunday’s New Moon, a solar eclipse in Scorpio, and the third rebooting event in the resources-focused eclipse cycle we’re in from last November through next year.  This one is uncommonly intense and life-shaping for several reasons.

Eclipses always shut shut out situations and people. Deaths, endings and metaphoric plastic surgery will be rolling out for months from this eclipse. That’s not only because it’s ruled by Pluto, lord of transformation, but also because of his current clash with Uranus. Everything that happens now relates directly and immediately to the upheaval and restructuring you’ve been undergoing.

Everything that departs is making room. That’s a common platitude, but absolutely pertinent now. A solar eclipse reorients and catapults you far.  As you fly ahead, your load is lightening, your focus is tightening, and your self-actualization is ramping up to levels you’ve never experienced.  Distractions and trivialities have no little place or appeal. Taskmaster Saturn is on top of the eclipse, and calling for maturity, responsibility and commitment.

You know better who you are. You are more comfortable showing your true self to the world. You see more clearly your worth and talents, as well as the comparative costs and benefits of each emotional, financial and energetic investment. Acknowledge, honor and thank those who have already departed (Saturday is, after all, All Soul’s Day), as well as those who are parting from you now. Then face forward. Read more about the eclipse in my mooncast, which will be posted by Saturday.

Forecast for Oct. 21-27, 2013

The sky is not falling. On the other hand, Halloween’s turning into a two-week event.

Things that go bump in the night are on the prowl, and they’ve got company: secrets, power ploys, primal desires and huge moneyed interests throwing their weight around. Their prominence comes from the dominant influence in the sky being Scorpio, sign of death and regeneration. It’s the center of the week’s big action as we gear up for next month’s milestone events, the solar eclipse in Scorpio and the sign’s ruler, Pluto, heading into the ring once again with Uranus.

The big influence affects how we think, communicate and get around. Mercury, the ruler of our information and transportation vehicles, begins a three-week retrograde on Monday, in the sign of Scorpio. Retrogrades always summon the past, in the form of messages, data and decisions that shed new light or require rethinking. Be prepared to revisit matters of great and deep meaning, value and cost. Be prepared as well for this retrograde to pry loose monsters, terrors and particularly unpleasant information as it slowly stirs some dank and murky waters.

This has extreme potentials. On one hand, the fast, unfettered clip that Mercury prefers does not come easily in water, which slows movement and inspires some people to thrash about and expend additional effort. Slowness is especially a trait at the beginning of the retrograde cycle, i.e., now, when Mercury is barely moving. Go into the week braced for everything taking longer than you would expect — people getting back to you, traffic, public transportation, even getting your own brain to work.

On the other hand, water is an excellent transmitter, and it will carry you along if you don’t fight it. Add to that the lie detector and X-Ray vision that are built into Scorpio, and you can pull off productive and powerful sleuthing during this retrograde. Do return to old business and dig deeper than before. So ickies will be squirming under some of the rocks you pick up. Ickies have a way of shriveling or disappearing in the light.

Remember that last week’s Aries lunar eclipse is still very much in effect, and relationships are still unspooling. This retrograde can reveal more of the story and/or afford the opportunity for deep and honest conversation.

The Scorpio emphasis grows on Wednesday when the Sun slips into the water, where Mercury, Saturn the enforcer (who’s there till the end of 2015) and the North Node of our collective experience are already waiting. His first act is setting up an open channel to Neptune, ruler of magic and illusion, higher love, and transcendence. Set your dials to “divine guidance” and watch what happens. Information and realizations will pour in, and you’ll be in the right place at the right time, under circumstances no mortal consciousness could have orchestrated.

Tuesday, Oct. 22 at 6 PM EDT I am discussing Mercury retrograde with Jessica Costello and Jill M. Jackson on the CBS New Sky Radio show Windows to the Soul with Jess and Jill. Listen live or in the archives afterwards.

2013 Aries Full Moon Lunar Eclipse

October 18, 2013
4:37 PM PST / 7:37 PM EST / 11:37 PM GMT
25 Aries / Libra

The fall eclipse season is here, and with it yet another tweak in focus. This week’s Aries Full Moon is a graduation exercise in how we maintain our identity in the context of relationships. No matter what else is going on in your life, the starting point is and remains yourself.

We’re not completing this work, of course, but going from one stage of relating to another. Revisiting and rewriting how we get along with each other is a core theme for the next 18 months, which brings six eclipses on the relationship axis of Aries/Libra. The kick-off event is a lunar eclipse, which is a full moon on steroids, escalating emotions and casting light onto matters that have not previously been in clear view.  This week’s event is accelerating the door closings on old ways or relating and amping up the incentive and drive to be more fully, boldly yourself, come what may.

Though you may go into metaphoric battle with a well-considered strategy, each key development has a fiery, impulsive, intuitive component. Emotions, realizations and revelations are not so much dawning as igniting. That could spark assertiveness, aggression, anger, and awakening to a new level of self-awareness, self-promotion and gutsiness.

The ruler of the Aries Moon is action hero Mars, the planet in charge of how we use our energy. His boisterous, shoot-first-and-ask-questions-later inclinations are tempered at the moment, for two reasons. He is traveling in the earth sign of Virgo, which requires moving in a more measured, thoughtful and discriminating manner than is his wont. He is also in an exact opposition with Neptune, who unhinges us from earth-bound existence with poetry, spiritual highs and baser forms of escapism (lies, delusion, alcohol, drugs, distracting ourselves online or in front of the TV).

Oppositions provide distance, so some eclipse revelations may flesh out people’s actions and motivations. Be on the lookout for smokescreens and lies coming to light. You may find yourself wondering what is truth and what is illusion. Oppositions also require compromise to find a common meeting ground. For most beneficial approach, invoke Neptune’s higher qualities of compassionate, oneness and spiritual love.

We last experienced a lunar eclipse at this degree on April 15, 1995. Thinking back to that spring will clue you in to some of the themes and issues returning for you now. The difference is that the positions of the Sun and Moon are flipped (Libra and Aries instead of Aries and Libra) — and that the stakes, and intensity of upheaval, are far, far greater now.

Backsliding is not a choice. We burst out of previous confines in August, when a cardinal t-square birthed a new phase for each of us. Last month’s Libra New Moon demanded radical, foundational restructuring of specific relationships and our approach to relating in general. The playing out of that New Moon is building the platform for the first seven months of 2014, when we will grapple with relationships but good. The next way station in the process comes in April, with the Libra Full Moon lunar eclipse at the same degree as this week’s event.

Until then, we are lightening our load in preparation. Next month’s New Moon, which is a solar eclipse in Scorpio, will shoot us into a refocused direction for resources, sharing, trust and intimacy.  Emotional packrats are being challenged to scale back. Lift-off will go everso much easier if you’re bringing along only what you truly value, need and use. And for that sorting process, the focus is on you. Not only what the other person needs, or what you assume s/he wants, or what you were told relationships were supposed to be about. Nope:  You.  Be honest with yourself. Be mature (though you’re going to see a lot of inner four-year-olds rampaging.) Be boldly, unapologetically you.

Forecast for Oct. 14 – 20, 2013

This is a week of revelations, hair-pin turns, emotional flare-ups and breakthroughs, and doors. Lots of doors: opening, falling, disappearing or slamming shut and locking behind you.

The potential is high for drama, for exhilaration and for relief. Certain puzzles may make sense at last. Others may lose their appeal.

Dynamite is going off in all manner of log jams, impasses and stuck places, particularly involving relationships, desires, creativity and financial matters. Enthusiasm will fuel a lot of the explosions, as the two über-feminine influences, Venus (goddess of all we value) and the Moon (expresser of our emotions), contact Uranus, agent of awakening, unpredictable change.  With this volatility, hearts’ desires ignite without warning, or send sparks into a direction you did not foresee.

A bigger force is behind the switches, endings and reorienting, however:  Friday’s Aries Full Moon, which is a lunar eclipse and the first event in the Aries/Libra eclipse cycle that will be with us into 2016. A lunar eclipse is a full moon on steroids, lighting up factors that have been going on out of your line of sight. This week’s emotions, revelations, realizations and chapter closings largely involve the often uneasy balance between self-sufficiency and having other people in our lives.

You might feel absolutely on your own. You might be furious that you have to do all the work to keep a relationship going (in which case…why?), whether that’s a specific connection or a general pattern or dynamic. And you might be the one kicking down the door and rushing out of — or into — a situation.

Look at everything as lightening your load and emboldening you, even (especially) if you don’t welcome the development. You’ll be glad, ultimately, when next month’s Scorpio New Moon solar eclipse catapults you forward. More’s in my mooncast, which will be posted by Thursday.

Throughout all this, two valuable tools are at your disposal. The first is the shift in impulses to sensible, practical strategies and action. This comes from Mars, ruler of our drive as well as the lunar eclipse, moving on Monday into Virgo, the fix-it sector of the zodiac. While hearts are bursting into flame, the guy that has to fulfill their orders will be taking a slow, step-by-step approach in carrying them out.

The second is the superb perception that’s for the having if you’ll trust your inside eyes and ears. Mercury, the planet of our information and traffic flow, is treading water in intense, secretive, power- and monster-laden Scorpio. By Saturday he, and all he rules, will feel motionless as he slows to turn retrograde at the beginning of next week.

Painstaking action meets slow-moving communication and travel. Hmm. Well, in the midst of eruptions and changes, this combination benefits you.  It clears your field of vision. Movement muddies water, while stillness allows silt to drift to the bottom. The combination also encourages stepping outside of time and letting your feet, hands, mind and words go to the right, sure place as you navigate this exciting week.

Do rely on radar, sonar and non-empirical perceptions over the weekend. Mars is opposing the least grounded influence in the sky, Neptune. Objects in mirror are closer than they look. Or further. Or not what they appear to be. Same with motivations.

You get the idea.

Tuesday, Oct. 15 at 8 PM EDT I am wrapping up the year astrologically with Sarah De La Mer on the CBS New Sky Radio show Best of the Best. Listen live or in the archives afterwards.

Forecast for Oct. 7 – 13, 2013

The seismic activity from week’s Libra New Moon continue to radiate out this week. While we figure out what we are going to do with each other, a welcome element joins the mix. Venus, the ruler of all we value, enters fun-loving Sagittarius and offers us a quiver full of hope, optimism, adventure and panoramic vision.

This bodes well for the tone of the relationship restructuring going on. True, Sagittarius can take a “my way or the highway” position, but you can head for the sign’s other possibilities. Don’t take developments as deadly serious. Find reason to smile and laugh. Treat the process as a game. You may get the hang of the rockiness.

Venus’ change of mode inclines us all to look for good times and for silver linings, too. It’ll be easier to see the benefit in much that has been transpiring, or to turn situations to the better.

Vision might be a bit too rosy at times, though. Expectations and perceptions could get out of line midweek, as Venus clashes with Neptune and whips up his cosmic fog machine. The eyes of love can overlook many a flaw. Just take care that they do not blind you to deception, or cause you to read more into a situation than is there.

Even with that, the week has an expansive buoyancy that carries us into the weekend. Life teems with possibilities. This new phase in relating has an exciting, invigorating side. Breaking from the past is freeing up energy and giving us a new focus. By the weekend, you could be feeling quite satisfied with yourself. Or demanding more of the pie. Or both.

2013 Libra New Moon

October 4-5, 2013
5:34 PM PST / 8:34 PM EST / 12:34 AM GMT
11 Libra 56

by Kathy Biehl

This month’s Libra New Moon is forcing structural changes in our foundations. The very nature of how we treat each other is up for fundamental review and revision.

Libra deals with relationships, fairness, harmony and balance, though the last three are more characteristics to be sought than inherent traits. This Moon affects all of those as it builds on the process of (r)evolution that has been ongoing since June of last year. (Actually, the years from the summer of 2009-2011 laid the groundwork; thinking back over how you refocused your life then could be productive.)

Whenever a component in a system changes, the rest of the system rearranges itself in response. Every person, and every situation, underwent some form of individuation in mid-to-late August. The changes that burst forth — which may have been entirely internal — are now forcing massive shifts in relationships, agreements and basic situations in our lives.

What’s going on now has an organic quality to it; much is transforming without your having to nudge or mold or suggest. You are sending out a different vibe about how you are willing to be treated, and people are responding. Haven’t you been noticing a switch in the character of your connections? Some are growing more open and easy. Others, even long-lived ones, are evaporating as you suddenly have little to say to each other (without any external provocation).

You can, of course, play an active, assertive role in this process. Conscious reshaping, is not only certainly possible, but also advisable. You have a clearer understanding of — and comfort with — yourself, certain key goals and certain key priorities, and that carries over into all your interactions. This Moon opens a portal to moving from that understanding into rewriting your personal relationship rule book, as well as the ground rules in existing and new relationships. This may involve direct renegotiation, but it doesn’t have to. You will likely simply behave differently, make different conscious choices, and set up different expectations.

Developments could be startling and raw and catch you so by surprise that you go into shock (even from the good ones). Some of you have already been seeing relationships crack open — or apart — without warning, for reasons you had no way to see coming. Factors that have been dormant are rising to the surface,  demanding attention and steering events.

Power is also a huge consideration.  (Perhaps you’ve noticed this in the national news?) Power games, power plays and bullying are rampant. So are standing firm and steadfast in your personal truth, standing up for yourself in the face of aggression or a guillotine blade, acting with integrity and keeping your conscience squeaky clean.

The role of power comes from the astrological configuration around the Moon. The New Moon is locking into the ongoing clash of the two cosmic change agents, radical, awakener Uranus and Pluto, lord of metamorphosis. The effect is pressure coming from the New Moon (a new phase in relationships) and from Uranus (radical change) onto Pluto, the ultimate powermonger, in the sign of structures, institutions, long-term goals and security.  All of those are making seismic shifts from the impact. Think tectonic plates moving about and creating caverns, mountains and new terrain.

This level of change takes a while to play out.  This New Moon, the first of the fall, colors the entire season, and what starts now will be with us, in development, for a while. Valuable information about the process is within reach by Sunday. Be courageously honest with yourself. That is the place of departure for all the restructuring to come.
