Forecast for Dec. 2-8, 2013

The holiday season is off and running, and our attitudes are catching up with the calendar (and commercial behavior) at last. Nostalgia’s to be expected as we get into the spirit this week, but it’s short-lived. The clouds will fade to show that old traditions are losing their clockwork appeal, while new approaches are gaining ground.

The starting bell sounds with Monday’s New Moon in buoyant Sagittarius, which kindles  inner fires and warm spirits. They’re burning differently this year, though, because of a boost from Uranus, the awakener, agent of unforeseeable change and advocate of alternate viewpoints. The combination is sending off sparks of innovation and egging us on to take risks, shake up our givens and have fun in the process. (Read more in my mooncast.)

Thinking and communication become more excited (and excitable) starting on Wednesday, when cosmic messenger Mercury leaves the heavy waters of Scorpio and warms himself by the fire of Sagittarius. Conversations and the air will lighten up; people will be more jovial and inclined to see the humor in situations. His stay is brief, only until Christmas Eve, but those two weeks will bring enthusiasm, a sense of possibilities, and  running around like crazy.

This weekend, his hard contact with illusionist Neptune kicks up clouds of romanticism and nostalgia. Approach them like cotton candy: Indulge a little (you’ll want to on Sunday, no matter how much you object in advance to the concept), but not too much, lest you get woozy — or a tummy ache.

The sweet confusion has a limited shelf life, but the weekend’s other atmospheric shift will last through July. You’ll have to work at being alone this holiday season, because that will not be the natural order.  Relationships and the art of language, negotiation and, let’s be honest, war are taking center stage when Mars, the planet that rules our ambitions, drive, motivation and energy, moves into Libra on Saturday.

Although he usually zips through a sign in a only a few weeks, Mars is spending the first half of 2014 in Libra, which operates as Relationship Central. One upshot:  Like it or not, we will be pouring energy into figuring out how to coexist with each other.

We started constructing a new platform for that (in our minds, at least) with the Libra New Moon at the beginning of October. Watch for openings and impulses now to implement new approaches and decisions that started dawning then.

We’ve all undergone phenomenal changes throughout the year, and we’ll be dealing with each other differently this holiday season. The big shakeups are scheduled in the last week of the month, when Mars locks into the ongoing battle of cosmic change agents Uranus and Pluto. For now, notice who you feel drawn to, who approaches you, and what you decide to do together. It will not recreate your past. The changes could create your vision, though.

Forecast for December 2013

A holiday atmosphere is with us from the get-go. Fun and adventure-loving Sagittarius hosts the New Moon on the 2nd, then welcomes cosmic messenger Mercury on the 4th as he shakes off the heaviness of Scorpio and heats up communication for his brief two-week stay

Efforts and energies relocate to the new relationship platform we unveiled at the beginning of October, when action hero Mars moves into Libra on the 7th. He is launching an extraordinarily  prolonged, and flat out extraordinary journey through that sign that will last through July — and outfit us for battle come April. For now, he’s directing focus to negotiation and give-and-take. The first report on how what that’s faring comes with the chatty, data-drenched Gemini Full Moon on the 17th.

Venus is also setting out on her own long journey December 20, when she begins a retrograde in Capricorn that will extend to the end of January. This is unfortunate timing, since she rules money, relationships, possessions and other matters we value.

As with a Mercury retrograde, the Venus edition puts agreements and major purchases at risk. Finish your shopping early if you can. Last-minute purchases are likely to disappoint or require returning. This is also not an auspicious time for engagements, weddings or launching a business.

Instead, this retrograde is suited for rediscovering what’s most important to you and reconnecting with old friends. Sounds like New Year’s, doesn’t it?

The winter solstice comes on December 21, when the Sun enters Capricorn. The winged messenger Mercury follows suit on the 24th. Thoughts and talk turn practical and goal-oriented, amplifying year-end reviews.

The year goes out with a bang thanks to a gauntlet of volatile, even incendiary planetary aspects from Christmas Day through New Year’s Eve. Tempers and frustrations flare. Minds are made up. Comfort zones are exceeded; hands are forced; words are exchanged.

Take special care on the 25th and the 30th, especially behind the wheel, when the god of war clashes with change agents Uranus and Pluto.  Some outbursts will move forward on developments (or deepen fractures) dating to early May and November. We’re ringing out the year as the dust settles from breakups, breakouts and breakthroughs — all opening the door to the first seven months of 2014.

Forecast for week of November 25-Dec. 1, 2013

‘Tis the week of Thanksgiving and all through the house, minds are firmly taking charge of their mouths. That’s advisable for any holiday week, and fortunately it’s exactly what the skies are encouraging now.

The extended outlook is favorable for that tactic staying in place and relationships flowing smoothly, except, no surprise, on the afternoon and evening of Thanksgiving Day itself. Well, after all, we are only human. Whatever disruptions and discomfort surface, they’ll be history (or rocket fuel) by Sunday, when personal prisons fly open and we give ourselves freer rein.

Compared to the beginning of the month, the planetary activity is minimal and relatively gentle. Mercury, ruler of communication and getting around, meets with structure-loving Saturn on Monday. Minds calm. Thoughts, messages and conversations turn serious, practical and realistic.

That sureness smooths the way to a cooperative link on Wednesday between Mercury and Venus, ruler of our hearts and desires.  Openings pop up to connect, to converse and generally convey your heart and mind, to audiences that are more than amenable.

Chatter and sociability ramp up on Thanksgiving morning, when Mercury and Venus make contacts to cosmic party guy Jupiter. Everyone has something to say, and how. The connecting and general running around spirals up and up and up until internal rumblings start.  You’re getting a long-distance view of dynamics that are stuck in the past, and those rumblings are indicators of what your soul longs — needs — to change.

You’re on the way. The seismic activity is part of your personal journey of evolution. Next stop: Sunday, when the Sun opens a channel to the liberating genius of Uranus. Stuck? No way. You may be startled by what opens up, but stuck is one thing you will not be.

2013 Taurus Full Moon

November 17, 2013
7:15 AM PST / 10:15 AM EST / 3:15 PM GMT
6  Taurus 45 / 6 Scorpio 45

This month’s Taurus Full Moon casts light on the physicality of your existence. How satisfied are your appetites? Do you have enough? More precisely, do you have enough of what you want?

Your current answers to those questions differ wildly from what you would have said last summer, and probably even last month.  They’re already on your mind, too, because desires and satisfaction of same have been dominating the radar all week. The Taurus Moon’s ruler, Venus, has been on tear with the two cosmic change agents, Uranus (unpredictability, genius and liberation) and Pluto (unavoidability, primal, non-rational impulses and metamorphosis).

Her journey this week has freed you from some desires and connections. It’s awakened you to others, or blasted barriers or them. It finished off some, for good, while a few have drawn you in with the power of a tractor beam. Even though the process created rubble (and may have triggered tears), the Moon is growing full in a soothing, therapeutic environment, with cooperation and mutual support flowing between the masculine and feminine, willpower and hearts, and, in some cases, men and women.

The potential is high for feeling good and comfortable with your life at this point — not in some distant, dreamed-for future, but here and now. The Taurus Moon reminds us of the fact and importance of physicality. Spiritual energy does imbue physical existence, but the earth plane is where that takes place. We are, in the words of the French philosopher Pierre Teilhard du Chardin, spiritual beings having a human experience.

You’ve recently decluttered so much — relationships, possessions, financial arrangements, desires, priorities. What remains is simplified and important. If you’re still amid clutter, or in the throes of situations that do not feed your heart, invoke the purifying vibe that is still in the air. Don’t settle for junk food, metaphorically and literally.  Your body and your soul crave and deserve sustenance.

No matter what has transpired in your life lately, sink into the fullness of what remains.  Honor this Moon with sensual comforts (by your own definition): foods, activities, even clothing.

And tackle that question of whether you have enough. It’s so natural to want more, but the fact of wanting can paradoxically push it away. Rewrite that question. Instead of looking from a perspective of lack or missing, acknowledge what you do possess. Embrace it. Enjoy it.

For another take on this week’s events, please read my extended weekly forecast and listen to my quickie podcast.

Forecast for week of November 18-24, 2013

This is the most quiet week in a most tumultuous month. Yet within that stillness, sounds are stirring:  sounds of opportunity knocking.

Big strides forward are possible, with boundless Jupiter offering a step-up to action figure Mars on Tuesday. Watch for chances to expand your efforts, upgrade your targets and accelerate your pace.  Doorways that open now could prove both beneficial and healing. The trick to doorways, remember, is that they stay in one place (unless, of course, you’re in a fantasy); you’re the one that moves.

Information, messages, research and realizations bubbling up from your depths are unlocking some of those doorways. Mercury’s helpful link to Pluto, on Wednesday, has the power to solve mysteries, deliver powerful data and transform your thinking radically and forever. If you’ve been needing to take out the garbage, a cosmic bin could appear for it.

An uptick in optimism, good will and belief in possibilities arrives on Thursday with the Sun’s move to adventure-seeking Sagittarius. We’re all more susceptible to Sag’s ruler, the big guy, Jupiter, who’s nudging us to take chances, to have some fun and to have second helpings and, what the hell, dessert, too. As for those of us who’ve been grumbling over the holiday displays that have been creeping into stores for weeks, watch us succumb to his golden glow and climb aboard the holiday express.

Warm spirits have another source as the weekend rolls around. That comes from the aftermath of the adventure our hearts went through last week as Venus, goddess of all we hold dear, slam-danced with the change agents Uranus and Pluto.  Saturday she fields a solid offer from Saturn, lord of structure and tradition. Relationship and financial matters become real. Ones that have been up in the air come down to earth; others find containment or take a recognizable form.

Some of what shapes up might not be as shiny or sparkly as you’d have liked, but it will have staying power. Think wash-and-wear fabric instead of silk, or, better yet, instead of a lamè that dazzles on stage but falls apart in the wash. The Sun’s clash to illusionist Neptune on Sunday is testing our perceptions, especially of ourselves and our lives. If Jupiter’s been egging you on too far, you might discover you’ve been fooling yourself. Guidance and meaningful insight can emerge from this, too. Ride the clouds of fantasy, but keep your eye on the ground. If not your feet as well.

Forecast for week of Nov. 11-17, 2013

This week the ground stays in its current condition and place, mostly, while your mind and heart field information and move things around.  Insight, inspiration mingle with optimism, leading to breakthroughs and monumental decisions of the heart by the weekend.

Now that air traffic controller Mercury is looking forward again, communication and travel issues are clearing and easing up, especially after Mercury begins noticeably moving midweek.  We’re working with water, and how, much like last July and August (which might turn out to be relevant time frames). Emotions and mysteries are swirling and surfacing, some of which you’ve been anticipating or needing.

Watch for important information wafting your way. The channel is open to non-rational, non-worldly guidance, thanks to a link between Mercury and Neptune, overseer of transcendence, magic and higher love. Ask for insight, clues, answers and miracles; there’s a greater than usual probability for any of those materializing. Let yourself be led and you will end up in the right place at the right time.

Of course, this kind of flow is also susceptible to a lot of hooey. Exercise discernment. Ask for reality checks. Give your inner ears and voice more credence than the outer ones. If something particularly delusional or deceptive surfaces, look for the possibility that it will lead to soothing, healing, dispersal or resolution.

Coinciding with this info-fest is a surge of optimism and cheer and possibilities, along with a just plain surge in emotional energy. Jupiter is just beginning a four-month retrograde, while Neptune is turning direct, and the push-pull from their changes in direction is pushing a lot of metaphoric water around, dramatically. It’s teeming with wish fulfillment. Choose wisely. You could get something very close to what you want, and it will have staying power. (Cautionary tales of worst-case scenarios:  “The Chaser” by John Collier and “The Monkey’s Paw” by W.W. Jacobs.)

Back on shore, the week’s big action is Venus’ apache dance with the cosmic change agents Uranus and Pluto. The upheaval and refocusing of the past few weeks is now bearing down on relationships, agreements, desires, financial arrangements and value systems. What’s your bottom line? What do you truly value? That measuring stick will be tested, and how, as we run all the change impulses by our heart.

The building tension finds release on Thursday, when Venus’ clash with Uranus unleashes lightning bolts (and strikes) that disintegrate locks, barriers and limitations. On Friday, as she merges with the primal instincts of Pluto, we stand in the rubble (or daylight) and a cry roars up from our very cells: I WANT.

If that sounds intense and dramatic, well, just watch. We’re applying a scalpel to all manner of situations and concepts, most especially our wish list. We’re streamlining priorities even more and getting serious to a new extreme.

Simplifying and focusing is an imperative, which is why so many pack rats have been feeling the uncharacteristic drive to throw things out like mad. If something’s broken, forget repairs; toss it out. Relationships are going off life support. What holds appeal now is spartan, simple and likely to appreciate.

Well, not entirely. There’s the not-so-little matter of that screaming I WANT. If we really, truly, deeply, madly want something, we are going for it, no holds barred, and anything else will simply drop. Consequences be damned, too — many an apple will be so tempting that we chomp down on it, and will be worth the repercussions as well.

The theme of desires and satiation continues with the Taurus Full Moon that ends the week, on Sunday. Unlike the last two lunations, it’s not an eclipse (as thousands cheer), which we won’t see again till next spring (ditto). It’s casting a light on earthly appetites and experience. How satisfying is yours? A full discussion is in my mooncast, which will be posted by Saturday.

Forecast for Nov. 4-10, 2013

We’re passing through a doorway in personal and collective evolution. You may already be far enough through it to be blasting off, diving deep, or zooming through a wormhole. Or you may be in the dark, sensing vaguely that life is different, maybe not at all sure of where you are at this point. One thing’s for certain, for all of us: We’re well into new territory, flying blind, navigating more by instruments (or sonar) (or trust).

Last weekend’s catalyzing-to-cataclysmic influences are still in effect. Sunday’s life-altering Scorpio solar eclipse is only beginning to play out, refocusing our priorities, direction and intimate relationships. (Get the full scoop about it in my mooncast.) Endings are still in store; it will help to see them as clearing room for the more choice developments that are blossoming.

The pressure is on (though not as fiercely as last week!) to move into a new way of living, courtesy of cosmic change agents Uranus and Pluto holding their ground in the degrees of their clash last Friday.  The foundations of our lives have cracked open, but this stage of the process, which stretches from 2012 to 2015,  is less about disruption and more about healing. (Read more in last week’s forecast.)

Shine light into the fissures and onto wounds and grievances, no matter how ancient; exposure will lessen their pain and power. (My high school class’ Facebook group turned into a communal therapy room last week, with people voicing decades-old grievances and others voicing solidarity, or explaining what had been going on in their homes, or arguing that we were children then and are, largely, compassionate adults now.) Give yourself credit for how you’ve far you’ve come. Consider the toll it takes on you to continue feeding the complaints you’re still dragging around. Since you’re rebuilding your life platform anyway, why not carry some of them out with the construction debris?

Cost is increasingly a topic of interest, with Venus moving into no-nonsense Capricorn on Tuesday. Here the goddess of love and creativity loses interest in romantic gestures, bouquets and sweet nothings. She casts a calculating eye on all advances, offers and investments and looks instead for lasting value. What does “it” cost? Is it worth what you get in exchange? Do you really want “it,” anyway? Watch this attitude show up in your relationships, agreements, finances and even gift purchases. We won’t be interested in liaisons unless they fit our values and promise stability and permanence. We’ll also be honing and focusing our desires, and likely cutting out what no longer fits, as Venus glides toward her meeting with Pluto at the end of next week.

This pragmatic approach is with us for far longer than this week and next. It’s here until almost the spring. Venus’ stay in Capricorn is uncommonly long, into the beginning of March, due to her scheduled retrograde from December 20 through the end of January.  (Start checking off your gift list now, by the way; last-minute shopping, after she turns retrograde, is likely to bring disappointment.)

In the midst of the ongoing eruptions, and shifts, and launches, life takes on a slower, calmer, even stuck quality as we get into the weekend. Mercury, the ruler of communication and transportation, is stationing to end his retrograde on Sunday. From Saturday, when he hits the degree of his turnaround, until Wednesday, when he clears it, we may feel suspended in time. The floating can provide the opportunity to get a thorough, probing look at a situation. Instead of succumbing to frustration this week, resolve to seek out the benefits of delays and mishaps. Treasure is lurking in those Scorpio waters. What more can you uncover?

Astro-Outlook for November 2013

November is a month of quickened transformation. By the end, we’ll be flowing and working with the new regime.

The first 10 days turn ancient rumblings into new realities. Social and personal constructs are reshaping from the double punch of another Uranus/Pluto square  and the Scorpio solar eclipse catapulting us into refocused values, assets and resources. Attitudes, relationships and situations are falling away, while we’re healing and moving past ancient woes and wounds.

The immediate aftermath is soothing, healing and stabilizing, brining comfort with yourself and messages of love and guidance. Venus’ entry into Capricorn, on the 5th, directs attention to the bottom line and primes us to look for lasting value. Communication and understanding accelerate when Mercury ends his retrograde on the 10th.

Reactions to the first weekend’s tectonic plate shifting hit by mid-month, when Venus makes harsh contacts to the two cosmic change agents and forces relationship to morph dramatically. Arrangements must feed our hearts. Desires are demanding fulfillment, and walls that get in the way will be kicked down — or blown up.

Delayed gratification won’t be appealing (though Saturn cautions: love wisely — decisions have staying power). We’ll be looking at how much more we want, and who is or isn’t delivering, around the Taurus Full Moon on the 17th.

The atmosphere lightens a bit (finally!) when the Sun moves into fun-loving, far-roaming Sagittarius on the 21st and signals the start of the holiday season. The recurring dilemma of what is real and what is illusion comes back around on the guitar in time for Thanksgiving. The truth IS out there; just ask.

You can work serious issues out in our mind and in conversations, which have a grounded, let’s-get-real quality.  That’s not inconsistent with relationships (and romance) flourishing. By month’s end, doors fly open that are custom-made for you. You might not even have to kick. Or knock.
