2014 Aquarius New Moon

January 30, 2014
1:39 PM PST / 4:39 PM EST / 9:39 PM GMT
10 Aquarius 55

This year’s Aquarius New Moon has the subtlety of a corral gate opening and horses running into an unconfined field.

You’re not likely to hesitate when a barrier moves out of the way, or a key dangles before you, or  incentive erupts to leap out of the safety of the known and into a personal adventure.

The weather may still be under the heavy hand of winter, but the doldrums are in for a good shaking off. This Moon is full of surprises, breakthroughs, brilliant ideas and blasts of excitement. They come out of the blue and turn your experience of reality on a dime (in hair-pin turns, at that).

The volatility has staying power, too. The urgings you follow now will percolate for the next 12 months, and heat up again (and how!) in the fall.  This New Moon is Chinese New Year, marking the start of the year of the horse. (See first paragraph above.)  While the last two Chinese years immersed us in deep, dark, often unpleasant waters, this one sets a different tone from the start. The traits of horse are a guiding metaphor for the energy of the year, portending powerful, at times unbridled, movement.

The rearing and raring qualities will flare up again in October, when a round robin of energy known as a grand trine roars through the fire signs. This week’s event, like that energy in the fall,  stoke your desire and ability to put your own individual stamp on the ongoing change and restructuring that has been running rampant in your inner and outer worlds.

This Moon has the cooperation of the ruler of Aquarius, Uranus, the cosmic wild card, rebel, and awakener, and the agent of volatile, unforeseeable change. He is locked in a several year battle with Pluto, lord of death and rebirth and the agent of unavoidable change. Pluto has been receiving the brunt of the attention and energy since Christmas, with deep level restructuring being forced to the surface and into awareness. The balance of focus and power is shifting now, quickly and radically.

Uranus’ helpful link to the Aquarius New Moon inspires and excites actively participating in the ongoing restructuring — standing up, fighting back, stepping out of the norm and taking risks that scream, “What do I have to lose?” These actions and reactions have a pronounced hair-trigger quality, which means the direction you are looking will affect and largely determine the direction you leap.

Fortunately, the past six weeks have delivered encouragement and opportunity galore to choose that direction consciously and wisely. Pluto’s lead role in the major activity since Christmas (the cardinal t-square and Capricorn New Moon) has cut a lot out and given a sharper, narrow focus on what is most important.  Re-evaluating the worth and long-term viability of relationships and more has also been ongoing, too, because of the retrograde of Venus, the ruler of all we hold dear (love, money, beauty, creativity, values).

The final hours of that retrograde are imprinted on this New Moon. Venus stations direct the next day. What you have revisited, revalued, and learned during her retrograde is part of the platform from which you will spring to action.  You put away some toys, desires, trifles, goals and connections, while remembering or discovering the value of others.  This process prepared you for (and bodes well) for catapulting into life-enhancing directions now, rather than landing on dead-end streets.

If you’re still caught up in letting go, Uranian bolts will likely break you from it. More information may help as well. The New Moon is tingling with the possibilities of that. It takes place just before Mercury, ruler of our minds and information flow, leaves the objectivity of Aquarius for the empathic, we-are-one waters of Pisces.  He’ll back back in Aquarius shortly, however, after he goes retrograde next week.

The long process of looking backwards is winding down. Your gaze is shifting to the future, and so are your footsteps. Next month’s Mercury retrograde will bring certain topics back up for further research. The underlying question will not be “Where have I been?”, however, but “Where am I going?” And sometimes, after the fact, “Where have I leapt?”

Forecast for January 27 – Feb. 2, 2014

My 2014 astro-overview is available on mp3s. Get yours here!

The outlook for this week:  long stretches of quiet, winding down, and cosmically enforced time outs, with surges of energy and new perspectives coupled with gear shifts as the weekend approaches.

The stretches come from the void of course moons occurring every other day, starting late Monday afternoon. These are times when the Moon is traveling through the end of a sign with all her major aspects behind her. The atmosphere is often diffused or floating, and circumstances often encourage contemplating and waiting. (People are out when you call; email and texts go unanswered for hours.) If significant activity does manage to take place, it often amounts to nothing, or unravels, or requires redoing later.

Voids happen every week. What makes this week’s worth mentioning is both their regularity and their size. After Monday’s shortie, the rest of the week’s voids are 12-hour marathons that consume most of our waking hours on Wednesday, Friday and Sunday.

Expect — and take advantage of — these lengthy opportunities to coast, sit back, contemplate, relax, go within, and/or simply be.  Go with the flow. Ponder recent events, what’s in your heart, the path ahead. No pushing; no shoving. If you’re still, you’ll feel when to put your foot on the gas and when to take it off.

The big action consists of a cluster of events on Thursday and Friday, which rev us up and send us forward and back.  The first is the Aquarius New Moon, which is also the Chinese New Year and start of the Year of the Horse.

This New Moon promises to shake off the doldrums of winter. It’s making a handy link to its ruler, Uranus, the awakener, rabble rouser and lock picker of the skies. Watch for new perspectives, greater objectivity and an inner clock chiming that it’s time to live your own unique life. More is in my mooncast, which will be posted by Thursday.

The Moon coincides with the final, for now, escalation of tension in the ongoing restructuring of the foundations of our lives. Jupiter, which magnifies every influence it touches, is completing an opposition to Pluto, lord of death and rebirth and overseer of our longterm metaphoric remodeling projects. The magnitude, depth and inescapability of the changes in our lives becomes impossible to miss. Watch for issues to resurface from the week between Christmas and New Year’s. Family milestones are likely (such as adult children taking over from aging parents). So is another wave of departures by celebrities with whom we are culturally identified.

The Moon also holds the energy of two gear shifts that start on Friday. The first signals the end of a six-week process. Since just before Christmas, we’ve been re-evaluating the worth, desirability and long-term viability of relationships, money matters, possessions that we rely on, and our value system. (Show of hands: how many of you have stumbled on old flames and crushes recently, even in your dreams?) That process is winding down as Venus ends the retrograde motion she has been in since just before Christmas.

No sudden shift is coming; she won’t move off the degree of her direct station until next week. Besides, another planet’s activity may create the feeling that her retrograde hasn’t ended. As Venus is stationing, Mercury, the ruler of how and what we think and speak and how we get around, moves into Pisces. Communication loses its contours in this most universally connected of the water signs, and logic and rational thought give way to empathy and knowing. What’s more, Mercury is approaching his own retrograde, which begins on Thursday, Feb. 6. (Read more in my article How to Handle Mercury Retrograde.)

No squawking! These two retrogrades, in such quick succession, do have a beneficial purpose. The focus of the Venus retrograde has been reevaluating priorities. Next month is suited to researching, reorganizing, and thinking things through carefully — or rather, sitting carefully with the emotional sensations and information.

For now, notice the shift, from awareness of the bottom line in every calculation to a greater sense of interconnectedness. It’s subtle, but you can detect it. Use Mercury’s dip into Pisces — he’ll back into Aquarius during his coming retrograde — to absorb information, while the energies of the Aquarian New Moon help you gain perspective. It’s another way of bridging the rational and nonrational, which is the thrust of existence these days.

How To Handle Mercury Retrograde

If you’ve heard the term “Mercury retrograde,” odds are you don’t have good feelings about it. Take heart! Even if some people react to it as if the sky is falling, Mercury retrograde is not the end of the world. It’s a regular phenomenon that happens three or four times every year.

It’s time for our minds to play catch-up. Mercury, the messenger of the gods, is taking over while emotions ebb from last week’s Cancer Full Moon. He’s hosting a week packed with thoughts, information and messages, leading to both action and confrontation.

The first round of fodder for thought involves matters dear to the heart (or wallet). As he and their ruler Venus move into a growth aspect to Venus early Tuesday, watch for indications of improvement — or, at least, a new regime — in relationships, in finances, in feelings of self-worth, and in general in your value system. This tete a tete is issuing an interim status report on the reevaluation of all those matters the Venus retrograde is encouraging.

Further evidence of stabilizing (or containment) comes by Thursday, when Venus meets Saturn, lord of structure and commitment, on the ecliptic early in the morning. Friday demonstrates the benefits as Mercury dances with Venus on the ecliptic, then passes the baton to her consort and champion Mars.

A unified theory of life is firming up in you and propelling you forward. Mind, heart and will are team players (at the moment, anyway): You know your heart, what’s most important to you and what you want, and all that is translating directly into your agenda, drive and actions. Everybody’s walking their talk as the weekend approaches. It won’t be hard to see who’s in your language family.

Even so, life is not all sunshine, lollipops and rainbows. There are still bills to pay, commitments and responsibilities to carry out, and walls to test. Consciously or not, your mind faces all of these before sunrise Saturday and works out what to do about them. The aftermath is an epidemic of decisions, demands, conversations that can not be avoided or delayed, and a backwash of anxiousness that maybe you said too much. You won’t and you didn’t. You had to say what you said. The same goes for the source of every not entirely comforting message you receive. It’s all stoking personal growth, healthy expression of power and, ultimately, supportive and reliable connections.

So open those minds this week! They’re not merely trapping information, but also turning it into fuel. Remember:  your mindset affects how you experience life. You stand to improve both this week.

2014 Cancer Full Moon

January 15-16, 2014
8:52 PM PDT / 11:52 PM EDT  4:52 AM GMT
25 Cancer 58 / 25 Capricorn 58

Get out your hanky, your fuzzy robe and slippers, and a big helping or three of your favorite comfort food.  A security blanket could come in handy this week, as the Cancer Full Moon brings emotional release that’s been building since Christmas.

It is the cosmic clean-up act to foundation overhaul that’s been screaming for attention since the end of last year.  Mars, the planet of push, has been roughing up the agents of unpredictable and unavoidable change, Uranus and Pluto, and then escalating the action with bigger-is-better Jupiter. Think of the life-redefining developments that have happened in, to and around you since the end of last year. (Could it only have been three weeks ago?)  Even if you’ve come through without tears or trauma, you haven’t escaped unaffected.

Now come the aftershocks, backwash and delayed reactions; now comes a flood of emotional information.  Inner children who have been brave little soldiers are allowing their lower lip to do more than tremble. Let them. (Refer back to the first paragraph.) There’s no point in arguing with anything that bubbles up, whether that’s out of you or someone else.

Besides, the bubbling up is productive. It’s letting you know how you and the people around you feel. It’s venting pressure, fears, disappointment, sorrow, relief, joy, and other emotions that you can’t put a name to but have been churning all the same.  Allow it all to come out without judgment or ridicule, especially your own. It doesn’t have to make sense, but if you heed it, some of it will.  It’s telling you where you feel safe, nurtured or protected, and where you do not, where it feels good to rest your head, place your feet or build your future, and where it does not.

That information is going to affect your choices, behavior and goals from now on. Don’t be surprised if the effect is immediate. This Full Moon carries a demand to go after what we want. It is imprinted with a catalytic connection between Venus and Mars, rulers of our desires and our will. Although Mars is the god of war, he’s taking orders from Venus right now (and for the first seven months of the year), because he is in Libra, one of the signs she rules. He has no choice but to implement her wishes, which these days run to the practical and lasting value.

If a situation doesn’t feel safe, nurturing, protecting, or building toward a solid, lasting form, watch for confrontation, renegotiation, ultimatums, breakups or walking away. On the other hand, this link-up promises action on matters that do fit that bill: reaching out, asking for what you want, making a play for someone, asking for a raise or change of circumstances and the like. Whether desires are fulfilled is a different matter. What’s important, for this week, is the move.

Don’t analyze or chew or waste energy on predicting specifics. They will be organic and spring from a nonrational source.  You may be the instigator of action, or you may be on the receiving end. You may also experience multiple instances of this dynamic. And it’s possible that little of this will be premeditated. Much will simply unfold.

The quote that introduced last summer’s Cancer New Moon forecast applies again, with one tweak:

“It’s like a wave. Resist and you’ll be knocked over. Dive into it and you’ll swim out the other side. This is a new and different world. The challenge is to cope with it and not just cope — but thrive.”                     — Mrs. Greenslade, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel

Instead of diving in this time, we’re all feeling a wave, at our backs, propelling us forward and carrying us along.

Forecast for Jan. 13-19, 2013

How are you feeling? Specifically, how are you feeling about what’s happened so far this year? If you don’t know now, you will shortly.

The waves of emotion cresting this week answer that question but good and spawn a torrent of activity in response. While the waters are still high, bursts of lightning clear and open our thinking and lead the way to a bird’s eye, big-picture perspective.

It’s all an outgrowth of the eruptions and paradigm shifts that have been rocking and rolling since Christmas. The metaphoric ground beneath our feet has cracked open, and so have a breathtaking number of relationships. The comings, goings, amputations, unmaskings and realizations of the past few weeks are hitting a point of culmination with  Wednesday’s Cancer Full Moon.

Emotions run high under any Full Moon, and especially so when the Moon is in her home base of Cancer. They could go off the charts now, given the uprooting and chapter-ending nature of so many recent events. High emotionality does not necessarily mean floods of tears, though. Even if tears do flow, they do not necessarily mean sorrow; they could express joy, relief, recognition or release.

Regardless of the form, displays are surfacing that tell you, unmistakably, how you and the people around you feel. Issues of safety, security and stability swirl through the outpourings. (Read more in my mooncast.)

The likely response is not wallowing, however, but demands and campaigns for what you want — not planned, not strategized, not discussed for hours beforehand with confidantes, but flowing organically out of you and the wellspring of emotions coursing through you. The trigger is Thursday’s clash between Venus and Mars, rulers of the feminine and the masculine, what we desire and how we go after it.

Venus retrograde in security-oriented Capricorn has been raising questions of long-term, real-world worth and ramifications in relationships, finances and values. Mars in Libra (under Venus’ command, by the way) has been directing effort into relationships and agreements, and is also the guy who set off all the upheaval since Christmas. When they bump into each other, nobody says, “I’m sorry” and moves on. “I want!” is more like it, followed up with bold action. The timid guy at the bar downs a shot of tequila and finally approaches the woman he’s been eyeing. The unhappy employee leaves a dead-end situation. You get the picture: Instead of crying over milk that spilled lately, we’re lunging toward the future.

And you’re doing that more boldly than you might think as the week begins. Clarity and courage are yours as Mercury, the planet of communication, gets an offer early Friday morning from Uranus, awakener and agent of the unforeseeable. A brilliant approach can catch fire and help shake off any lingering sogginess from the week’s emotional expression.

That recedes further into the distance starting Sunday, when the Sun enters Aquarius. Wring out your hanky and adopt a philosophical attitude. Everything that’s happened is for the best, in the long run. Odds are that’s exactly how you’ll see it.

Forecast for January 6-12, 2014

After a tumultuous kick-off to the year, we’re already settling in. This week we get our heads and hearts together, increase the reach of our grasp and come upon safety nets within ourselves and our connections. Developments have the potential for stabilizing and grounding, which provide a sturdy base for moving out of emotional reactions and into more objective perceptions.

Make a note of this week’s impulses, campaigns and agendas. They will return in May and June, when warrior god Mars marches back over his current position. They are currently flying off the collision between Mars and bigger-is-better Jupiter, a contact that is prolonging and escalating the profound changes that emerged between Christmas and New Year’s. Those eruptions and shatterings of patterns, envelopes and paradigms are taking on a turbo-charged quality now.

With that activity as the backdrop, the travels of our minds and hearts color the week. Mercury, ruler of how and what we communicate and how we get around, launches the journey and the week with an overnight assist by commitment and responsibility-oriented Saturn.

On Tuesday he shares what he’s learned with Venus, goddess of love and ruler of all we hold dear (money, possessions, beauty, creativity, value systems). Their meeting rivets mind and heart on longterm desires and sets us thinking about the pathway to making them manifest. Some of that thinking involves other people. Watch for “where are we going?” conversations and decisions that define, tie down and recognize the value of certain connections.

After Mars’ clash with Jupiter begins to recede (it peaks on Wednesday), building materials start arriving for ideas and decisions from the beginning of the week. The job foreman is Saturn, who is delivering important, practical options on, appropriately, his day, Saturday.  He’s making offers of assistance to both Venus and the Sun, opening doors of great personal meaning. Between those meetings, the Sun and Venus have their own private time, sealing our commitment to our heart’s desires and values, and anchoring connections with personal value for the long haul. Relationships stand to benefit tangibly, and so do you, especially if you treat yourself with maturity, responsibility and respect.

While so much moves into solid form and stability, our minds step back and observe. On Saturday, Mercury departs the ground of Capricorn for the intellectual expanse of Aquarius, where he will remain for the rest of the month. He’ll be taking a bird’s eye view of the path unfolding before you. Take advantage of his viewpoint. Seeing the big picture makes it easier to assess whether an impediment is a momentary annoyance or a boulder to circumvent or destroy. An elevated view can also remind you that you are making progress, however slow or undetectable. Slow and steady is your mantra. You are in a marathon.
