Forecast for the 2016 Gemini Full Moon

2016 Gemini Full Moon
December 13-14, 2016
4:05 PM PST / 7:05 PM EST / 12:05 AM GMT
22 Gemini 25 / 22 Sagittarius 25

Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never harm me. Or do they? The question is up for consideration under the Gemini Full Moon. It’s highlighting the emotional power and impact of words, from the ones you tell yourself to everything that floats by, to and through you.

Where is your mind going? What’s pouring in and out of it? How’s your information flow these days? More to the point: how is it making you feel? Happy? Safe? Disoriented? Confused? Angry? Resolute?

Staying calm and centered — and even just knowing which thoughts are yours and which belong to someone else — have been more than the usual challenge lately. One reason is the epidemic of seemingly inescapable, emotionally laden messages in private and public conversation. Another is the pervasive sense that we have become unmoored from what previously passed as reality. Both trends are escalating to a point of departure now.

The weeks since the Sagittarius New Moon have brought abundant opportunity to commit to your personal code of ethics by putting it into action. They’ve also encouraged people to make statements that show who they really are. Have you been listening? Some of these statements are still hovering around you and have a role to play in your Full Moon process. Tune in to them.

“There’s glory for you!”
“I don’t know what you mean by glory,” Alice said.
Humpty Dumpty smiled contemptuously. “Of course you don’t — till I tell you! I meant, ‘There’s a nice knock-down argument for you!’”
“But ‘glory’ doesn’t mean ‘a nice knock-down argument,’” Alice objected.
“When I use a word,” Humpty Dumpty said, in rather scornful tone, “It means just what I choose it to mean — neither more nor less!”
“Through The Looking Glass” by Lewis Carroll

Social media has been abuzz with fake news and admonitions about sites to avoid, calling out lies and spreading tantrums and Tweetstorms. What’s been your personal parallel?  Think about how these phenomena have been showing up in your life. Has someone lied to you? Have you been lying to yourself? Basing opinions on faulty data?

Words that never were true, spoken to help nobody but you, words with lies inside  — “Words,” by Tommy Boyce & Bobby Hart, recorded by The Monkees

This Moon Full supports reviewing the quality and reliability of your information flow — and reshaping it to your benefit. That does not necessarily mean eliminating viewpoints that differ from yours. It’s hardly helpful to live an echo chamber that amplifies one perspective and blocks the possibility of learning and growth.

It may be time, however, to separate yourself from viewpoints and messages that violate your code of ethics, make you feel bad, or harm you. And to rethink your information sources. And maybe to spend less time online. Or more in direct contact. Face to face, even.

You can do this. Easily. The rulers of this Full Moon party are both pushing this along, in their own distinctive ways.

Cosmic messenger Mercury is the ruler of the Gemini Moon, and he’s closing in on Pluto, lord of death and regeneration, who strips everything he touches down to its essence. That’s a recipe for deep-level, permanent change., which we’ll get to revisit and take even deeper when Mercury begins his final retrograde of the year on December 19.

Less dramatically, the ruler of the Sagittarius Sun, boundless Jupiter, is making harmonious links to both the Sun and the Moon, which open both mind and heart to optimism and positive expansion.

The same result is coming from action hero Mars, in progressive, detached, future-oriented Aquarius. He is working with Jupiter and the Moon in the freely flowing energy of a grand trine. which connects thoughts, emotions and actions in a continuous loop. The warrior god’s Spock-like perspective (and willingness to fight for the greater good) is blending with the Gemini Moon’s lively, multi-faceted intellectual bent (and emotional reactions to our data flow) and Jupiter’s optimism, expansiveness and current interest in relationships and agreements.

An example of this trio’s potential is the veterans’ arrival at Standing Rock on December 4, which combined warriors, social action, and communicating information and emotions via channels outside mainstream media. Like that convergence, the Moon/Jupiter/Mars trine is pouring alternate and more beneficial possibilities into our thoughts, emotions, actions and social compacts.

Pressure is bearing down to reset boundaries, too. It may not be as comfortable as Jupiter’s input, but it’s both helpful and curative. It’s coming off the dynamic configuration of the t-square the Sun and the Moon are making to Chiron in Pisces, and offering an escape route into intactness.

With the wounded healer in the waters of interconnectedness, we have been, in some ways, drowning in emotional wounds — ours, our friends’ and family’s, those of the downtrodden or underdogs, strangers’ plights that flash across our screens, down to deep and core traumas in our collective psyche.

This Full Moon has the power to propel us out of the morass. And the way out may be as simple as changing your thinking. And that may be as simple as becoming aware of what is yours and what is someone else’s.

That impulse is right in line with the individuating fervor building within each of us. The Full Moon is a direct lead-in to the month’s biggest astro-attraction, the booster rocket blast detonating on December 24. Order-loving Saturn is teaming with cosmic instigator Uranus, with Jupiter dosing both ends with high-octane fuel accelerant.

Maximum life force is building within each of us. With wild card Uranus in the mix, it’s impossible to predict with any certainty the how and what that’s coming. Still, this Full Moon may provide some road markers.

It’s stoking the future-oriented genius of Uranus, which is inspiring courageous leaps onto our own distinctive paths. The Sun is standing with Saturn, bringing stability and an energetic grounding cord to the Full Moon and the blast that is coming.

So clean your radar. Clear out the static. Dump other people’s baggage out of your flight kit. Fine tune your signal. And buckle up for blast off.

Get tips for harnessing the Full Moon in my one-session class Working With the Moon.

Forecast for the 2016 Pisces Full Moon

2016 Pisces Full Moon Lunar Eclipse
September 16, 2016
12:05 PM PDT / 3:05 PM EDT / 7:05 PM GMT
24 Virgo 19 / 24 Pisces 19

Hear that roar? It’s the tidal wave coming off the Pisces Full Moon.

An umbrella won’t do you any good. A surfboard might not, either; these breakers have indomitable force. Running away is pointless, too.

This Full Moon is a lunar eclipse, escalating everything unfolds under it into larger-than-life proportions. What’s cresting is beyond mortal power. It will find you, no matter where you go.

Better to let the waters wash over (and out of) you. Better still to dive right in. The ride will be exhilarating, purgative, curative and, ultimately, a relief. And you’ll end up on dry land. Eventually.

You’ve been feeling the build-up to this, whether you recognized the signs for what they were. The month has been edgy, unsettling to the point of physical discomfort and motivating, inviting look after look at situations big and small that scream for improvement.

A lot of them, if you’re honest with yourself, have been hovering for some time. The skies have targeted them in a massive clean-up and resetting campaign, and we’ve reached the most intense, inescapable phase.

We’re in the next to last round of a cycle of eclipses on the Virgo/Pisces axis, which started in March 2015 and winds up next spring.  They’ve had us ping-ponging between extremes of utterly earthbound, rational existence and utterly unhinging from the earthly.

That cycle kicked off with a Pisces New Moon at the last degree of the zodiac, so emotionally powerful that it sent people with a heavy chart emphasis in water to their beds.  The current Full Moon is in the neighborhood, just a few degrees away. Instead of knocking us on our backs, though, this month’s is propelling us to action — and communication.

This lunar eclipse is in complex astrological company, which is transitioning us from a dying way of being in the world to the way that will be the new normal. This Full Moon is an ideal follow-up to the Virgo triple-whammy that launched that process: the solar eclipse on the 1st, with Mercury retrograding in late Virgo and Jupiter ending a year-long trip through the sign.

After the clean-up and reorganizational spree that line-up unleashed, what better final touch than power washing our lives with an emotional blast or two?  It’s like spraying suds and debris off a deck after scrubbing it down. Only a little messier. The power wash is showing situations in a way we haven’t quite perceived until now.

This Full Moon is teeming with revelations, exponentially more so than most lunar eclipses (which are generally off the charts in this department). Thank a shift in the machinations of the cosmic fog machine. It’s been on overdrive since late last year, the byproduct of a protracted clash between Saturn, lord of form, and Neptune, lord of all that defies form (and ruler of the Pisces Moon).

Their conflict is behind the vagueness, weirdness and confounding, credulity-defying statements and behaviors that have enveloped us since late last year. The two planets squared off for the last time on the 10th and are slowing backing away from battle.

As the fog evaporates, backstories are emerging; masks are dropping; lies and conceits are being revealed; explanations for all manner of mysteries are tumbling forth.

And as we see more and more what has been going on in front of us, or behind our backs, or in the fog, the lid is flying off emotions. Ignored, buried or denied ones are pouring out with an especially uncontrollable, physically uncomfortable power.

The combo — reality-tilting revelations plus tsunami-force emotions — is motivating us to Do Something.

So is Mars, god of war and ruler of the masculine and our drive and energy. The Sun and the Moon are squeezing him in a dynamic configuration called a t-square. The pressure demands action, so not only ia the lunar eclipse coaxing out emotions and revelations like crazy, but we are acting and reacting. Maybe like crazy, maybe not.

Since Mars is in Sagittarius, the resulting action is spontaneous and high-energy. It may have an element of putting beliefs in motion, perhaps forcefully or with a touch of anger. It may also have a premeditated streak, even with notes of maturity and commitment, reflecting the marching orders that Mars received from order-loving Saturn at the end of August.

Then again, it might be daring to the point of recklessness. Mars is in a direct easy flow to Uranus, agent of radical change, in leap-first, look-later Aries. Fired up by this pair, emotional expression promises to be bold, abrupt and risky, revealing personal truth and letting chips fall where they may.

Whatever we feel, whatever we realize, whatever we express, we are not keeping it to ourselves. The pressure has Mars shooting arrows across the zodiac into Gemini, aka Cosmic Communication Central. We’re broadcasting the effects of this eclipse far and wide, face to face and across social media. (Invoke that Saturnian caution and remind yourself: anything you post online becomes part of your permanent record.)

The playing out is loud, messy, at times overwhelming and ultimately cathartic. Chapters are ending. Doors are slamming and bolting behind us. Many situations will never be the same, and neither will we.

Good thing, too. The waters pouring forth have profound therapeutic properties, with wounded healer Chiron traveling close by the Moon. His presence acts as a cosmic solvent, washing away the illusion of isolation as well as tendencies to soak up, carry and drown in other people’s pains, burdens and sorrows.

The mind can’t stop it. It can’t even overanalyze effectively, at this point. Chiron is opposing Mercury, ruler of the mind and the Virgo Sun. The positioning is putting the whammy on Mercury, overpowering the mind and permeating thoughts, words and messages with compassion, forgiveness and healing on all levels.

Fight it, block it, or dive into it. We will ultimately feel tremendously better, as the eclipse’s effects unroll over the next six months. First signs of relief may well show up as September ends and fades into October.

So take a deep breath. You can’t hold back, much less stop, whatever’s coming. Face it. The skies are providing plenty of courage and fuel; dive straight in. The ride will be wild; it’s true. But the process will be gentler in the long run.

Forecast for September 2016

Join me for the largest astrology telesummit in history Sept. 19 -28!

September is the pivot point for the year.  Much that’s been in the works for months, even years, is finally moving ahead. Or moving on. Stasis, stalling and wondering are on the way out.  Clarity, movement and solid (if simplified) structure are coming in.

There’s no guarantee of a smooth, orderly or easy transition, though. The changeout is arriving in a whirlwind of revelations, unmaskings, departures, arrivals and shifts so dramatic they could wind.

Flexibility is the watch word for the month. Maintaing the approach of a reed will keep you standing as developments cycle through at varying speeds and predictability. And whatever you think you know going into the month, you are likely to have a drastically different viewpoint as autumn begins.

Inevitability is in the air from the moment the month begins. A pair of eclipses is responsible for the non-stop atmosphere of milestone, high-stake, permanent change.

The first eclipse is a solar, on September 1, and it’s a Virgo-with-a-vengeance New Moon. It comes with a pile-up in that sign, each component amplifying the mandate to analyze, clean, improve and sober up.

The North Node of destiny is sidling up to the New Moon and signaling, “This way to the future.” Mercury, planet of communication and transportation, and bigger-is-better Jupiter are in cahoots, handing out brooms and to-do lists for wrapping up Jupiter’s one-year tour through Virgo. Over the next three weeks, Mercury is also treating us to dropped or obscured but phenomenally practical details as he retrogrades from the end to the middle of Virgo, through — no coincidence here — the equinox, September 22.

Learn why this retrograde is unusually significant and what it means for each sign.

This combo promises to explain a lot and sweep much clean, eventually. Early in the month, though, situations that have confounded us all year may well escalate into even greater mysteries and confusion.

The perps are Saturn, ruler of form, and his sparring buddy of late, Neptune, ruler of everything that defies form. Once they make their final of three clashes, on the 10th, the fog, vagueness and reason to question many a person’s sanity will begin to die back, clear up and ultimately make sense. (It may help you connect the dots to look back to their first two clashes, last December and June.)

That pair makes its last contact just after Jupiter begins a year stay in Libra, which happens on the 9th. Libra is the second home of love and money goddess Venus, and she is at home when he arrives. Their combined presence encourages social niceties, enjoying pleasing meals and conversation, and awareness of both ends of each relationship. (Acting on the awareness is another matter. When in doubt, “Say it with flowers” is a generally safe bet.)

While we’re talking through smiles, veils are stripping away, masks are falling off and epiphanies are exploding in our consciousness. They come from the month’s second eclipse, which is a lunar, the Pisces Full Moon on the 16th, and which unleashes a floodgate of revelations and emotions with fiery, catalytic, motivating force.

Movement is inevitable, especially where it feels overdue. The Sun and the Moon are bearing down on warrior god Mars, in the dynamic, action-oriented configuration of a t-square. Adding to the volatility is the easy assist Mars is getting from Uranus, cosmic agent of radical, unforeseeable change. Risks will be taken. Shifts will occur.

At the equinox, hard truths, profound candor and deeply intimate conversations ensue, some of which reshape or end situations. Gear shift after gear shift follows, as a line of astrological dominoes falls in the month’s last 10 days.

Mercury stations direct and the Sun enters Libra on the 22nd. Relating and financial dealings intensify, turn high stake and grow magnetic-to-possessive when Venus enters Scorpio on the 23rd. Pluto, ruler of Scorpio (and, like Venus, of desire and money, but of far greater magnitude), ends six months of foundation work when he stations direct on the 26th.

Motivation kicks in to put noses to grindstones and labor diligently toward long-term goals when Mars, ruler of the masculine and our drive (and traditional ruler of Scorpio) enters Capricorn on the 27th. Those goals and his efforts reflect the marching orders he got from Saturn on August 24th. It’s time to implement and make things happen.

Relationships come into focus as the month ends, with the New Moon in Libra on the 30. Issues of give-and-take, integrity and beliefs permeate thoughts and conversations. Action results. Structure-altering action. Stasis be gone. We’re starting to get somewhere.

Forecast for August 2016: Shifting Sands

August is the bridge between the weird, unsteerable stasis and discomfort of the past two months and the paradox of stabilizing and reboot coming this fall. It’s a wobbly bridge, to be sure,  swaying and shifting like a trick floor in a funhouse. Still, the movement is ultimately productive, instead of just getting in the way, or annoying.

Hearts and minds are assimilating, adjusting and adapting, working over so much that’s surfaced and striving to process the developments into something that makes sense. The exercise largely succeeds. Just as a sensation of balance descends, though, our attention flies back over territory we thought we’d covered.

No worries. The exercise, like the rest of the month, is valuable prep for what lies ahead.

The first half of the month delivers the oomph to send us on our way. The journey begins with Mars, ruler of our drive and actions, entering boisterous Sagittarius and energizing the Leo New Moon on the 2nd.

He’s been trawling the murky depths of Scorpio since spring, dredging up weighty, uncomfortable and unpleasant business that’s refused to go back in the closet. His entry into Sagittarius has us making like colts breaking out of a corral in search of movement, maneuverability, adventure and free-range contact with the outdoors.

Bemoaning and tending to wounds and nasty situations are out. Putting philosophies into action (or fighting for/over them), cracking jokes and generally having a good time are in. Moods improve;  motivation returns; optimism mounts.

Marching orders come from the heart as well.  It zips through three distinct styles of desires and relating. For the first four days, they’re maximum Leo, vibrant, extravagant and attention-seeking. Sober sensibility takes over from the 5th through the 29th, when Venus cools down in pragmatic, improvement-oriented, boundary-focused Virgo.

The appeal of thinking and talking things over has a shelf-life, though, and then movement and follow through are in order. It’s through this clear-headed lens that she demands action from Mars on the 6th. (Minds are screaming, “Move it!” too.) By the 17th, itches will be scratched and appetites  will be pursued, when the goddess of earthly desire and money collaborates with her primal, feral, force-of-nature counterpart Pluto.

Objective assessment hits immediately, with the Aquarius Full Moon Lunar Eclipse on the 18th. A firm reality check follows. Mars has a law and order meeting on the 24th with Saturn, enforcer of rules. The ramifications of recent high-energy actions crystalize. Questions arise (and likely resolve) about responsibility and wisdom. Don’t be surprised if Venus’ orders have sent Mars down the path to structure and commitment. Don’t be surprised, either, if he trots back into the corral and shuts the gate after himself.

The aftermath kicks up cosmic fog and glitter, with equal potential for confusion, illusion and romance, when Mars squares Neptune on the 26th. Who cares about reality, for the moment? Venus joins boundless Jupiter in a super-conjunction (by degree and declination) on the 27th. Hearts are viewing the glass not only as half full, but also fillable, and requesting more, please. Lots.

A meeting of hearts and minds leads to sighs of relief all around, as Venus meets Mercury and goes home to Libra, aka Relationship Central, on the 29th (bringing the heart’s third mode of expression). She’s still glowing from her date two days earlier with Jupiter, who’s heading over in September for his first visit in 12 years. In advance of her house guest (and the emphasis and expansion he promises), social interactions relax into niceties, prettily crafted sentiments, and an awareness of the game of give and take.

On Jupiter’s end, there’s tidying up to be done before he leaves Virgo. Mercury stations retrograde in that sign on the 30th and will not go direct until September 22, after Jupiter has left for Libra. The messenger god’s backtracking provides the opportunity to go over not merely his recent weeks in Virgo, but also the months and developments since last October, when Jupiter began traveling the degrees of this retrograde.

Snafus, breakdowns and garbling that occur now point to areas that have room for improvement and would benefit from attention before Jupiter completes his clean-up tour of Virgo. Look at this time as a chance to pick up dropped threads, learn missed information and address confusion and misunderstandings that have spun off Jupiter’s hard aspects to Neptune and his cosmic fog machine. What comes in September and beyond will be ever so much more solid, if you do.

For pointers, read my guide How to Survive the 2016 Mercury Retrogrades.

Forecast for May 2016

“Relax, don’t do it, when you want to go to it.” — Relax, Frankie Goes to Hollywood

When time slows to a crawl this month or, worse, life renders you motionless and you find yourself wishing for movement, action, anything, please remember the mania of March and April. And count your blessings.

Which is not to say that May won’t be hopping, at times. It will, so much so that you will have moments of gasping for breath and begging for a break. When one comes around (and opportunities will abound May 7 – 13), take it and indulge, shamelessly. Otherwise, stock up on stamina, pacing, being in the now — all are qualities that serve you well in May’s singular energies.

Progress is occurring, just not in a predictable or forward-ho manner. The biggest instances of growth and movement will come from matters returning for revisiting, revising, fleshing out and simply more attention. They dominate the first third of the month, when the uncommonly high number of five planets is retrograde.

Even as that count begins to lessen (with Jupiter stationing direct on May 11), the retrospective, redoing vibe remains. Its benefits are many. Going back over old turf or reviving old matters allows for redoing, repairing, rearranging, improving and catching information, details and nuances that make a difference. Dig in the same spot long enough and you may hit paydirt, or discover buried treasure, or strike oil. Or maybe just remove debris that’s crowding out new growth.

Opportunities to solidify, ground and let nature take its course abound around the Taurus New Moon on May 6. It creates an unimpeded current of practical, tangible, growth-oriented earth energy running from the New Moon to bountiful Jupiter in Virgo and transformative Pluto in Capricorn. The effect lasts the whole moon cycle, and spills over into social and financial matters when Venus takes the Moon’s position May 9 and 10.

The line-up is a cosmic invitation to lounge in the garden of life. Enjoy the physical sustenance and pleasures it offers. Look for signs of growth, flourishing and even harvest, and give yourself over to the sensations. Think of yourself as a spiritual being having a physical existence (you’ve heard that saying, right?), or a bridge between spirit and matter. Put your attention on the here and now, and revel in it.

Life slides focus to here and there by the Sun’s annual move to Gemini on the 20th and the Sagittarius Full Moon the next day, with action hero Mars retreat’s taking him right into the festivities. No happy-go-lucky Sag party, this one;we’ll be defending beliefs, or acting aggressively on them or otherwise living out the phrase “fighting words.”

The backward trend will not noticeably loosen until Mercury goes direct on the 22nd. (Read what this month’s Mercury retrograde bodes here.) Despite communication and travel matters gradually returning to more familiar contours, the vibe of going back over old territory will only intensify from the 27th through next month, when  Mars backs into the murky depths of Scorpio.

Before he changes sign, his partner Venus leaves home for a flit-and-flirt-fest in Gemini and has a staring contest with him on the 24th. This face-off drives home the distance between desires and achieving them. He takes that awareness along on his Scorpio mission, which explores loose ends from last summer, when Saturn retrograded over the same turf. Think of it as a clean-up crew in military gear, with tactical weapons, surgical tools and steely determination to tackle whatever they encounter.

The end of the month brings awareness into focus in other ways as well. Rules and limitations mushroom to the point that we address them, thanks to a harsh contact between Jupiter and Saturn, which crests on May 26. Our thought processes and information flow clarify dramatically by the 30th, when Mercury gets an effortless assist from Pluto. The point of Mercury’s retrograde becomes clear (or some of it, at least). Thinking and priorities streamline. Important information comes to consciousness; significant conversations occur. Perhaps empowering, perhaps delimiting, and definitely transforming and simplifying.
