7 Aries 37

by Kathy Biehl

And we’re off! Call it kundalini, life force, spring fever or waking up. The Aries New Moon, the first moon of spring, is unleashing primal instincts and propelling us into the season.

It’s time to get up and get out. Take initiative; take risks. Gamble and gambol. Leap impulsively, confidently, assertively, brazenly.

Everyone’s got free-agent status right now, emboldening them to act in their own interests, alone, and stand up to — or preemptively attack — obstacles, opposition or competition.

We’re all young rams, bursting with energy, testing our footing, prowess and horns, and answering a natural call: Just do it.

Yet this year’s Aries New Moon is not all charging and leaping and pouncing and adventuring. It also encourages staying put now and again and savoring – much like Star Trek’s Captain Kirk pausing a mission and indulging in a romantic interlude.

So the thrill of the chase isn’t the only imperative. Enjoying the catch is as well. And maybe having a snack.

The textures come from the interplay of Aries’ ruler, Mars, and his cosmic love Venus. Venus rules what we want (generally love, money, beauty, creativity). Mars rules how we go after what we want. Those two impulses, desire and drive, are not merely in synch right now; they are inextricably interwoven.

Venus and Mars are currently enjoying a balance of power and working in unusual harmony. Each is in a sign ruled by the other:  Venus is in Mars’ base, Aries, while Mars is in Venus’ spring  home, Taurus. This relationship, called mutual reception, means that any influence on one of them also resonates with and affects the other. Neither is operating in a vacuum, but as part of a unit.

Our hearts are emboldened, fierce and on the prowl, while the rest of our being wants more than the hunt. It wants to sink into the aftermath, in physical, sensory experience. Mars in Taurus is in no hurry to rush away, either.

It’s a seeming contradiction: The desire for immediate gratification is bound up with a methodology that is slow, steady, step-by-step and fixed on the moment instead of running off after the next big thrill. Watch the tension build. And excitement. And possibly pay-off.

Heightening this bond is Venus’ conjunction with the New Moon. She has been in backtracking mode since March 4, taking us on a journey of investigating and rediscovering relationships, money issues and creative projects from the past and current time.

Her retrograde has taken her over the degree currently occupied by the Sun and the Moon. Each of them has recently stopped by her and picked up input about her retrograde journey, which is now coming with them into their own meeting. As a result, the impulses growing out of this New Moon are tinged with the awareness of what the Venus retrograde has shown us so far. We have information about what we don’t want anymore, and what we’d like more of, please, and what we want (more likely, need) to redo.

This Moon’s energies could generate some sexy moments. It’s certainly injecting a streak of earthiness and practicality into hearts and desires.  Rambunctiousness for its own sake isn’t the point.  We want something we can actually have and physically experience.

Quality, not quantity is the likely result. Mars is moving into an easy flow with Pluto, which leads to paring back, focusing and intensifying.  Relationships especially have the potential to go deep, thanks to another open current Mars is enjoying, with Juno, the protector of marriage.

As the next four weeks unfold, notice the impulses coursing through. Let them lead where they may. And watch for invitations to stop and smell the roses. Feel the warming spring air. Run your hands across plants, trees and other living things. Sink into your body, into the earth, into the physicality of existence, on this plane.

March 2017: Two Steps Forward, One Look Back (Or More)

You’re in for a workout in March. We all are. The wind’s at our back, pushing us onward and hurrying the pace. Then other forces join in,  some jerking our heads backward, another sinking us deeper into our bodies.

How to respond? Scurry ahead? Turn around? Flee to the past? Throw a tantrum? Stuff your face?

Yep. To all.

March’s complex celestial clockwork splays our attention across multiple overlapping timelines. Some are identifiable and pop up for everyone. Others are customized for you, only you. All are infused into the equinox chart, which means time-hopping is an ongoing factor for all of spring.

The Role of Dec. 2013
Watch for echos all month long from late December 2013 (or its immediate aftermath).  Fundamental, tectonic shifts erupted then that reshaped your psyche, and likely relationships and family structure. Whatever grew out of those shifts is up for dramatic expansion now, as Jupiter forms an excruciatingly slow-building t-square with cosmic change agents Uranus and Pluto.

The first stage, peaking March 2, pits mushrooming relationship and fairness concerns against an explosive impulse for personal freedom. By March 30, relationship issues push for deep, lasting and powerful systemic changes — none of which would be possible without the world tilts of late 2013.

The process provides a good, long look at tensions in specific situations and agreements, then births their next big phase.  Be on the lookout for this playing out in political news. New horizons in power grabs — or crackdowns —  are possible by the end of this dance.

Curious to learn more? Read why December is relevant now. http://www.astrologyhub.com/evolutions-echoes-how-astrology-illuminates-cycles-of-change/

Old Flames & Financial Matters
While developments from late 2013 are blossoming and expanding, our attention is also being lured backwards. And sometimes yanked. The instigator is Venus, ruler of love, money, beauty, creativity — basically, everything we mortals value. Her domain is coming up for revisiting during her retrograde from March 4 to April 15.

Some of what’s surfacing involves current involvements and agreements, which you may review,  reconsider and possibly reignite.  Some of it is downright ghostly. Don’t be surprised if old loves and friends show up in dreams, social media or conversation — or in direct contact.

Old financial matters also have a way of returning during a Venus retrograde. Shelved creative projects or outlets could easily come back to life now as well.

Because Venus is in huntress mode, aka Aries, revisitings and visitations alike come impulsively and with high energy, if not passion.  Or tempers. They invite spontaneity, risk-taking and hair trigger reactions.  You could throw caution to the wind and do Lord knows what. You could just as likely put out smoldering fires and extinguish whatever tiny sparks might have remained.

Every bit of the past you encounter is an opportunity to resolve unfinished business (even if you thought it was done already) and to learn about yourself and what your heart values now, as opposed to then. Whether you take up with an old love or indulge in nothing more than memories, the lasting importance is what you learn about your own heart. Likely you’ll retrieve a part of yourself, or realize you’ve grown so much you would never get involved now with a person or situation like that.

You can instigate a lot of this journey yourself. Hunt down lingering business that affects your heart and finances and actively deal with it. Check in on people you used to be involved with. See where your heart lies uneasily in current involvements and address the discomfort.

Be bold. Speak up. Take chances. Declare your emotions (love, even) and see what follows. And have fun.

One caution:  don’t jump into any new relationship, job or deal that presents itself now, or splurge on a high-dollar item. New investments during a Venus retrograde have a way of turning out to not be worth what you thought. (Do. Not. Marry. Do. Not.) As the saying goes, all that glitters is not gold.

The fieriness surges when Mercury enters Aries on the 13th. The vagueness, confusion and unwitting telepathy of February dries up, and communication turns self-starting, spontaneous, impulsive, combustive, assertive, even reckless.

As hurried and impetuous as the second half of the month is, treat Venus’ backpedaling as part of  an ongoing investigation. Mercury will be heading to his own retrograde next month as Venus wraps hers up. Know that some of the investigation will extend into Mercury’s retreat, which will take him from Venus’ Taurus home back into Aries.

Meanwhile, Back in the Here and Now
As timelines begin to pile up on you, grounding cords conveniently lock into place. Developments that have been percolating stabilize and take form around March 5, when the ruler of our drive, Mars, completes an easy, open current with Saturn, lord of structure, order and commitment. If you’ve been itching for a situation to firm up, it may well then.

After that, how we go after what we want downshifts into the slow, practical and concrete. Mars, the ruler of our drive, leaves the fire of Aries on March 9 for the raw earthiness of Taurus, which he visits through April 20. His presence there not only keeps us in our bodies, but also encourages using and enjoying them. Food, drink and other sensual experiences have a marked gravitational pull, for you alone and à deux.

It’s an irresistibly sexy time. No point in fighting it. Not likely you’ll want to. Sheer physicality will stabilize you and momentarily slow time as developments mushroom and ghosts swirl around.

That gravitational pull toward physicality may be particularly strong at the Virgo Full Moon of the 12th. That Moon may also, however, encourage us to analyze and exercise discernment. Tension results….what to do with it, what to do…

The Equinox Chart
All of this has a life span that outlasts the month of March. The spring equinox, on March 20, when the Sun makes its annual entry into Aries, takes place in the midst of this head-rattling, escalating, impulsive, desire-driven, take-it-to-the-bank, life-changing blend of energies.  Because they are in place at the equinox, they will resonate to some degree throughout the entire spring —  with one twist.

The equinox chart imposes a measure of order on that unruly blend, through the stabilizing, limiting and constraining influence of the Moon tightly conjunct Saturn in Sagittarius. (It’s an uneasy peace, however, since that pair is in direct contact with rabble-rouser Uranus.) We may crave and seek structure; it may be slipped onto us. Integrity, ethics, beliefs or politics may play a role. If you’re looking for footing, the sure place is in your perspective on life.

And We’re Off
Stabilizing doesn’t mean slowing down, though. Aries gets two more blasts as the month winds down. Desire hits the gotta-have-it point when the Sun meets Venus on March 25. The gumption to go for it follows at the Aries New Moon on March 28. Raw life force is breaking out everywhere you look, and in you as well. If you’ve been lacking in nerve, you’ll find plenty coursing through you.

The month ends with communication settling into a practical, calmer, step-by-step mode, as Mercury enters Taurus on March 31. Running around takes on a slower pace as well.

Energies remain high, but we’re more likely to chew on an impulse before leaping on it. Besides, relationships are undergoing monumental systemic changes, building on the expansive tensions that started the month. There’s a lot to take in, process and communicate. You’ve got the time. Trust it.

Forecast for the 2017 Pisces New Moon Solar Eclipse

February 26, 2017
6:58 AM PST / 9:58 AM EST / 2:48 PM GMT
8 Pisces 12

Time for another growth spurt! This one’s been building for a couple of years, but it might still take you by surprise.

How are you at surfing? Or riding a wave? Not that you have much choice. And not that effort is required. A surge is coming, no matter what you do, with the force to carry you into the next 19 years.

The excitement is coming off the Pisces New Moon, which combines the cosmic whammy of a solar eclipse with an undercurrent of fire power. Even if it’s not hitting a point in your chart, it’s bound to be a watershed moment, pun fully intended.

The eclipse is finishing a cycle that’s been with us for two years, on the Virgo/Pisces axis. This cycle has had us revisiting, reevaluating and rebooting issues of boundaries vs. interconnectedness, logic vs. faith,  rationalization vs. compassion, and service vs. martyrdom.

We’re wrapping up and moving on from this process just as the next one is beginning, courtesy of the Leo/Aquarius eclipses, which began with the Leo Full Moon of February 10. The gear shift moves us from learning to remain intact while soaking in the sea of humanity, to the next challenge of shining brightly in the midst of a group.

The shift comes with shocks, jolts and goodbyes. A solar eclipse always closes something out and leaves something behind. This one stands to wash away situations, patterns and likely specific people.

Some departures could go unnoticed, or come with camouflage, unclear motive or subterfuge that takes months to be fully detected or appreciated. (Be on the lookout for sacrificial lambs.)

A sense of unreality is probable. (No! Not these days!) This could be gentle and lovely, as if the divine is at work, or maybe raw magic. It could also be disorienting, to the point of putting someone’s sanity in question.

Thank the New Moon’s host, Neptune, ruler of illusion, escapism, and transcendence. He’s not only in the thick of this party, but he’s also the first planet the Sun and the Moon will meet after they separate (the Moon six hours later, the Sun three days later, on March 1).

His close involvement amplifies the otherworldly, unhinged-from-normal-reality character of a Pisces eclipse. Surface appearances may have nothing to do with what is really happening.

Take heart, though. Since the event is a graduation exercise, we don’t have to fall prey to lower, delusional potentials. We’ve been dealing with and working on this area of life, and we can apply what we’ve learned to this final burst.

That means:  Know where the borders are between you and others. Safeguard your boundaries.(No codependency! Got that?) Use a connection to a higher force — faith, divine guidance, love — as the navigational tool for the waters, and for the likely fog (more likely, steam) that blankets them.

Trust is essential. There’s not much time to think. Likely you’re not going to see the biggest developments coming. Even if you do catch a glimpse, good luck doing anything about it.

We’re about to be transported by a massive energy surge (or several). Every solar eclipse brings an effect like hitting a power up in the old Nintendo Mario Cart game. In this instance, though, it’s more like you’re on a jet ski or powerboat. You’ll be traveling along and blam! The pace will quicken like crazy, and it’ll be all you can do to hang on for the ride.

You may feel as if a huge force is rising up within or under you and sweeping you along. This eclipse is turbo-charged with urgency, unpredictability, volatility, aggression, and passionate, nonrational impulses. With Neptune in the mix, you may not appreciate the power of those waters (or what’s in them with you) until you’re well underway.

That’s because this eclipse is powered by an intense and dynamic evolutionary surge (that word again!): a loose cardinal t-square linking the god of war and the cosmic rebel (Mars and Uranus), the lord of death and the underworld (Pluto) and the most expansive influence in the sky (Jupiter). This configuration plays out from February 22-27, as Mars squares Pluto, teams with Uranus, and then opposes Jupiter.

The configuration is raucous and energizing to the max. The combination promises to affect and reshape issues of home, family, tradition, nurturing and security, as the pressure rushes to find expression in the sign opposite Pluto, Cancer. (Political alert: Think immigration and borders have been hot issues? Just wait.)

The intensity peaks on the day of the New Moon, when Mars and Uranus meet. They’re unleashing the energetic equivalent of dynamite detonating, or a geyser erupting — sudden, explosive, violent, and propulsive; shattering and destroying as they shoot events forward and color the next six months as the eclipse plays out.

Resistance is futile. Situations will be changing in an instant, and time may feel like it’s speeding up like crazy. There’s no point in hanging on to any person or situation that slips away. Clutching may lead to something blowing up in your hand.

All you can do is ride with it — whether that means acting on motivation that’s igniting within you, or climbing on your surfboard and hollering, “Cowabunga!”

You’re up to this. You’ve been in training for the past two years, as the Virgo/Pisces eclipses have pushed you to simplify and reset your life, habits, and personal boundaries.  You are as prepared as is humanly possible.

There will be moments that take you by surprise. That take your breath away, that make your heart race, that make your head spin. That stun and probably sting. You may cry. You may swear angels are at work.

And you may feel exhilarated, lighter and freer than ever, and jubilantly, utterly alive.

You can do this.

When you land on stable ground a few months from now, look to see who’s made it to the same destination. And celebrate what you’ve done.

January 2017

Feeling fired up? Riled? Combative? Wondering how much more of this you can take?

The cosmos has something for that. A giant wrap-up, reboot and restart dominate the month of February. One eclipse cycle is starting while another is ending, with the combined effect of a powerful vacuum sucking us into a worm hole and spitting us out.

Much will become clear during this strange ride. Lives are changing, permanently, inside and out. Epiphanies will flash like lightning strikes, suddenly illuminating while zapping targets with an overload of energy.

A lot of games have hit the point of no longer being playable. Some connections, of all kinds — relationships, family, group, political, work — will not survive. Others will find previously unlikely common ground and unite. Still others will regroup, consolidate and negotiate how to travel together.

We’re starting a two-year revisiting of a core human challenge, expressing individuality while coexisting in a group. (Not unconnected side note: the same journey has the US revisiting who we are as a people.) Each end is getting quite the backing and buffeting this month as we do.

The new cycle comes first, on February 10, when the Leo Full Moon plugs into the stabilizing but activating fires of the Saturn/Uranus trine that have been blazing since December.  Validation, recognition and just plain being seen are core themes of this high-octane lunar eclipse, fueling emotional flare-ups and sending inner children and drama queens alike into the spotlight.

These and related issues are coming back around from 1998-2000, the last occurrence of this Leo/Aquarius eclipse family, which has returned for the next two years. Our priorities, circumstances and self-awareness have been radically refined since the last go-round, so the themes will likely play out differently this time, too.

The kick-off comes with impulsive, self-propelling daring bordering on ferocity. Venus, ruler of relationships, money and creativity, enters Aries, the sign action hero Mars is marching through, on the 3rd. She’s no delicate flower in this mode, waiting for a big, strong man to come to her rescue. She is a force of nature, more than capable of seizing what she wants. And the big, strong man is absolutely in sync.

For the rest of the month, desire and will are in hunter mode, on the prowl without hesitation or apology. We’ll be standing up for ourselves, pouncing on what we want and fighting on a moment’s notice — or without provocation.

Watch for acute, perhaps sudden awareness of who’s paying attention and who’s not, of who and what fan your spark and who and what put it out. Revelations will impel us toward the first in each pair and shut out the second.  And because of the chapter-closing nature of a lunar eclipse, some of the second is on the way out, for keeps.

As progress reports come in on the condition of our inner spark, we are simultaneously undergoing a graduation exercise in maintaining intact boundaries amid immersion in all of life. It’s one of the gifts of the Pisces New Moon on the 26th, which is the final in the Virgo/Pisces eclipses that started in March 2015.

Over the past two years, we’ve been resetting boundaries and notions of service vs. martyrdom, logic vs. faith, and intactness vs. enmeshment. The solar eclipse hits the refresh button one final, time and unleashes a wave that carries us dramatically onward, leaving much — and many  — in the past. The waters we’re riding teem with compassion, transcendence, escapism and more than a hint of forgiveness, especially directed inward. (Potential downside:  am updated version of scapegoating is likely in those waters as well.)

The ride is hardly gentle or smooth, at least not initially. The final week of the month shoots us through an intense gauntlet that challenges, furthers and tempers individual drives and agendas, and forces potent action on situations and structures that have been in upheaval and turmoil for the past five years.

The ending stretch is a hotbed of anger, eruptions, accidents, blows for autonomy, and relationship standoffs, as Mars squares Pluto, joins Uranus and opposes Jupiter. Compromise is in short supply; Davids and Goliaths abound. Funny thing is, everyone assumes that he’s David. Even the big and powerful.

What’s happening is a more forceful replay, and a forceful furthering, of the energies of the last week of December 2013. Think back to how family/tribal foundations evolved then, for an indication of what’s likely now.

Whether you remember that time or not, think of February’s gauntlet as a birth canal. We’re forcing out new ways of coexisting. The passageway is tight, dark and uncomfortable, and some of the pressure could be painful. But it’s pushing us. Elsewhere.

Forecast for the 2017 Aquarius New Moon

January 27-28, 2017
4:07 PM PST / 7:07 PM EST / 12:07 AM GMT
8 Aquarius 15

Who cares what the calendar says? Three weeks into the year, it finally feels like New Year’s. Not to mention like a new world.

That’s not just because the Aquarius New Moon launches the Chinese lunar year.  The sky is delivering the atmospheric gear shift that was missing when December 31 last gave way to January 1. We’re crawling out of the misty waters that have dominated life since then, drying off and turning our gaze forward.

The inherent detachment of the Aquarius New Moon promises to put those waters far behind — or rather, far below. It gives us the benefit of a bird’s eye view. The distance makes it easier to look at connections, networks and people without being so embroiled in dramas. We see more of the big picture and more of the future (at least, more of what’s possible in it).

Highly charged is an understatement for what lies ahead. One of the main reasons, and one of the year’s defining characteristics, reverberate in this New Moon:  the fiery collaboration between Saturn, lord of structure, and Uranus, agent of radical, unpredictable change, which are the  ancient and modern rulers of Aquarius.

They’ve backed off a bit from the unimpeded current that flowed between them in December, but they are still a team, coupling order and chaos, invigorating and igniting us. Their high-octane possibilities are beautifully synchronous with the Chinese Year of the Fire Rooster. Like an exuberant rooster crowing at the dawn, the Aquarius Moon’s rulers are an awakening, enlivening force that will not let us slumber this year (or lie still for long).

After years of upheaval and last year’s protracted daze, we have the motivation and the means to get going. The specific destination is not important at the moment; in fact, it may be impossible to discern just yet. The journey is the point, and its nature and purpose are self-actualization.

This New Moon is a gateway. It’s the lead in to the next eclipse cycle, which begins with the Leo Full Moon on February 11. The Leo/Aquarius eclipses will bring up issues of retaining individuality while existing within a group, with emphasis on how far and brightly your light shines.

For now, the focus is on individuality. Shake off those emotions, especially ones you soaked up from others. Wring yourself out. View your life as Mr. Spock. Put on your future vision. Embrace  the glorious, outrageous, unique you that is your core. And let it come out and play.

“The privilege of a lifetime is being who you are.” — Joseph Campbell

Forecast for the 2017 Cancer Full Moon

January 12, 2017
3:34 AM PST / 6:34 AM EST / 11:34 AM GMT
22 Cancer 27 / 22 Capricorn 27

How’re your food cravings these days? Your moods? Staying close to home? Tearing up at ads? Missing your Mommy? It’s all part of the cellular pull of the Cancer Full Moon. If only the rest of the sky would let us crawl under a blankie and enjoy.

A full moon always brings emotions and nonrational impulses to a crest, and none so much as when she is in her natural sign of Cancer. Have you ever gone back home or visited relatives and found old childhood needs, behaviors and dynamics resurfacing? A similarly automatic regressing happens under a Cancer Full Moon.

It stirs issues of home, tradition, comfort and nurturing, in the context of long-term goals and security, and responsibility and dependability. Throws in heaps of shoulds and guilt. And poses the ever-changing questions of who’s the mommy, who’s the daddy, and who gets to be the baby.

No wonder folks are hypersensitive. What we want is something — a hug, a doughnut, a soft stuffed animal — to make us feel safe and secure.

Unfortunately, plenty out there in the world is making us feel anything but that. A lot of people aren’t getting with the program…though, surprisingly, a lot are. Just not consistently who you might have expected.

We’re feeling a monumental evolutionary surge. The Sun has just passed the clarifying, simplifying scythe of Pluto, agent of unavoidable change. He remains close enough for our consciousness to tingle with awareness of our newly honed sense of self.

We can’t go back to how we used to be.  Relationships, alliances and agreements are now playing catch-up in response. They’re bearing the brunt of the unavoidable undercurrents and stresses accompanying this Full Moon.

Part of the tension comes from boundless Jupiter being in Libra, aka Relationship Central, exactly in between the Sun and the Moon. Reason and emotion are bearing down equally on him, demanding awareness, expression and action.

All three participants, the Sun, Moon and Jupiter (forming the dynamic configuration of a tight t-square), are getting riled up non-stop. Agitation, disruption and seemingly unresolvable conflict are in the mix. Perhaps you’ve noticed?

They come from the fiery, uncontrollable duo that has been inflaming the core wound of our nation’s psyche: volatile, unpredictable Uranus, advocate for rebellion, liberation and alternate perspectives, and his current traveling companion Eris, goddess of discord. Lovely couple, right?  Just who you want to have in your home. Where they’ve taken up residence for the foreseeable future.

They’re opposite Jupiter, upping the noise level and making it hard to find common ground or points of compromise. They’re arguing for breaking off on your own, in some cases through other people acting hell bent on stirring up trouble. They aren’t inclined to shut up, either.

Hence the extremes in emotional waters — some turbulent enough to warrant dramamine, some as soothing and nourishing as amniotic fluid. This year’s Cancer Full Moon is showing, more than the usual, who and what feels safe, and who and what decidedly does not.

Based on that status report, the concept of family, so sacred to Cancer, may well be up for redefinition. This goes for legal and blood family as well as chosen and tribal connections.

Relatives are the first front. They’re center stage now, whether they’re in your life (and face) at the moment or popping up energetically. You might be finding certain dramas extending past the holidays, or be experiencing your emotional reactions to them only now.

More than in the past, lines of demarcation have a lot to do with politics, world view and value systems. Thank Saturn, lord of order, rules, the patriarchy and the status quo and, of course, the Capricorn Sun. He’s in the sign of Sagittarius, where approaches to and philosophies of life can become fiery and judgmental.  He’s cooperating with Jupiter in Libra, while fueling those rabblerousers Uranus and Eris.

That teamwork is adding to the condescending, patronizing, self-righteous and condemning blasts so many of us are receiving and observing (but not sending out, right?), and the widening of gulfs that feel less and less bridgeable.

Discord is running rampart, straight into the heart of families. With so little room for peacemaking, compromise or reconciliation — for the moment, at least — ties of blood and shared memories are losing their hold. Instead, this Cancer Full Moon is awakening appreciation of trusted family, chosen family, safe havens and realigned tribes.

It’s also steeling your backbone to stop looking for safety and nurturing from people who are showing so clearly that they are unwilling or incapable of giving it.  And to stop feeling responsible for people, no matter what their legal relationship to you may be, who don’t want, need or appreciate your efforts to care for them.

The good news:  What’s safe and supportive has staying power. We’ve got the motivation to embrace and protect it. Saturn is conjunct Juno, queen of the gods and protector of marriage.  They’re encouraging deals, alliances, serious relationships and legal marriages, complete with license and rings. (Cue Beyonce.)

The bottom line, so dear to Capricorn?  What makes you feel safe and secure is up to you. This Full Moon promises to show you what that means and inspire you to cherish and protect it. And maybe deliver an updated answer to the eternal questions of who’s the mommy, who’s the daddy and who gets to be the baby. (Hint: Could be you.)

January 2017

January sets the tone for the year:  blasts of forceful, fiery action, passions and emotions, interspersed with pockets of contemplation, grace and renewal. Think of a cosmic hand feverishly working a cigarette lighter,  taking a periodic break, then returning to the lighter with renewed, relentless vigor.

The high energy of late December is still with us as the clock strikes midnight. Then foglights — or heartlights — lead into the year. The air of nostalgia, gentleness and moment outside of time are only a way station, as action hero Mars joins Neptune, lord of transcendence and illusion. (Since the sea is also his terrain, this meeting could foreshadow fighting for — or over — water as a theme of the year.)

Those qualities permeate relationships and the way we look at our fellow humans when love goddess Venus slides into Pisces herself on 3rd.  Compassion and empathy flow more freely; idealism, magic and romance are in the air. All these qualities infuse Venus’ desires and the marching orders she’s giving to her consort Mars, and carry on all month long.

The sparking begins when retrograde Mercury backs into Sagittarius on the 4th. Snarls, investigations and do-overs switch from plodding and practical to impulsive, high energy and political. Look for reasons to laugh; they abound.

The cosmic hand bears down on us from the 7th – 11th. Self-awareness heightens. Pressure mounts to break out of prisons (inner, family, relationship) and strip down to core personal truths.

While we’re morphing, pronounced touchiness is likely at the Cancer Full Moon on the 12th. Issues of emotional security and sustenance boil over and inspire search parties for Mommies and blankeys.  Spoilers: (1) They’re an inside job; (2) the optimal response to the pressures:   consolidating your own personal power.

rocess counts to mount till the 12th, when the winged messenger regains solid footing and practical orientation in Capricorn. That day brings the second of the month’s pockets of contemplation and renewal.

Coinciding with the Cancer Full Moon, this one carries a risk for squalling (see above), but also a wondrous oasis of escapism. It’s not only harmless, but absolutely what the doctor ordered:  a magical blend of earthly love and compassion (Venus) and  divine levels of the same (Neptune). Soak good and long. These waters are balm for heart and soul (not to mention catnip for certain star-blessed romances).

Then comes another push, as Mars engages law-and-order Saturn in a shoving match, on the 19th.  A steamy force emerges from the waters and demands accountability, responsible action, perhaps a sacrifice. Watch for issues of how well personal codes line up with spiritual guidance or the greater good. Shortfalls require corrective action.

Another pause arrives on the 25th, this one with profoundly curative properties benefitting desires, creativity, relationships and issues of worthiness. Venus, ruler of all we value, meets Chiron, the healer who gave up immortality to become fully human and overcome a wound that would not heal. They’re opening a font of gentleness, compassion, loving kindness and forgiveness, all of which can flow from you to yourself.

Just for this moment, it’s okay to be human. It’s easy to see commonality in fellow humans. It’s easy to view others through the eyes of God. Remember what you see and experience and sear the experience into your heart. They may slip off the radar as the year intensifies.

Venus has her own shoving match with Saturn on the 27th. The clock is ticking. Boundless love finds its limit. Connections feel the call for structure and commitment, or for pulling back. One approach is steamy, the other dampening. Both could lead to comparing and contrasting a particular connection (or relationships in general) with long-held attitudes and beliefs, and seeing which end has to give.

The calculus becomes more objective the next day at the Aquarius New Moon, on the 27th. In its detached, intellectual light, stepping aside a few inches comes easily. Take the breathing room. Take the elevated perspective. Take the future vision and drink in where you’re heading.

While you’re still getting your bearings, the cosmic hand hits the lighter but good and inspired action follows. Bravado, gumption, derring-do, risks, aggression, anger, assaults, strikes, just plain getting up and getting going — all erupt and spread when warrior god Mars enters his home sign of Aries on the 28th.

His homecoming coincides with secrets emerging from behind the scenes, secrets that have been flirting with exposure since Mercury turned away from Pluto and went retrograde on December 19. The winged messenger meets the lord of the underworld at last on the 29th.

Disclosures are likely involving levels of power and money that evade most humans; the political and international news promises to be stunning. On the mere mortal level, watch for revelations and truths that clarify and simplify much (though perhaps with a sharp intake of breath).

Metaphoric breaking glass follows. With a chaser of high-octane activity in response.

Forecast for the 2016 Capricorn New Moon

December 28 – 29, 2016
10:53  PM PST / 1:53 AM EST / 6:53 AM GMT
7 Capricorn 59

The New Year vibe gets a head start thanks to this year’s Capricorn New Moon. It’s bringing goals, foundations and material security front and center as 2016 winds down and we head toward its successor.

The impulse is rising in even people who aren’t normally inclined to make resolutions. And for those who do, this year’s crop is not likely to have many repeats — items that carry over from one year to the next without much happening (besides being moved from list to list….)

This behavioral shift grows out of the shake-up going on with Capricorn’s ruler. What’s happening to him is refreshing our perspectives and tilting much in our lives.

Saturn, lord of order, responsibility and commitment, is in a mutually amplifying collaboration with Uranus, lord of chaos, liberation and unpredictable change. They’re injecting the old with radical possibilities (if not blasting it to smithereens) — and bringing form and grounding to gotta-be-me quests.

Previous norms don’t hold now. This is not merely true of what we’re seeing on a national and global scale. It applies directly to you. The path stretching ahead might have been unthinkable a few years back. It matches your current experience of life and understanding (and value) of yourself. So do the goals you’re inspired to set now, the practicalities you consider and the way you proceed. All are responding to shake-ups, new directions, flashes of genius, unexpected developments and a relentless, nigh on feral drive to live for yourself, darn it.

There’s no rush to set any of these. Saturn takes his time. Capricorn wants value for the long haul, not instant fixes. Retrograde Mercury has the Moon’s back in this, too. Standing right with the New Moon, he is not only encouraging slowing down, but also inviting going back over some of those practicalities.

Matters that turn up now — stray bits of info, disclosures, evidence of confusion or misunderstandings — have useful, practical potential. This is also true of annoying technology glitches. Every snag is a prompt to put your foundation in order before you go flying off on next year’s fiery energies. Opportunities to learn more and fine tune will soon follow, after Mercury goes direct in January.

This path to the future has another uncommon characteristic: encouragement not to push goals, or charge after them, or slam fists on tables and demand them. Mars, ruler of our drive and action, is in the company of grand illusionist Neptune, in the interconnected waters of Pisces.

They’re the opposite of the concrete that is so key to Saturn and Capricorn. Push in water and who knows where it will go, besides eventually back on the pusher. Instead, a receptive, feminine approach is in order: setting targets and being open to them coming to us, or our being led to them.

Pulling this off requires tools that don’t fit in a hand, but promise great worldly impact all the same. Faith, imagination, visualization and divine guidance, for starters. Awareness of the existence of others is the umbrella for other possibilities, such as compassion, gentleness, kindness, empathy and love.

Don’t ignore magic and miracles, either. They’re definitely among Neptune’s gifts. With Mars heading right for him, they’re easier to net than logic would suggest.

So think about your goals, practical and tailored to current-time you. Call on intangible help and release them with faith. Be open to magic and miracles; in fact, request and expect them. And then go with the flow.

Forecast for October 2016

“Overture, curtains, lights,
This is it, you’ll hit the heights,
And, oh, what heights we’ll hit,
On with the show, this is it.” – Bugs Bunny Show theme song

December brings a head-spinning mix of inevitability and unpredictability. Don’t expect it to go according to either tradition or plan. Keep your mind and schedule open, follow your instincts and you might actually have fun.  Having popcorn on hand might prove useful, too.

Been stuck? Waiting for motivation? Or the right opening? Not any more. Santa (or your holiday benefactor of choice) is delivering cases of Popeye’s spinach that unleashes startling, nigh-on superhuman action.

We’re being catapulted out of the upheaval of the past five years and into directions that upheaval made possible. Everything that has broken, cracked open, shifted and reshaped over the past five years has led to the events of this month.

The next stage of the adventure is here, and the skies are giving us a high-octane send-off. Saturn and Uranus, the lord of structure and the guy who blows structures up, are igniting the first of three booster rockets that define the trajectory of the next year. (Rounds two and three come in May and November.)

The inaugural launch has Jupiter in Libra amping up (trining) Saturn and triple-dog-daring Uranus (via an opposition), effectively throwing flame accelerant into the mix. Uranus is intensifying the launch with a dragging energy that comes from nearing the end of his retrograde. Blast-off happens on Christmas Eve. (Oh, goodie, right?) We’ll be feeling the build-up in the weeks before — and the backdraft well beyond.

Jump on this and ride. This blend of controlled planetary firepower is firming, grounding and stabilizing the dramatic, innovative, going-for-broke developments so many of us are being compelled to pursue. (If you’re not acquainted with the concept of self-actualization; read up on it; we’re in for an epidemic.)

The teamwork is also zapping established ways of thinking and doing — tilting them, electrifying them, blasting them apart. Loose cannon on a rampage is one aspect of this potential, as we’ve been seeing in the collective (okay, the political news). We’re in for a startling, unforeseeable, possibly previously unthinkable development or three, a fitting cap for a year that can be charitably described as weird.

Don’t panic! The disruptions can be fun, freeing and beneficial, too. Amid this volatility, traditions hold little sway. Consider yourself off the hook from anything that does not enhance your life or bring you joy. This is a holiday season to do whatever you darn well please. Make it up as you go along, even.

As tricky as this high-octane blend sounds, the skies are beaming down plenty of reason to get on board.  Links from action hero Mars to the firestarters have us raring to go as the month begins. While we’re ramping up, thoughts and communications keep us fixed on the concrete, practical and long-term, thanks to messenger god Mercury’s entry into Capricorn on the 2nd.

Venus gives relationships breathing room and a 20,000 feet-high perspective stretching far into the future, when she moves into Aquarius on the 7th.  The Sun steps into the dance when he collaborates with the outer planet trio in the second week, which also brings a boost in detachment (and scads of data) from the Gemini Full Moon.

From mid-month on, that mental focus on terra firma has us slowing, turning around, rethinking and flirting with do-overs. The impetus comes from the double whammy of Mercury stationing retrograde and Mars entering anything but straightforward Pisces on December 19right as the calendar is hurtling us into the thick of the holidays and year-end crunch.

With Mars out of forward, march mode, this Mercury retrograde presents more than its usual challenges, adding to the anything-can-happen (or be revealed, she says cryptically) vibe coming off Jupiter, Saturn and Uranus. Take ordinary retrograde precautions and then some. Approach communication as susceptible to the misleading, confusing and truthy. Make allowances for technology and traffic developing snarls and blips for reasons that are not always apparent. Rely on your inner GPS.

And work the double whammy to your benefit. At the very moment you feel your life escalating into excitement and adventure,  this planetary pair can draw attention to foundational matters and encourage soft, indirect action that flows around or permeates blocks. Do less, so you can do more. Reopen plans, goals, traditions for discussion (or simply back out). Play the backhand that comes so naturally to Mars in Pisces. Direct requests or demands are going to draw resistance and blow back. Try a little tenderness. Lure what you want.

This vibe permeates the solstice, which takes place on December 21, and reverberates throughout the winter season.

As weird, unfamiliar and potentially unsettling as these dynamics sound, the year’s final week holds the promise of sunniness and inner peace. Wherever that first booster rocket shoots us, the initial returns are positive. Happy hearts abound on Christmas Day, which sees Venus cavorting merrily with Jupiter, Saturn and Uranus.

The month and year end with clarity (the Sun conjuncting Mercury) and the concerted action and emotional goal-setting inspired by the Capricorn New Moon, on the 29th.  New horizons are calling that same day, as Uranus drops his drag and stations direct. Before heading out, take a dip in the grace and harmony between the Sun and dreamweaver Neptune. They add gentleness and nostalgia as the clock runs out on a most unusual year.

Forecast for the 2016 Sagittarius New Moon

November 29, 2016
7 Sagittarius 42
4:18 PST / 7:18 EST / 12:18 GMT

Beliefs are just ideas until put into action. This year’s Sagittarius New Moon is an invitation to live them.

Well, more than an invitation, actually. Firm suggestion is more like it. Okay: demand.

This Moon may be generally philosophically inclined, but this year’s model has a dynamic bent that will not be denied.  It’s not the reality-upending variety of dynamic we’ve been experiencing lately, though. This Moon’s dynamic flavor inspires action that expands and stabilizes, with an emphasis on structures and commitments involving hearts and values.

What’s Propelling Us
We are feeling the pull of multiple defining moments in recent history, all of which are placing cosmic hands against our backs and shoving, but good. Think back to the following times, and connect the dots to where you are now.

The last week of December 2013 brought a tectonic shift in patterns and foundations, particularly involving relationships and family traditions, when Mars in Libra formed a T-square with the cosmic change agents, Uranus and Pluto.  That shift is currently being pressured into phenomenal expansion and growth.  A T-square involving the same signs accompanies this Moon, now with bigger-is-better Jupiter in Libra and that sign’s ruler Venus with Pluto at the brunt of the T-square.

That focal point warrants emphasizing: the planets of desire and money, mere mortal level and huge, primal, outside-rational-confines level, are together on the receiving end of escalating pressure to break free and evolve. And that pressure is emptying into Cancer: our concept of home, family, tradition, nurturing and security.

On a collective level, the line-up reflects fierce issues of values, economics, and tribal definitions .(Who’s part? Who’s not?) On your personal level, consider how your current relationship rule book / connections / desires connect to what shifted for you that week in 2013. Something has sprouted from that crack in the plates and is blossoming.

This Moon also carries the force of the reboot we all received from September’s solar eclipse. The Sagittarius Moon’s square to the eclipse point is a cosmic shove forward, arguing for taking those post-eclipse improvements seriously. What did you clean up or close out? What boundaries did you redraw? They are moving into insistent realities asking for you to commit.

Underscoring that:  the North Node is occupying the degree of that eclipse. The future has arrived. It’s time to move away from old wounds, victimization, sabotaging and thinking that is wishful at best, delusional at worst. It’s time to head for tomorrow.

Other late summer/early fall moments play a role as well. This Moon is a moving-on point from determination and focused will (and perhaps some anger) that locked in late August, and then the heart (or the resources to back that determination) getting on board late September. At those times Mars, then Venus merged with Saturn, lord of structure, near the degree where the New Moon is taking place.

Issues of integrity and ethics are live and making it increasingly difficult to stay a course that conflicts with yours. A slogan from early feminism is weirdly and directly applicable: The personal is political. These days, the reverse is, too.

Speaking of politics: Have some strategies, tips & popcorn for the post 11/9 world

So much pushing us; so much incentive; so much pressure. It’s not out of the blue, though. It’s all an organic outgrowth of matters that have been brewing inside you, and brewing between you and a certain person or two. And it enables firming the situation(s) up, so everyone can relax into  and rely on them.

Action Comes Easily
Responding to this call comes naturally, too. The ruler of Sagittarius, Jupiter, is in an easy channel of energy with Mars, ruler of drive and action. The combo encourages grand action with a view to the future. That could well be progressive, aware of the existence and role of others (social action, for example) and seeking negotiation, cooperation and advocacy. It could be detached, iconoclastic and going about things its own way.

However the Mars/Jupiter teamwork manifests — and however you chose to express it — it has the power to mushroom tiny efforts wildly beyond the intended.

Grab this and run. Expand your vision of what’s possible. Dream big, then bigger, then bigger again.

And then do something. Especially in your dealings and agreements with others.

Major Relationship Developments
This New Moon ushers a phase in relationships with enormous positive potential. This is particularly so for connections that veer from what has been the wounded norm, into mutually supportive, mutually enhancing pairings.

They’re becoming the new model for long-term relationships. Watch for significant gear shifts in that direction growing out of this Moon phase, which is operating as a gateway. (Inspirational image:  the Four of Wands in the Tarot, which depicts a man and woman celebrating publicly at an archway made of wands and garlands.)

Bonds that ramp up or lock in now have long-term durability. That’s not only because love goddess Venus is in Capricorn (and getting the evolutionary whammy discussed above). Another reason is her reinforcement. Juno, the protector of marriage, is right alongside the New Moon. She’s tapping on ring fingers and drawing attention to beliefs about union, commitment and structures that formalize them. Flings will be rare this holiday season. Mistletoe moments with lasting power, on the other hand …

Visibility Advisory
Going with your guidance remains the preferred course of navigation.  We’re still operating under murky visibility. Neptune may have gone direct on the 19th, but his clouds of confusion, delusion and, if we’re lucky, transcendence haven’t dissipated. Saturn, ruler of the authority and the status quo, whipped them up for most of the year, and they’re getting a renewed boost from a harsh aspect to the New Moon.

The square could lend high romance to the relationship developments rolling out in this Moon phase. Less pleasant possibilities lurk in the cloudbanks, though. Let your principles guide you through them. Odds are, you won’t be doing it alone.
