2017 Aquarius Lunar Eclipse

August 7, 2017
11:10 AM PDT / 2:10 PM EDT / 6:10 PM GMT
15 Aquarius 25

What’s that sound? Gasps? Exploding light bulbs? Lightning strikes? Slamming doors? Sighs of recognition and relief?

How about: All of the above?

The racket — and dawning recognition — are part of this month’s Aquarius Full Moon, the first of two eclipses that are rocking and reshaping our realities. This one clears and primes us. The second, the solar eclipse of the Leo New Moon on the 21st, skyrockets us along our way.

Full Moons always bring emotions to a crest. Lunar eclipses take that trait to the limit, and beyond. This one, though, promises a different experience.

This most emotional event is in the most intellectual and detached of signs, Aquarius, which has the ability to view situations at a tilt, or upside down, or inside out, or from some other angle that wouldn’t have occurred to any other sign. This puts us at maximum observer mode as the usual gifts of a lunar eclipse roll out.

Emotions are hitting high tide, as they always do at the full moon, and this time they come with super-sized drama and a kick, courtesy of warrior god Mars’ standing with the fiery Leo Sun.

An uncomfortable, insistent force is staring down this Moon, like a restless kid in a car kicking the driver’s seat and taunting the adult to react. Inner children are running amuck. The masculine archetype is in overdrive, promoting, pushing, forcing, assaulting.

“Me me me me me” is the propelling force, spoken or not, conscious or not. True colors are showing. Ploys for attention are escalating. So is awareness of validation and appreciation: where you shine, who gets you, who doesn’t, who’s trying to steal your light, who’s trying to diminish it or put it out.

Action and reaction are all the rage — in many instances, literally. People are knocking over game boards, standing their ground and acting out, taking their toys and heading elsewhere.

The ego is screaming, “Look at me! Are you looking at me?” The feminine is taking it all in and replying….”Fascinating.” And coming up with a vision for the future.

Don’t run after anyone or situation that undervalues you, or fails to see you, or, most of all, leaves. A lunar eclipse closes doors and chapters that defy reopening. Bless every ending. Each does truly benefit you and your future, whether the good is immediately visible.

Find an elevated perch, assume Mr. Spock mode and watch the spectacle unfold. The vantage point will position you not only for unparalleled entertainment, but also for the revelations that come with a lunar eclipse: About what has been going on in the corners, behind your back and even right in front of you. About other people. (For some, “Bye bye!” For others, “Well, hello there…”)

Most importantly, about how you feel about all this, and particularly about developments that have been brewing since February, when the first eclipse occurred in the current Leo/Aquarius eclipse cycle. (Yes, some of that acting out might well be by you. Observers aren’t always immune to emotions and primal instincts. Remember what happened to Spock when the Vulcan mating imperative overtook him?)

Some revelations will be shocking or jolting. All will be freeing. The Uranus-ruled lunar eclipse puts many of the givens of your life in a different light. We’re in for an epidemic of changes of heart, abrupt and in some cases cold. We’re making changes in the line-up of our teams, based on who plays well with us and who does not. And that boils down to who enjoys and appreciates us and inspires the best, fullest expression of our selves.

All of this is occurring in cartoonishly large format. There’s more reason for that than a lunar eclipse’s fundamental nature of a full moon on steroids. Credit the direct participation of bigger-is-better Jupiter, in Libra, sign of relationships and social contracts.

He’s in the easy flow of a trine to the Aquarius Moon, mushrooming the detached, intellectual potential, as well as the role of relationships in this event. He’s making the opportunity aspect of a sextile to the Leo Sun and Mars, which opens the door to both self-aggrandizement and standing up for one’s self.

Jupiter also brings optimism, expansiveness and silver linings. He’s leading a singalong of “Always Look On the Bright Side of Life,” the ending song from Life of Brian. Sing or whistle along from your Spock-like perch. Look for evidence of beneficial changes in relationship ground rules. It exists. Look, too, for the good in every relationship shape-shift, the departures as well as the new forms or stages.

There’s more to come, of course, as there always is with the playing out of an eclipse. Keep an eye out for planets changing signs, because they will touch this eclipse’s ruler Uranus on the way out the door. At 28 Aries 39, Uranus is currently the planet of latest degree, the one closest to the end of a sign. As planets aspect that degree, they won’t so much turn out the light as trigger his lightning.

Upcoming times to watch: Venus, ruler of love, money and beauty, will team with Uranus mid-September as she leaves Leo, unlocking hearts and desires. In the last week of that month, Jupiter will oppose Uranus and ramp up the drive for self-determination at any cost.

For now, just observe. And feel. And observe some more.

August 2017

Volatile, catalyzing, head-spinning, game-changing: August is a month (or is that: minefield?) of milestones.

They come with revelations, departures, confusion, high-octane passions and a faster than fast pace. Fuel accelerant is pouring into impulses that have been building since December. (Self-actualization is one of them. Specific situations should be easy to spot.)

A drive is blazing that defies extinguishing or containment. Directing it may be possible, though. So is riding it. And it might actually be fun. (At times.)

The influence that kicks off the month builds more slowly and probably with less fanfare than what follows. It will pervade the headlines all the same, if you look for it, and run like a background program whether anyone is paying attention or not.

Foundation Work Continues

Seismic shifts and super-sized evolutionary surges hit foundations, infrastructures and institutions as the month begins and Jupiter squares Pluto. The pressure will mount with the subtlety of a lobster pot for nearly two months, not finding release till Jupiter completes his opposition to norm-shattering Uranus at the end of September.

More immediately noticeable in the first three weeks: Dramatic action and reaction are the general order of things, with warrior god Mars accompanying the Sun till he enters Virgo on the 22nd. This traveling pair is a double-dose of the masculine archetype, firing up courage, assertiveness, aggression, combativeness and anger. Everyone’s got a fix-it gene. No waiting to be asked; everyone’s going after what they want.

Aquarius Full Moon Lunar Eclipse

The month’s first eclipse, a lunar, brings a paradox: simultaneously experiencing defcon 2 level emotions and observing them with the intellectual curiosity of Mr. Spock. Watch for spiked understanding of your own inner workings, particularly in response to developments since February’s lunar eclipse in Leo. Much will take on a different light — a lunar eclipse always brings revelations — amid the clatter of doors slamming and chapters closing.

It’s Time For Another … Mercury Retrograde!

A cosmic invitation to think things over continues throughout the month. We won’t always welcome the suggestion, but declining isn’t much of an option. Communication, technology and travel are a patience-testing ground of snarls, complications, malfunctions and delays once Mercury stations retrograde on the 12th.

The implications may sneak up on us, since the two love and creativity planets, Venus and Neptune, are making beautiful music that day and lulling us all into reverie. We have weeks to wise up to the retrograde, which lasts till September 5.

He’s in one of his home signs, Virgo, which puts a practical spin on everything that unfolds – or misfires. Details are more than the usual tripwire. Annoyances may be … annoyingly … concrete.

On the plus side: the sign of the messenger’s retreat fits in with a retrograde’s potential for reorganizing and tidying matters up. Not to mention that tripping over words and our metaphoric shoe laces may keep us down here on earth while other influences threaten to blast us off it. And we may welcome a breather, even if it comes in the form of a retrograde snafu.

Read more in my guide How to Survive Mercury Retrograde in 2017.

Can’t Stop The Grand Fire Trine

Those other influences come from the fire that dominates the middle of the month, with the Sun, the New Moon (solar eclipse) and Mars running a circuit with Saturn and Uranus. Saturn and Uranus, lords of order and disruption, have been teaming since December. Their unlikely collaboration has been simultaneously bringing form to new growth and shattering structures and conventions. Now ego, heart and will get into the loop, forming the free flow of energy of a grand trine in fire.

Total Eclipse of the Sun

These linkages would be incendiary on their own. They take on super nova impact from coinciding with a total solar eclipse at the end of Leo, on August 21. A solar eclipse blots out people and situations, never to return, and hits the reset button. This time, with the added kick from Mars, our systems come back on line with a breathtaking, propulsive force, shooting us forward as if we’ve hit a power up in a racing game.

The Mars-powered solar eclipse is igniting the self-actualization imperative of the Saturn/Uranus trine. The explosion is blowing up conventions, norms, beliefs. shoulds, and situations built on them — commitments and teachings that have restrained you from living your own life and expressing your own being.

It won’t be all fun and games. At all. Some people will not accurately recognize these rumblings and will respond by acting out. With retrograde Mercury spawning misunderstandings and misstatements (and, alright, lies), it’ll be easy to react without confronting peaceably and unraveling the snarl.

Patience will be in short supply. Tempers will flare. Anger will have the effect of eating cases of Popeye’s spinach. Be mindful of who and what are in your line of fire.

Venus in Fur (Leo)

The rebooting plays out long beyond August. It may be easier to chew on what is transpiring after the Sun enters Virgo on the 22nd. A wave of noticeable shake-ups, break-ups and breakthroughs follows when Venus, ruler of our desires, approaches maximum nesting mode and slams the agent of unpredictable change, Uranus, on August 24.

She makes a quick change herself, taking on the flair and drama and grandeur of Leo on the 25th. It’s out of the kitchen (except, perhaps, for showy parties) and into the world, in search of attention, sun and fun. However the eclipses and grand trine are playing out, our hearts are beginning to get on board.

The month ends with potential for optimism and locking in some benefits from the hubbub. The 27th brings an opportunity to stabilize, via a cooperative link between beneficent Jupiter and structure-loving Saturn.

Messenger god Mercury jumps back into the fire of Leo on the 30th and criss-crosses the solar eclipse degree until mid-September. High-energy exchanges are a given. Ideas may move from intriguing concept to burning personal quest. The combustible atmosphere continues. These fires aren’t going out any time soon.

Forecast for the 2017 Taurus New Moon

2017 Taurus New Moon
April 26, 2017
5:16 AM PDT / 8:16 AM EDT / 1:16 GMT
6 Taurus 27

Buds are blossoming. Critters are stirring. What’s coming into being for you? That’s the focus and the growth potential of the Taurus New Moon.

This Moon, in the first, most primal earth sign of the zodiac, invites attention to the physical circumstances of your life. A thought or a look is not enough. It’s time to cultivate, immerse, experience, enjoy, touch, taste and savor — and set up the conditions that will bring you more.

A newly honed awareness is at work of what it is you actually want.  Have you noticed that your  preferences aren’t what they were? That certain foods or activities have lost their appeal, while others have to come to the fore? That your sense of your own worth has shifted into something more … worthy?

All that and more have become clearer over the past month-plus as the Taurus Moon’s ruler, Venus, sprinkled your path, social media, thoughts and likely dreams with memories, teachable moments and realizations; with trinkets, fool’s gold and recognition of nuggets you already possess.

Your tastes are refined, your appetite whetted. Now comes a Moon for seeking satisfaction.

Go easy on intangibles and far-off, maybe-someday bucket list items, if you use this lunation to make wishes or set intentions. (Though this New Moon does offer a portal to inspiration, magic and miracles, via a wide applying sextile to Neptune — you just have to not only be open to them, but also actively reach for and grab any that show up.)

This New Moon is more suited to the here and now — emphasis on the here, with a bit of slack on the now.

Instant gratification isn’t part of the process, though grazing and nibbling are likely along the way. Any Taurus Moon is a leisurely affair. This one sees ruler Venus in no rush at all.

The goddess of love, money and earthly delights is making a slow getaway from her six week retrograde (the occasion for the above-mentioned sprinkling). She’s floating at the end of Pisces, in the last degrees of the zodiac, and still quivering from recent exact links to Chiron, keeper of abiding wounds, and Saturn, ruler of order, time and adulting.

As she moseys out of Pisces for most of the rest of the month, she’ll continue having words with Saturn, who will say “no” and “not yet” and, when we orient ourselves sufficiently responsibly, “yes.” Watch for the carousel of emotions that colored Easter/Passover weekend — weepiness, weariness, acceptance, relief, resolution, balm and back to vague sorrow — to cycle back through and tenderize the ground we’re cultivating.

Watered by emotions, with slow and steady nurturing, the plantings of this New Moon have the potential to grow into tangible support and satisfaction. It has an air of fatedness, of supposed-to-be, with the New Moon making a wide trine to the Virgo North Node of destiny.  That contact is a benediction of sorts for the 18-month journey through Virgo the node is wrapping up, and the coming flourishing is what we’ve been working toward.

And some of that could end up feeling like heaven on earth. With Venus in the waters of higher love, and their ruler Neptune offering assistance, divine or ecstatic experiences are certainly possible down here on terra firm.

That may take the form of a thunderclap moment (finding God in a sunset, say, or freshly picked berries). It might also pervade and elevate modest, ordinary aspects of life. You can invite that in, actually, if you consciously view matter as spiritual energy that has come down to this plane and taken on physical form. Even money and resources. Especially money and resources.

Which goes for your body as well. Treat it as your temple and by all means, stay in it. It’s the vehicle for exploring and experiencing the growth coming from the Taurus New Moon. As they used to say, “Here is where it’s at.”

Forecast for the 2017 Pisces New Moon Solar Eclipse

February 26, 2017
6:58 AM PST / 9:58 AM EST / 2:48 PM GMT
8 Pisces 12

Time for another growth spurt! This one’s been building for a couple of years, but it might still take you by surprise.

How are you at surfing? Or riding a wave? Not that you have much choice. And not that effort is required. A surge is coming, no matter what you do, with the force to carry you into the next 19 years.

The excitement is coming off the Pisces New Moon, which combines the cosmic whammy of a solar eclipse with an undercurrent of fire power. Even if it’s not hitting a point in your chart, it’s bound to be a watershed moment, pun fully intended.

The eclipse is finishing a cycle that’s been with us for two years, on the Virgo/Pisces axis. This cycle has had us revisiting, reevaluating and rebooting issues of boundaries vs. interconnectedness, logic vs. faith,  rationalization vs. compassion, and service vs. martyrdom.

We’re wrapping up and moving on from this process just as the next one is beginning, courtesy of the Leo/Aquarius eclipses, which began with the Leo Full Moon of February 10. The gear shift moves us from learning to remain intact while soaking in the sea of humanity, to the next challenge of shining brightly in the midst of a group.

The shift comes with shocks, jolts and goodbyes. A solar eclipse always closes something out and leaves something behind. This one stands to wash away situations, patterns and likely specific people.

Some departures could go unnoticed, or come with camouflage, unclear motive or subterfuge that takes months to be fully detected or appreciated. (Be on the lookout for sacrificial lambs.)

A sense of unreality is probable. (No! Not these days!) This could be gentle and lovely, as if the divine is at work, or maybe raw magic. It could also be disorienting, to the point of putting someone’s sanity in question.

Thank the New Moon’s host, Neptune, ruler of illusion, escapism, and transcendence. He’s not only in the thick of this party, but he’s also the first planet the Sun and the Moon will meet after they separate (the Moon six hours later, the Sun three days later, on March 1).

His close involvement amplifies the otherworldly, unhinged-from-normal-reality character of a Pisces eclipse. Surface appearances may have nothing to do with what is really happening.

Take heart, though. Since the event is a graduation exercise, we don’t have to fall prey to lower, delusional potentials. We’ve been dealing with and working on this area of life, and we can apply what we’ve learned to this final burst.

That means:  Know where the borders are between you and others. Safeguard your boundaries.(No codependency! Got that?) Use a connection to a higher force — faith, divine guidance, love — as the navigational tool for the waters, and for the likely fog (more likely, steam) that blankets them.

Trust is essential. There’s not much time to think. Likely you’re not going to see the biggest developments coming. Even if you do catch a glimpse, good luck doing anything about it.

We’re about to be transported by a massive energy surge (or several). Every solar eclipse brings an effect like hitting a power up in the old Nintendo Mario Cart game. In this instance, though, it’s more like you’re on a jet ski or powerboat. You’ll be traveling along and blam! The pace will quicken like crazy, and it’ll be all you can do to hang on for the ride.

You may feel as if a huge force is rising up within or under you and sweeping you along. This eclipse is turbo-charged with urgency, unpredictability, volatility, aggression, and passionate, nonrational impulses. With Neptune in the mix, you may not appreciate the power of those waters (or what’s in them with you) until you’re well underway.

That’s because this eclipse is powered by an intense and dynamic evolutionary surge (that word again!): a loose cardinal t-square linking the god of war and the cosmic rebel (Mars and Uranus), the lord of death and the underworld (Pluto) and the most expansive influence in the sky (Jupiter). This configuration plays out from February 22-27, as Mars squares Pluto, teams with Uranus, and then opposes Jupiter.

The configuration is raucous and energizing to the max. The combination promises to affect and reshape issues of home, family, tradition, nurturing and security, as the pressure rushes to find expression in the sign opposite Pluto, Cancer. (Political alert: Think immigration and borders have been hot issues? Just wait.)

The intensity peaks on the day of the New Moon, when Mars and Uranus meet. They’re unleashing the energetic equivalent of dynamite detonating, or a geyser erupting — sudden, explosive, violent, and propulsive; shattering and destroying as they shoot events forward and color the next six months as the eclipse plays out.

Resistance is futile. Situations will be changing in an instant, and time may feel like it’s speeding up like crazy. There’s no point in hanging on to any person or situation that slips away. Clutching may lead to something blowing up in your hand.

All you can do is ride with it — whether that means acting on motivation that’s igniting within you, or climbing on your surfboard and hollering, “Cowabunga!”

You’re up to this. You’ve been in training for the past two years, as the Virgo/Pisces eclipses have pushed you to simplify and reset your life, habits, and personal boundaries.  You are as prepared as is humanly possible.

There will be moments that take you by surprise. That take your breath away, that make your heart race, that make your head spin. That stun and probably sting. You may cry. You may swear angels are at work.

And you may feel exhilarated, lighter and freer than ever, and jubilantly, utterly alive.

You can do this.

When you land on stable ground a few months from now, look to see who’s made it to the same destination. And celebrate what you’ve done.

Forecast for the 2017 Leo Full Moon Lunar Eclipse

2017 Leo Full Moon Lunar Eclipse
February 10 – 11, 2017
4:32 PM PST / 7:32 PM EST / 12:32 AM GMT
22 Leo 28 / 22 Aquarius 28

This year’s Leo Full Moon has the subtlety of a powder keg igniting. It’s a pile-up of combustible influences that stoke the year’s theme of self-actualization. And like a powder keg’s igniting, it’s blowing some situations to smithereens — and blasting us further into this wild new phase.

Like any full moon, it’s bringing emotional outpourings to a head. They’re especially larger than life now, for multiple reasons.

One is the moon’s sign, Leo, which has a bent for drama and grabbing the spotlight. Feeling sufficiently seen, acknowledged and validated is a hot topic now. Some people are going to attack any perceived shortfall with attention-grabbing antics. Others, channeling the proud and regal possibilities of Leo, will respond by walking away from devaluing situations, with head held high.

Another reason for the larger than life emotions is this full moon’s nature as lunar eclipse, which escalates the looney factor exponentially. Lunar eclipse emotions aren’t merely aggrandized; they’re forceful, overwhelming and enormously informative (and so are the revelations that accompany them). What is seen cannot be unseen. Life will never be quite the same again.

This month’s full moon launches a two-year cycle of eclipses on the Leo/Aquarius axis, which has us revisiting and resetting the challenge of shining as individuals while coexisting within a group. A defining question is:  Who is your tribe? Here’s another: Where is your stage?

Watch for related themes, situations and even people to come back (perhaps only in your thoughts) from the summers of 1998 through 2000, the last time we underwent this eclipse cycle.
We are profoundly different now, though, so our responses to this cycle’s issues and triggers will be markedly different than they were some 19 years ago. Since then we’ve refocused our priorities, gained acute self-awareness and shed most inclination to contort ourselves to make a relationship “work.”

The first returns are coming this week, and continue as the eclipse unrolls over the next six months. Who sees your light? Who fuels it? Who doesn’t? There’s no point in running after anyone who leaves, or who fails to see you. Nor in continuing if you’re dancing your heart out in front of people who aren’t aware you’re in the room. Realizations are flipping internal switches in an instant, and permanently.

But wait!  There’s still more reason for the extraordinary uproar:  The Sun and the Moon are locking into the controlled firepower of the Saturn/Uranus trine, which ignited in December and fuels us for most of this year. Even if that trine did not activate anything in your chart (and in your heart), this Full Moon makes the potential immediate and personal.

Impulses are erupting from within, maybe from anger, maybe from passion, maybe from a raw life force that you can’t entirely define. You have got to have freedom to express yourself. Whether you’re seeing yet where you’re going, you are seeing what you’re leaving.

You have every incentive to get a move on. Action hero Mars, ruler of our drive and ambition, is ultimately in charge of this eclipse. (Here’s how:  the Moon in Leo answers to the Sun, which is in Aquarius and answers to Uranus, which is in Aries and therefore answers to Mars, which is in his home base of Aries.)

Mars doesn’t wait for permission, or for premeditated thought. A hot head and a risk taker, he simply acts. And that’s what we’re all doing.

The leaps and lunges, comings and goings, switches flipping and all the rest of the commotion stand to benefit us greatly. Bountiful Jupiter, bestower of optimism and expansiveness, is making helpful links to both the Sun and the Moon. Those contacts could further balloon some of this eclipse’s dramas to cartoonish proportions, but they could just as easily cushion the impact, or help us see why they’re ultimately good for us.

Many of them are. Revelations, partings of the way and split-second emotional decisions all carry profound healing potential. The Moon and Jupiter are making a yod, or Finger of God, that points directly to Chiron in Pisces, embodiment of our abiding, collective wound.  We are being called to address, even immerse ourselves into, interconnectedness.

The concept is seemingly incompatible with this moon mission. Tap into the elevated perspective of the Aquarius Sun and think of it this way:  On a micro level, it’s time to separate from the herd and venture forth in mutually appreciative networks. On a macro level, though, we’re in this together, various herds and all.

Forecast for the 2017 Aquarius New Moon

January 27-28, 2017
4:07 PM PST / 7:07 PM EST / 12:07 AM GMT
8 Aquarius 15

Who cares what the calendar says? Three weeks into the year, it finally feels like New Year’s. Not to mention like a new world.

That’s not just because the Aquarius New Moon launches the Chinese lunar year.  The sky is delivering the atmospheric gear shift that was missing when December 31 last gave way to January 1. We’re crawling out of the misty waters that have dominated life since then, drying off and turning our gaze forward.

The inherent detachment of the Aquarius New Moon promises to put those waters far behind — or rather, far below. It gives us the benefit of a bird’s eye view. The distance makes it easier to look at connections, networks and people without being so embroiled in dramas. We see more of the big picture and more of the future (at least, more of what’s possible in it).

Highly charged is an understatement for what lies ahead. One of the main reasons, and one of the year’s defining characteristics, reverberate in this New Moon:  the fiery collaboration between Saturn, lord of structure, and Uranus, agent of radical, unpredictable change, which are the  ancient and modern rulers of Aquarius.

They’ve backed off a bit from the unimpeded current that flowed between them in December, but they are still a team, coupling order and chaos, invigorating and igniting us. Their high-octane possibilities are beautifully synchronous with the Chinese Year of the Fire Rooster. Like an exuberant rooster crowing at the dawn, the Aquarius Moon’s rulers are an awakening, enlivening force that will not let us slumber this year (or lie still for long).

After years of upheaval and last year’s protracted daze, we have the motivation and the means to get going. The specific destination is not important at the moment; in fact, it may be impossible to discern just yet. The journey is the point, and its nature and purpose are self-actualization.

This New Moon is a gateway. It’s the lead in to the next eclipse cycle, which begins with the Leo Full Moon on February 11. The Leo/Aquarius eclipses will bring up issues of retaining individuality while existing within a group, with emphasis on how far and brightly your light shines.

For now, the focus is on individuality. Shake off those emotions, especially ones you soaked up from others. Wring yourself out. View your life as Mr. Spock. Put on your future vision. Embrace  the glorious, outrageous, unique you that is your core. And let it come out and play.

“The privilege of a lifetime is being who you are.” — Joseph Campbell

January 2017

January sets the tone for the year:  blasts of forceful, fiery action, passions and emotions, interspersed with pockets of contemplation, grace and renewal. Think of a cosmic hand feverishly working a cigarette lighter,  taking a periodic break, then returning to the lighter with renewed, relentless vigor.

The high energy of late December is still with us as the clock strikes midnight. Then foglights — or heartlights — lead into the year. The air of nostalgia, gentleness and moment outside of time are only a way station, as action hero Mars joins Neptune, lord of transcendence and illusion. (Since the sea is also his terrain, this meeting could foreshadow fighting for — or over — water as a theme of the year.)

Those qualities permeate relationships and the way we look at our fellow humans when love goddess Venus slides into Pisces herself on 3rd.  Compassion and empathy flow more freely; idealism, magic and romance are in the air. All these qualities infuse Venus’ desires and the marching orders she’s giving to her consort Mars, and carry on all month long.

The sparking begins when retrograde Mercury backs into Sagittarius on the 4th. Snarls, investigations and do-overs switch from plodding and practical to impulsive, high energy and political. Look for reasons to laugh; they abound.

The cosmic hand bears down on us from the 7th – 11th. Self-awareness heightens. Pressure mounts to break out of prisons (inner, family, relationship) and strip down to core personal truths.

While we’re morphing, pronounced touchiness is likely at the Cancer Full Moon on the 12th. Issues of emotional security and sustenance boil over and inspire search parties for Mommies and blankeys.  Spoilers: (1) They’re an inside job; (2) the optimal response to the pressures:   consolidating your own personal power.

rocess counts to mount till the 12th, when the winged messenger regains solid footing and practical orientation in Capricorn. That day brings the second of the month’s pockets of contemplation and renewal.

Coinciding with the Cancer Full Moon, this one carries a risk for squalling (see above), but also a wondrous oasis of escapism. It’s not only harmless, but absolutely what the doctor ordered:  a magical blend of earthly love and compassion (Venus) and  divine levels of the same (Neptune). Soak good and long. These waters are balm for heart and soul (not to mention catnip for certain star-blessed romances).

Also on Jan. 12:  my 2017 forecast, part of Astrology Hub’s online marathon! Sign up for free! Let 13 astrologers prep you for the year!

Then comes another push, as Mars engages law-and-order Saturn in a shoving match, on the 19th.  A steamy force emerges from the waters and demands accountability, responsible action, perhaps a sacrifice. Watch for issues of how well personal codes line up with spiritual guidance or the greater good. Shortfalls require corrective action.

Another pause arrives on the 25th, this one with profoundly curative properties benefitting desires, creativity, relationships and issues of worthiness. Venus, ruler of all we value, meets Chiron, the healer who gave up immortality to become fully human and overcome a wound that would not heal. They’re opening a font of gentleness, compassion, loving kindness and forgiveness, all of which can flow from you to yourself.

Just for this moment, it’s okay to be human. It’s easy to see commonality in fellow humans. It’s easy to view others through the eyes of God. Remember what you see and experience and sear the experience into your heart. They may slip off the radar as the year intensifies.

Venus has her own shoving match with Saturn on the 27th. The clock is ticking. Boundless love finds its limit. Connections feel the call for structure and commitment, or for pulling back. One approach is steamy, the other dampening. Both could lead to comparing and contrasting a particular connection (or relationships in general) with long-held attitudes and beliefs, and seeing which end has to give.

The calculus becomes more objective the next day at the Aquarius New Moon, on the 27th. In its detached, intellectual light, stepping aside a few inches comes easily. Take the breathing room. Take the elevated perspective. Take the future vision and drink in where you’re heading.

rocess counts to mount till the 12th, when the winged messenger regains solid footing and practical orientation in Capricorn.

While you’re still getting your bearings, the cosmic hand hits the lighter but good and inspired action follows. Bravado, gumption, derring-do, risks, aggression, anger, assaults, strikes, just plain getting up and getting going — all erupt and spread when warrior god Mars enters his home sign of Aries on the 28th.

His homecoming coincides with secrets emerging from behind the scenes, secrets that have been flirting with exposure since Mercury turned away from Pluto and went retrograde on December 19. The winged messenger meets the lord of the underworld at last on the 29th.

Disclosures are likely involving levels of power and money that evade most humans; the political and international news promises to be stunning. On the mere mortal level, watch for revelations and truths that clarify and simplify much (though perhaps with a sharp intake of breath).

Metaphoric breaking glass follows. With a chaser of high-octane activity in response.

Forecast for October 2016

“Overture, curtains, lights,
This is it, you’ll hit the heights,
And, oh, what heights we’ll hit,
On with the show, this is it.” – Bugs Bunny Show theme song

December brings a head-spinning mix of inevitability and unpredictability. Don’t expect it to go according to either tradition or plan. Keep your mind and schedule open, follow your instincts and you might actually have fun.  Having popcorn on hand might prove useful, too.

Been stuck? Waiting for motivation? Or the right opening? Not any more. Santa (or your holiday benefactor of choice) is delivering cases of Popeye’s spinach that unleashes startling, nigh-on superhuman action.

We’re being catapulted out of the upheaval of the past five years and into directions that upheaval made possible. Everything that has broken, cracked open, shifted and reshaped over the past five years has led to the events of this month.

The next stage of the adventure is here, and the skies are giving us a high-octane send-off. Saturn and Uranus, the lord of structure and the guy who blows structures up, are igniting the first of three booster rockets that define the trajectory of the next year. (Rounds two and three come in May and November.)

The inaugural launch has Jupiter in Libra amping up (trining) Saturn and triple-dog-daring Uranus (via an opposition), effectively throwing flame accelerant into the mix. Uranus is intensifying the launch with a dragging energy that comes from nearing the end of his retrograde. Blast-off happens on Christmas Eve. (Oh, goodie, right?) We’ll be feeling the build-up in the weeks before — and the backdraft well beyond.

Jump on this and ride. This blend of controlled planetary firepower is firming, grounding and stabilizing the dramatic, innovative, going-for-broke developments so many of us are being compelled to pursue. (If you’re not acquainted with the concept of self-actualization; read up on it; we’re in for an epidemic.)

The teamwork is also zapping established ways of thinking and doing — tilting them, electrifying them, blasting them apart. Loose cannon on a rampage is one aspect of this potential, as we’ve been seeing in the collective (okay, the political news). We’re in for a startling, unforeseeable, possibly previously unthinkable development or three, a fitting cap for a year that can be charitably described as weird.

Don’t panic! The disruptions can be fun, freeing and beneficial, too. Amid this volatility, traditions hold little sway. Consider yourself off the hook from anything that does not enhance your life or bring you joy. This is a holiday season to do whatever you darn well please. Make it up as you go along, even.

As tricky as this high-octane blend sounds, the skies are beaming down plenty of reason to get on board.  Links from action hero Mars to the firestarters have us raring to go as the month begins. While we’re ramping up, thoughts and communications keep us fixed on the concrete, practical and long-term, thanks to messenger god Mercury’s entry into Capricorn on the 2nd.

Venus gives relationships breathing room and a 20,000 feet-high perspective stretching far into the future, when she moves into Aquarius on the 7th.  The Sun steps into the dance when he collaborates with the outer planet trio in the second week, which also brings a boost in detachment (and scads of data) from the Gemini Full Moon.

From mid-month on, that mental focus on terra firma has us slowing, turning around, rethinking and flirting with do-overs. The impetus comes from the double whammy of Mercury stationing retrograde and Mars entering anything but straightforward Pisces on December 19right as the calendar is hurtling us into the thick of the holidays and year-end crunch.

With Mars out of forward, march mode, this Mercury retrograde presents more than its usual challenges, adding to the anything-can-happen (or be revealed, she says cryptically) vibe coming off Jupiter, Saturn and Uranus. Take ordinary retrograde precautions and then some. Approach communication as susceptible to the misleading, confusing and truthy. Make allowances for technology and traffic developing snarls and blips for reasons that are not always apparent. Rely on your inner GPS.

And work the double whammy to your benefit. At the very moment you feel your life escalating into excitement and adventure,  this planetary pair can draw attention to foundational matters and encourage soft, indirect action that flows around or permeates blocks. Do less, so you can do more. Reopen plans, goals, traditions for discussion (or simply back out). Play the backhand that comes so naturally to Mars in Pisces. Direct requests or demands are going to draw resistance and blow back. Try a little tenderness. Lure what you want.

This vibe permeates the solstice, which takes place on December 21, and reverberates throughout the winter season.

As weird, unfamiliar and potentially unsettling as these dynamics sound, the year’s final week holds the promise of sunniness and inner peace. Wherever that first booster rocket shoots us, the initial returns are positive. Happy hearts abound on Christmas Day, which sees Venus cavorting merrily with Jupiter, Saturn and Uranus.

The month and year end with clarity (the Sun conjuncting Mercury) and the concerted action and emotional goal-setting inspired by the Capricorn New Moon, on the 29th.  New horizons are calling that same day, as Uranus drops his drag and stations direct. Before heading out, take a dip in the grace and harmony between the Sun and dreamweaver Neptune. They add gentleness and nostalgia as the clock runs out on a most unusual year.

Forecast for November 2016

After months of disorientation, confusion and head-scratching, along come moments of “So that’s what this was about!” Then decisive, determined action capitalizing on the realizations.

Think of it as a Thanksgiving parade, all month long — only you’re not watching on the sidewalk or your couch, but marching into the fray, and at the end you’re not returning to your original spot. November calibrates our desires, shuts down the cosmic fog machine (at last!) and births developments with a long-term reach.

This story arc is not exactly apparent from the month’s first few days. Little is readily apparent, actually, that’s how unmoored the post-Halloween days (including election day in the US) are from what ordinarily passes for reality.

Gentle, otherworldly currents are delivering artistic inspiration, encounters with the departed, guidance from on high and sensations of connectedness to all of life. Monsters from the deep are in those waters as well, closer to the surface than normal. Visual and mental cues may mislead; navigate by radar. (Refer to my Scorpio New Moon forecast, which is still in effect.)

By the 5th, a thunderclap rouses hearts and desires; by the 7th, a path opens to a fierce desire, if you focus, banish fears and take the first, bold step to claiming.

Moving forward soon loses the careful, nose-to-grindstone, down-to-business plodding that colored October. Action hero Mars, who rules how we go after what we want, begins a month-plus in the futuristic, free-spirited intellectual mode of Aquarius on the 9th. Methodical progress gives way to innovative, individualistic approaches and flashes of genius. You’ve already set goals; now make up your way as you go along, pulling moves out of the blue now and again. (Tessering, anyone?)

The bottom line remains at the forefront, though, with Venus, ruler of all we value (love, money, creativity, previous baubles), moving from theoretical Sagittarius to eminently practical Capricorn on the 11th, where she’ll remain till December 6. With “Santa Baby” popping up early on internal playlists, watch for a calculating eye and preference for lasting value to overtake relationships and financial dealings.

Mercury picks up the fire baton from Venus the next day, the 12th, keeping gab and getting around energized and lively for the remainder of the month. There’s little chance of lagging once the Sun starts his annual tour of the sign, on the 21st.

The underlying practical streak gets a boost from the Taurus Full Moon on the 14th, which directs attention and emotions to issues of physical satisfaction, security and satiety. It’s a have-it-all event: Long-term security remains the goal, but we hunger for tangible, consumable reward in the here and now, as well.

Venus’ journey dominates the rest of the month. October sounded the cosmic alarm clock and set long-simmering developments into motion. November runs them by our heart and makes tweaks in both directions. As Venus contacts all of the outer planets, our desires, relationships, approach to money and ultimately value systems get softened, buffed, deepened, stretched and blown out.

The calibrating begins with a doorway to tender, kind, heaven-sent experience, as Venus reaches out to Neptune, ruler of higher love, on the 19th. That’s the very day he’s turning direct after a six month retrograde, which began in the middle of the weird, Hanged Man-like suspension of June’s mutable grand cross.

We’ve come down from the Hanged Man’s tree and have been on solid ground since September. Now the fog that blanketed that experience — and so much of the year — is finally burning off and we are getting a much clearer view of exactly where we are — and where we’re heading.

That clarity is up for honing as we roll toward Thanksgiving and cosmic change agents Uranus and Pluto come back into play. That holiday will be anything but the same old, same old. Jupiter is pumping up structural changes in traditions, families and other foundations, when he squares Pluto, agent of unavoidable, fundamental change on the 24th.

The difference in this year’s model is more than what’s on the menu. A change in location, in companions and above all in approach and significance are all in order, and they’re setting the imprint for celebration in years to come. The urge is insistent and irresistible to do what you want, what you really really want, with someone (singular or plural) you really really want to be with. Expect smaller, deliberately chosen gatherings, simplification and greater meaning.

The impact is far greater than a holiday celebration. A template is being installed for moving forward, as the two planets of money and desire, Venus and Pluto, meet on the 25th, with Jupiter egging Venus on in her quest for tangible, bankable reward and experience. “Aha!” moments and messages assist, when Mercury gets a zap or two from radical change agent Uranus on the 26th.

Stabilizing and order begin to take shape with the Sagittarius New Moon on the 9th. Commitment of no small significance is in the air. The rebooting you experienced with the Virgo solar eclipse in September plays a role; this New Moon carries an imperative to step up and move forward on it. Relationships are a major area of activity, since structure-loving Saturn is the New Moon’s guest of honor, and Juno, the marriage goddess, is his date.

Resistance and impediments stand little chance, with Venus demanding action from Uranus. The month ends with a clash between the Sun and Neptune with the power to dispel illusion, delusion and any lingering fog. The impact can also rain down tenderness, compassion and kindness toward yourself and others. Allow that downpour to wash over you and water the foundations of your desires. They’ve been a long time coming.
