Forecast for the 2016 Aquarius Full Moon

25 Leo 51 / 25 Aquarius 51

But let there be spaces in your togetherness and let the winds of the heavens dance between you. —  Khalil Gibran

When you emerge from an intense experience, it’s common to see your life through new eyes. That shake-up in perspective — and the changes it motivates — are the gift of this year’s Aquarius Full Moon.

Like any Full Moon, this one brings a culmination of feelings and developments that have been in process. Calling this round extreme is an understatement, thanks to the years (and lifetime(s)) of gunk warrior god Mars dredged up during his recent months in Scorpio.

We’re coming back from the brink, emotionally and, for some of us, physically, after the combination free-fall, deep sea dive and monster rally of June and July. Feelings, truths and realizations have surfaced that aren’t going back. They are your filter now.

Notice what looks different. Notice especially what feels different. You might be viewing your circumstances as a mess (as in, “who made this — ?”). Or wanting to rearrange specific parts, or throw them out the door. Or perceiving certain aspects as restrictions and railing against them, gasping for breathing room, even pushing to break free somehow. Or all of the above.

The urges will be hard to resist. The ruler of Aquarius, Uranus, is cooperating with both the Sun and Moon, stoking impulses for freedom and being your own person. Uranus is the cosmic rebel, agent of radical, unexpected change, and advocate for alternative viewpoints. It’s making the easy flow of a trine to the Sun, representing our intellect and rational side, and the opportunity aspect of a sextile to the Moon, representing our emotions.

A companion influence is also pumping the drive to push against walls — only this one has the built-in likelihood of hitting them. Mars, now fast and free in the fire of Sagittarius, is heading straight for Saturn, lord of order.

The approach could inspire feverishly arguing and pushing against limits, obstacles and rules. It could also feel like one foot is on the accelerator and the other on the brake — although, since Saturn is the traditional ruler of Aquarius, his preference for order and structure could well prevail. Optimally, the pair will collaborate in controlled, sustained effort, with Saturn tempering the colt-like, my-way-or-the-highway proclivities of Mars in Sagittarius.

The tricky part about all these possible expressions of Mars/Saturn is the utterly unclear road conditions in which they’re occurring. Haze, fog and tricks of the light are obscuring and distorting the road and everything in it.

Saturn, lord of form, is in a harsh aspect to Neptune, lord of everything that defies form (from illusion, delusion, and deception to transcendence, high level love and interconnectedness with all life). The upshot, for this Full Moon, is that we may be operating under false or misleading data. Objects in the mirror may not only be closer than they appear, but they also might not be as or what they appear.

This probability extends even to the nature of this Full Moon, which may or may not be an eclipse. (If it were, it would be the first in a cycle that gets fully underway in February 2017, lasting through January 2019.) It is listed as a penumbral lunar eclipse in some, but not all, tables of the month’s planetary positions. NASA representatives have told editors at The Mountain Astrologer the Full Moon does not qualify as an eclipse. (The Mountain Astrologer,  August-September 2016, p. 89.)

With Uranus at the center of the mix, the distinction may be moot. Radical change is upon us, whether from a lightning strike or the cosmic reboot of the sky going temporarily dark.

So this lunation may or may not be an eclipse. What people are telling you may or may not be true. Your own vision may or may not be skewed. (Though do note your first impressions, as you emerge from the torpor of June/July. First impressions are often right.)

No matter. Even if their triggers may or may not be real, or true, or as we perceive, emotions do not lie.

Friends, organizations and the beat of your unique drum figure prominently in many of the areas of focus, as well as the triggering events. You’re discovering how you really feel about some of them (or how they make you feel), and then acting on that awareness.

In some cases this means separating from a friend or a group or, more likely, embracing the realization that you have already separated. In other cases it means a sudden leap into the future — recognizing a shiny brass ring and grabbing it, spying an opening and diving through it, seeing a Bat signal in the sky and showing up with cape billowing. In your heart, at least, if not yet in your actions.

The Mars/Saturn presence in Sagittarius makes the theoretical surprisingly important now. Life philosophies matter in the here and now of the physical world. The personal is political; the political is personal. And how. Beliefs, willingness to learn vs. rigid attachment to dogma, concepts of integrity, attitudes about law, diversity, government, education or the media, community spirit vs. us against a  demonized them  — any of these are operating as personal sorting hats.

The clamor is loud in and outside our heads. We’re thinking, talking and lapping up sound bytes with a vengeance, thanks to Jupiter’s more-more-more coming online in the communication hub of Mercury.  With this confab taking place in Virgo, evaluation and analysis are on overdrive, with an eye toward improvement that can descend into finding fault simply because it can. The verbal chewfest can assist in cleaning up your own thinking, building healthier boundaries and distancing influences that could disrupt or infect. (Time for another social media purge?)

If a situation does not play well with your drumbeat (or, worse, knocks it out of rhythm), breaking away is easy now. (Perhaps effortless, even necessary; situations might simply snap apart). Friends, groups and dreams that are in alignment will not only feel more right, but also trigger — and deliver — epiphanies and developments that inspire, catalyze and propel.

Leaps forward have somber undertones, though. Friendships are serious business these days. (To Aquarius, they’re the stuff of religion). The connections that will stand by us and blossom require respect and commitment, to the union as well as to each person in it. Not to mention breathing room and each person being true to himself.  (Scroll up for the Khalil Gibran quote as a refresher.)

This Full Moon reaches far into the future as well. Call it an eclipse or not, it has a long shelf life, into the fall of 2017. Epiphanies, decisions, jailbreaks, breakthroughs and emotional outpourings now prepare the way for three explosive, upcoming links between the traditional and modern rulers of Aquarius, Saturn and Uranus. They meet in a trine in December, and again in May and November 2017.

All three stabilize, or at least put form to, the radical individuating end of the change imperative that’s come off the Uranus/Pluto square since 2012. (Think politics have been whackadoodle lately? Just wait.) The first two trines occur near the degree of this Full Moon. The third, in November, happens at the degree.

This Full Moon sets stage in fixed energy, creating the launching pad for the blast-offs to come. The coming trines, and the final one in particular, will then ignite in cardinal and mutable energy, propelling us further and further out of the rubble of upheaval and into … a destination that can’t be perceived with mortal eyes at present.

But your heart senses where. It’s calling now, and it won’t be ignored.

Forecast for August 2016: Shifting Sands

August is the bridge between the weird, unsteerable stasis and discomfort of the past two months and the paradox of stabilizing and reboot coming this fall. It’s a wobbly bridge, to be sure,  swaying and shifting like a trick floor in a funhouse. Still, the movement is ultimately productive, instead of just getting in the way, or annoying.

Hearts and minds are assimilating, adjusting and adapting, working over so much that’s surfaced and striving to process the developments into something that makes sense. The exercise largely succeeds. Just as a sensation of balance descends, though, our attention flies back over territory we thought we’d covered.

No worries. The exercise, like the rest of the month, is valuable prep for what lies ahead.

The first half of the month delivers the oomph to send us on our way. The journey begins with Mars, ruler of our drive and actions, entering boisterous Sagittarius and energizing the Leo New Moon on the 2nd.

He’s been trawling the murky depths of Scorpio since spring, dredging up weighty, uncomfortable and unpleasant business that’s refused to go back in the closet. His entry into Sagittarius has us making like colts breaking out of a corral in search of movement, maneuverability, adventure and free-range contact with the outdoors.

Bemoaning and tending to wounds and nasty situations are out. Putting philosophies into action (or fighting for/over them), cracking jokes and generally having a good time are in. Moods improve;  motivation returns; optimism mounts.

Marching orders come from the heart as well.  It zips through three distinct styles of desires and relating. For the first four days, they’re maximum Leo, vibrant, extravagant and attention-seeking. Sober sensibility takes over from the 5th through the 29th, when Venus cools down in pragmatic, improvement-oriented, boundary-focused Virgo.

The appeal of thinking and talking things over has a shelf-life, though, and then movement and follow through are in order. It’s through this clear-headed lens that she demands action from Mars on the 6th. (Minds are screaming, “Move it!” too.) By the 17th, itches will be scratched and appetites  will be pursued, when the goddess of earthly desire and money collaborates with her primal, feral, force-of-nature counterpart Pluto.

Objective assessment hits immediately, with the Aquarius Full Moon Lunar Eclipse on the 18th. A firm reality check follows. Mars has a law and order meeting on the 24th with Saturn, enforcer of rules. The ramifications of recent high-energy actions crystalize. Questions arise (and likely resolve) about responsibility and wisdom. Don’t be surprised if Venus’ orders have sent Mars down the path to structure and commitment. Don’t be surprised, either, if he trots back into the corral and shuts the gate after himself.

The aftermath kicks up cosmic fog and glitter, with equal potential for confusion, illusion and romance, when Mars squares Neptune on the 26th. Who cares about reality, for the moment? Venus joins boundless Jupiter in a super-conjunction (by degree and declination) on the 27th. Hearts are viewing the glass not only as half full, but also fillable, and requesting more, please. Lots.

A meeting of hearts and minds leads to sighs of relief all around, as Venus meets Mercury and goes home to Libra, aka Relationship Central, on the 29th (bringing the heart’s third mode of expression). She’s still glowing from her date two days earlier with Jupiter, who’s heading over in September for his first visit in 12 years. In advance of her house guest (and the emphasis and expansion he promises), social interactions relax into niceties, prettily crafted sentiments, and an awareness of the game of give and take.

On Jupiter’s end, there’s tidying up to be done before he leaves Virgo. Mercury stations retrograde in that sign on the 30th and will not go direct until September 22, after Jupiter has left for Libra. The messenger god’s backtracking provides the opportunity to go over not merely his recent weeks in Virgo, but also the months and developments since last October, when Jupiter began traveling the degrees of this retrograde.

Snafus, breakdowns and garbling that occur now point to areas that have room for improvement and would benefit from attention before Jupiter completes his clean-up tour of Virgo. Look at this time as a chance to pick up dropped threads, learn missed information and address confusion and misunderstandings that have spun off Jupiter’s hard aspects to Neptune and his cosmic fog machine. What comes in September and beyond will be ever so much more solid, if you do.

For pointers, read my guide How to Survive the 2016 Mercury Retrogrades.

Forecast for the 2016 Pisces New Moon Solar Eclipse

March 8-9, 2016
18 Pisces 55
5:54 PM PST / 8:54 PM EST / 1:54 AM GMT

This year’s Pisces New Moon is a game changing pivot point. No one is merely turning on the ball of the foot and moving ahead in any kind of neat and orderly fashion, though. We are being engulfed by a tidal wave. It’s carrying us to shores we can’t make out clearly and bringing certain people and situations along for the journey while washing others out to sea.

The monumental impact comes from this being the year’s first eclipse. It’s a solar, on the Virgo/Pisces axis, which brings issues of habits, health, service, boundaries and interconnectedness up for revisiting and rebooting. The current cycle is our first recurrence of eclipses from March 1997 through September 1998. Looking back to that time is useful, because themes and issues you are encountering now build on the experiences you had during those years.

We have reached the middle of the current cycle, which began with the Pisces New Moon solar eclipse on the first day of spring 2015 and continues until February 2017. Though solar eclipses always launch — or at least, facilitate — forward motion, they always come with endings and departures, as certain givens and factors leave the scene that don’t jibe with the forward thrust.

Think of it as a set change during a play:  The lights go out, the crew moves scenery in and out, cast members exit and enter, and the lights come up to reveal the next scene’s set up and characters.  In this scenario, though, the lights aren’t coming up to full with any speed. The playing out will occur over months. It’s possible the new parameters may not be entirely clear until fall.

Part of that comes from the potential this event has for overwhelm, particularly for people with the Sun or other major placements in mutable signs (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces). With bigger-is-better Jupiter challenging the New Moon and amplifying the North Node (the path of the future), tiny currents quickly escalate into tsunamis. This results in conversations going from present circumstances to platforms for all manner of ghosts and stories and memories and bubblings up from psyches and weird dreams. (Speaking of which, dreams are off the charts because of this. Write them down. A pattern could emerge that cracks a problem for you. Or provides the basis for a screenplay.)

Other people’s problems could also trigger tidal waves. Be on the lookout for energy vampires — or emotional Ninjas, as a friend delightfully put it — who suck you in, usually with how much they need you, then flood your borders and overwhelm your schedule, energy and sanity with their crises. You can’t fix an emotional black hole. You can either tumble into it and lose control of yourself, or reinforce your boundaries, or steer clear altogether. If you find yourself being consumed by someone else’s drama, pain, unsolvable problems, whatever, please hit the pause button. Remind yourself how many times you’ve heard/witnessed/tried to help all this before. Draw a magic circle around yourself and your precious, surprisingly finite energy. Banish anything that’s not yours from the circle. Then reinforce and safeguard it.

The water’s churning, the rolling waves, the pressures and the overwhelm are forcing awareness of and commitment to what is truly yours, especially in terms of what you believe. The New Moon and Jupiter are forming a t-square to Saturn in Sagittarius, a dynamic configuration with multiple effects just now. It’s accelerating and amplifying thoughts, talk and the noise level in general. It’s bombarding us with and drowning us in other people’s opinions, perspectives, prejudices, issues and agendas. (Take periodic breathers from the news and social media. Please.)

And when push comes to shove, when some huge force slams you against the clock and the limits of your energy, you will instinctively know, in an instant, what is most important to you and where you have to claim dominion. (Your inspirational image for this portion of the eclipse energies is the Emperor in the Tarot.) With your own emotional issues cresting and flowing out, your own journey surging into rough magic, you do not have the luxury of wasting time or resources. You are being called upon to take responsibility for what you believe, to bring your beliefs and how you live your life into alignment and to — get ready for a notion that is in alarming short practice — be one of the adults in the room. (Since order-loving Saturn in Sagittarius also represents the legal system, this dynamic is also forcing our political system to move from past ways into a new paradigm. Seen any of that in the news?)

Some of this will come easily; some will encourage thrashing and flailing and indulging in victimhood or martyrdom. Yawn. You’ve grown too much in recent years to allow yourself to regress for long. And fighting the waters only leads to futile grasping, gasping for breath and going under. Trying to make sense of them is about as pointless. A lot of what is surfacing or steering is anything but rational and explicable these days. A lot is just plain bonkers, actually. (Use the Moon card from the Tarot as a guiding image.) Ride the waves as much as you can. Or dive through them, like kids do at the shore.

Some of the departures will be surprising (and the goings, too), some emotional and some bittersweet. All bring, ultimately, relief, balm and healing. This effect is particularly great on pain that has been with you for so long that it is part of the fabric of your being. That comes from the New Moon’s honor guard: Chiron, bringer of healing and mastery of physical existence, and the South Node of the Moon, a mathematical point that represents the behavior we came in with or resort to under stress.

They are drenching us in awareness of our ancient and abiding wounds, as well as the pain of all humanity. The potential is here to soothe and even heal wounds of crippling enmeshment, taking the fall for others, abandonment and the illusion of isolation. (Soundtrack for this portion of the influences:  “You Are Not Alone” from the Stephen Sondheim musical “Into The Woods.”) The way of the future, and the wake of this eclipse, involves healthier, more intact boundaries, attitudes and habits

Embrace and work with this wild process. Actively toss items overboard, fearlessly and lovingly. Communication is already in a gentle, telepathic mode, with Mercury in Pisces and heading for a meeting with Neptune later this week. Venus, ruler of our sociability, will soon be in Pisces herself, making compassionate, tender, downplayed, if sometimes backhanded approaches absolutely organic. Endings don’t have to be nasty; they can be kind and sweet. And endings are all around, thanks to the Libra lunar eclipse coming in two weeks to slam many a relationship chapter shut.

As varied as the activity is now and will be through the fall, one constant runs through it all. Everything points to the way out of the turmoil of the past four years. Replacement foundations, supports and structures have been increasingly coming into view and taking shape. With exact links to the culprits, cosmic change agents Uranus and Pluto, this New Moon has the power to wash away more of the rubble and facilitate the new.

As befits a Moon ruled by the lord of illusion, pertinent navigational advice comes from a movie, “The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel.” As arecent widow named Evelyn Greenslade (played by Judi Dench) observes a few weeks into her first visit to India, “Initially you’re overwhelmed. But gradually you realize it’s like a wave. Resist, and you’ll be knocked over. Dive into it, and you’ll swim out the other side.”

Forecast for the 2-16 Virgo Full Moon

February 22, 2016
10:19 AM PST / 1:19 EST / 6:19 PM GMT
3 Virgo 33 / 3 Pisces 33

This year’s Virgo Full Moon encourages spring cleaning a month ahead of the usual schedule. And as with so many jobs, this one begins on the inside.

Our perception of our identity and personality is the starting point. Recent weeks have brought our thinking, priorities and goals into sharper focus. The rocket power of the Aquarius New Moon on February 8 has broken us out of situations, patterns and perspectives and lit a fire in our bellies. Now we’re moving into awareness of how we feel and seeing ourselves differently, too.

Our sense of self is blurring, softening and in some ways dissolving. This process comes from the Sun’s approach to Neptune, ruler of Pisces and all things transcendent and escapist. It will only escalate as the Sun moves across this influence, which is the most unhinged from worldly experience. For some of us, this means a not-yet-defined sense of needing some bigger purpose or more creative, spiritual or personally meaningful experience of ourselves. For others, it translates into confusion about who we are — or want to be — at this point.

It’s as if we’ve stepped out of the shower and are looking into a mirror that’s fogged over. This Moon is handing us a towel so we can wipe the fog away and see ourselves. The symbolic towel uses emotions to clear the fog, but not with the watery, gushy expression we usually associate with feelings. Virgo is the most analytical, evaluative Moon, running emotional experience through the mind and a perspective that’s bent on tidying up and improvement.

Adding to the logic-driven (or, at least, intellectual) nature of this process is the trend toward stabilizing, ordering and concretizing we’re currently undergoing in how and what we’re thinking, in our information flow and in how we communicate. Cosmic messenger Mercury, ruler of our minds as well as Virgo, is moving into a cooperative link with  Saturn, lord of structure. Concepts are taking shape and coming down to earth, along with both a big-picture perspective and awareness of ramifications, consequences and the imperative to take responsibility for our thoughts and words.

Who is that person in the mirror? Who is it now? (Not last year, or a few years ago, or when you were growing up.) How do you feel about what you see? Take note of the words you use to describe and define yourself. How do those make you feel? Form follows thought. Words have consequences — especially now, with Saturn and Neptune loosening and tightening a tension that gives words the power of magic spells. How could you describe yourself more positively, lovingly and compassionately? How could you upgrade your definitions? What if you were to define yourself more in terms of the dreams and creativity you’re bringing into being (i.e., where you’re going), instead of where you’ve been?

Two more lines of questions are particularly worthwhile. How do you feel about all that recently honed clarity, the changing and rearranging in goals, perspective and relationships, and the developments you’ve experienced so far this year? It is right and appropriate to think over your reactions to all this, to chew and analyze and process and then assimilate. What is your heart telling you (granted, in a Mr. Spock way)? Would you benefit from cleaning up your thinking? From consciously reviewing what you believe to be true about yourself, and updating that inner list?

And what of yourself are you showing to the rest of the world? All that recently honed clarity is affecting the face you present, perhaps more than you realize. Can you consciously help that process? Can you bring that face more in line with your new inner clarity? Is the face you are showing true to your beliefs? Is there room for improvement? (Virgo can always find something to tweak.)

Look outward to others, too. It may be time to clean up certain situations. Or clean them out. We’re making room. This is the only Virgo Full Moon we’ll have (for 12 years) with expansive, beneficent Jupiter in the sign. He’s currently amplifying the road sign to the future (the North Node of the Moon) and making it increasingly hard to miss. He’s coaxing our vision from where we’ve been and turning it toward where we’re going, collectively and individually.

Set your own stamp on that path. Make time, amid the analyzing and tidying, for bundling all the symbolism of this forecast into some magic work. (Neptune is the planet of magic, after all.) Look into a mirror — a physical one — and say out loud who you are and who you are becoming. Play make believe, too. An Abraham game would be appropriate: finishing the phrase, “Wouldn’t it be fun if?”

Choose your words with care. You’re casting a spell on yourself. Heed the Virgo Moon. She’ll give you a healthy script.

Forecast for the 2016 Aquarius New Moon: Awakening to Action

February 8, 2016
6:38 AM PST / 9:38 AM EST / 2:38 PM GMT
19 Aquarius 15

The Aquarius New Moon motivates us with the subtlety of a lightning strike. Recent weeks have radically, permanently altered our perspective on much that is fundamental to our existence, including, and most especially, ourselves. This Moon awakens us into just how much we’ve morphed. It carries incentive — in fact, a mandate — to act on that awakening, suddenly, brazenly, unapologetically. It’s shifting change into higher gear, from internal to external, from subconscious to intentional, and from “Nope!” to “Yes, please!”

Though the timing may be sudden or unexpected, this action has been a long time coming. It’s erupting out of the rubble of the past four years, on ground that has been worked over by Uranus, agent of unpredictable change and the Aquarian Moon’s ruler, and Pluto, agent of unavoidable change.  Structures, goals, relationships, foundations and more have collapsed or shape-shifted drastically, and are still in the early stages of replacement or reconstruction. Both of the cosmic change agents play a role in speeding that process along with this New Moon.

Opportunity is rampant for extricating our individual selves from both the rubble and any lingering constraints that are inconsistent with our newly honed perspective. These openings come from a cooperative link between Uranus and the New Moon, which invites you to see and be yourself more clearly. (Think of it as sharpening your personal Bat signal, so that the people looking for it will recognize you.) Breakage is part of the picture, and so, probably, is leaping into an action that you might not take if you thought about it much. Permanent damage is not likely, though, at least not to you. Besides, what is set into motion now has a air of inevitability to it. Stabilizing Saturn is moving toward an easy flow with Uranus, which will be exact by the end of the year.  Current break-outs and breakthroughs are the first stages of a process that will only build and ultimately accelerate.

Pluto has a helper at this party, too, adding to the inevitable and life-changing nature of this New Moon. The cosmic shove (or boot) in the backside comes from Mars, the planet of action, churning the deep, dark waters of Scorpio. Since they are Pluto’s home base and Mars is their traditional ruler, this shove is far more than a playful suggestion. Intense, non-rational impulses and issues are at work, of will, power, stakes, fate, money, trust, reciprocity, mortality and compulsive desires.

Even though Aquarius is an intellectual sign, cellular-level desire pulses through this New Moon, which is vibrating from the union of Mars’ lady love, Venus, and Pluto on the 5th. We’ve tasted something we do not want to live without.  Primal forces are stirring that override reason and steer the action. We’re in the throes of the sort of feral instinct that throws lovers in bed, whatever the cost, or causes a wolf to bite off its paw to get free from a trap. Cue “Moonstruck.” Or, for a less violent inspirational image, the “Amok Time” episode of Star Trek, in which Vulcan mating rituals turn Spock animalistic.

To some degree, we’ll all be running amok. The huge, nigh on unstoppable energy feels like the aftermath of a long period of hibernation, when every fiber of your being is screaming to come back to life. The surge is larger than a mere moon phase, but more like a new page on the calendar, like New Year’s or spring. Not surprisingly, this New Moon has links to both.

It marks the start of the Chinese Year of the Fire Monkey, a lively, unpredictable force of nature that is appropriate for this Moon’s ruler, uncontainable Uranus in the fire sign of Aries. The vitality is so palpable it will likely hit you whether you celebrate the holiday or not. The force may feel at times like kundalini awakening and rising, much like a seed bursting from its shell and sprouting through the ground in spring. Chalk this up to the many aspects amping up the fire of Uranus (sextile to the New Moon, inconjunct from Mars, trine from Saturn), in the middle of  the sign of spring.

A lot is going on, and it sets the story arc of the year. True, this Moon could have some messiness and complications. They’re transitory. The gifts far outweigh an uncomfortable conversation or two. It’s an exciting, exhilarating turning point, yanking us out of stuck places, shattering armor and chains (largely in our thinking), sending us running toward what we want (instead of away from what we don’t want) and challenging us to live our own lives, please. That doesn’t necessarily mean, alone. Deepening intimacy is in the mix for many of us. Being yourself is key.

Forecast for February 2016

February has the feel of a sped-up movie montage that takes characters through years in the span of seconds. Our hearts and relationships are in for a quite a journey. Throw your arms into the air and remind yourself to enjoy the ride, because spoilers: No matter what happens along the way,  the ending scenes hold the potential for sweetness and stability.

The month starts slowly, but intensely. It’s as if we’re coming out of hibernation, and primal urges are coming to as well that hunger for attention and feeding. They’re rumbling out of the subconscious and our very cells and taking the steering wheel from our conscious minds.

We’re not inclined to resist. After last month’s retrograde took Mercury back and forth across Pluto’s clarifying scythe, we’re viewing life and ourselves drastically differently. We recognize these urges and what they are calling us to do. And besides, they’re on now-familiar turf: areas of life that have been in flux for several years, where we are in the early stages of building into new and improved structures.

So we’re likely to be adults and cooperate. Clean out the basement. Push structural work along.  Desires and, in some cases, relationships will only take on more defined contours, perhaps from constraints, perhaps from an awareness of the need to act responsibly.

Still, caution can go only so far before it heads out the window. Those primal urges are in control by the first weekend, trysting time for the two rulers of desire and money, Venus (earthly level) and Pluto (beyond mortal control.)  This is not a sweet Valentine’s prelude; it’s a gotta-have-it-or-die vibe, hot, heavy and life-changing. “It” doesn’t necessarily mean possession or consummation; it can just as easily mean an argument or ending. Except there’s little easy about this. Messy is more like it. Passions flare. Relationships shape shift ferociously and permanently. Everything has longterm consequences, because Venus and Pluto are dancing across the new and improved infrastructure that’s been taking shape for you. Adding to the finality, the goddess of love demands an act of liberating rebellion from radical change agent Uranus on her way off the dance floor. Something’s gotta give; something’s gotta break.

There’s no time to clean up the wreckage before the Aquarius New Moon fully awakens us on February 8. Its explosive, invigorating force feels like the year has started at last. (No coincidence, it launches the Chinese Year of the Fire Monkey.) It motivates us to fierce, scary, exhilarating action (those urges again). In its aftermath, desires expand even more (as if that were possible, but yes), take form and deepen (ditto).

And then, poof! Communications and interactions lighten up and shift into observer mode, as Mercury and then Venus move into Aquarius (on Feb. 13 and 16).  We can be with each other without clutching, and stand back enough to gain objective perspective. Valentine’s Day feels like a relief after the previous weekend; pressure off, people talking sanely. The Sun’s entry into Pisces adds gentle notes, on the 19th.

The time, space and inclination to clean up — remember the wreckage? — arrives with the Virgo Full Moon on the 22nd. No matter what the weather is doing outside, we’re feeling a spring cleaning urge within. In the days following, tidying up is likely to carry over into your thinking and communications. We’re enjoying an internal cohesiveness that makes it easy to identify, convey and go after what we want.

The end of the month brings door-opening information and a happy paradox. Transcendence is on the house for everyone, whether that means a religious experience, feeling at one with all of creation, falling in love with love, ourselves, or a special someone, or otherwise escaping the gravitational pull of earthly reality. That coincides with an offer to bring form and stability to a heart’s desire. Which, come to think of it, may not create a paradox at all, but more of a chicken-or-the-egg scenario. Either way, you’re likely to be smiling as the month’s movie montage ends.
