2017 Capricorn Full Moon

17 Cancer 09 / 17 Capricorn 09

What’s that emerging from the deep? Monsters? Or treasures? Or both? Whichever, they’re huge, primal and laying it all on the emotional bottom line. We’ll be evaluating them (and those questions) under the cold, calculating light of the Capricorn Full Moon.

Well, maybe not as cold as usual, except for patches of frozen rage. And even that may be morphing into something much hotter.

Intense. Uncomfortable. Clarifying. Life-changing.

Forecast for the 2017 Cancer Full Moon

January 12, 2017
3:34 AM PST / 6:34 AM EST / 11:34 AM GMT
22 Cancer 27 / 22 Capricorn 27

How’re your food cravings these days? Your moods? Staying close to home? Tearing up at ads? Missing your Mommy? It’s all part of the cellular pull of the Cancer Full Moon. If only the rest of the sky would let us crawl under a blankie and enjoy.

A full moon always brings emotions and nonrational impulses to a crest, and none so much as when she is in her natural sign of Cancer. Have you ever gone back home or visited relatives and found old childhood needs, behaviors and dynamics resurfacing? A similarly automatic regressing happens under a Cancer Full Moon.

It stirs issues of home, tradition, comfort and nurturing, in the context of long-term goals and security, and responsibility and dependability. Throws in heaps of shoulds and guilt. And poses the ever-changing questions of who’s the mommy, who’s the daddy, and who gets to be the baby.

No wonder folks are hypersensitive. What we want is something — a hug, a doughnut, a soft stuffed animal — to make us feel safe and secure.

Unfortunately, plenty out there in the world is making us feel anything but that. A lot of people aren’t getting with the program…though, surprisingly, a lot are. Just not consistently who you might have expected.

We’re feeling a monumental evolutionary surge. The Sun has just passed the clarifying, simplifying scythe of Pluto, agent of unavoidable change. He remains close enough for our consciousness to tingle with awareness of our newly honed sense of self.

We can’t go back to how we used to be.  Relationships, alliances and agreements are now playing catch-up in response. They’re bearing the brunt of the unavoidable undercurrents and stresses accompanying this Full Moon.

Part of the tension comes from boundless Jupiter being in Libra, aka Relationship Central, exactly in between the Sun and the Moon. Reason and emotion are bearing down equally on him, demanding awareness, expression and action.

All three participants, the Sun, Moon and Jupiter (forming the dynamic configuration of a tight t-square), are getting riled up non-stop. Agitation, disruption and seemingly unresolvable conflict are in the mix. Perhaps you’ve noticed?

They come from the fiery, uncontrollable duo that has been inflaming the core wound of our nation’s psyche: volatile, unpredictable Uranus, advocate for rebellion, liberation and alternate perspectives, and his current traveling companion Eris, goddess of discord. Lovely couple, right?  Just who you want to have in your home. Where they’ve taken up residence for the foreseeable future.

They’re opposite Jupiter, upping the noise level and making it hard to find common ground or points of compromise. They’re arguing for breaking off on your own, in some cases through other people acting hell bent on stirring up trouble. They aren’t inclined to shut up, either.

Hence the extremes in emotional waters — some turbulent enough to warrant dramamine, some as soothing and nourishing as amniotic fluid. This year’s Cancer Full Moon is showing, more than the usual, who and what feels safe, and who and what decidedly does not.

Based on that status report, the concept of family, so sacred to Cancer, may well be up for redefinition. This goes for legal and blood family as well as chosen and tribal connections.

Relatives are the first front. They’re center stage now, whether they’re in your life (and face) at the moment or popping up energetically. You might be finding certain dramas extending past the holidays, or be experiencing your emotional reactions to them only now.

More than in the past, lines of demarcation have a lot to do with politics, world view and value systems. Thank Saturn, lord of order, rules, the patriarchy and the status quo and, of course, the Capricorn Sun. He’s in the sign of Sagittarius, where approaches to and philosophies of life can become fiery and judgmental.  He’s cooperating with Jupiter in Libra, while fueling those rabblerousers Uranus and Eris.

That teamwork is adding to the condescending, patronizing, self-righteous and condemning blasts so many of us are receiving and observing (but not sending out, right?), and the widening of gulfs that feel less and less bridgeable.

Discord is running rampart, straight into the heart of families. With so little room for peacemaking, compromise or reconciliation — for the moment, at least — ties of blood and shared memories are losing their hold. Instead, this Cancer Full Moon is awakening appreciation of trusted family, chosen family, safe havens and realigned tribes.

It’s also steeling your backbone to stop looking for safety and nurturing from people who are showing so clearly that they are unwilling or incapable of giving it.  And to stop feeling responsible for people, no matter what their legal relationship to you may be, who don’t want, need or appreciate your efforts to care for them.

The good news:  What’s safe and supportive has staying power. We’ve got the motivation to embrace and protect it. Saturn is conjunct Juno, queen of the gods and protector of marriage.  They’re encouraging deals, alliances, serious relationships and legal marriages, complete with license and rings. (Cue Beyonce.)

The bottom line, so dear to Capricorn?  What makes you feel safe and secure is up to you. This Full Moon promises to show you what that means and inspire you to cherish and protect it. And maybe deliver an updated answer to the eternal questions of who’s the mommy, who’s the daddy and who gets to be the baby. (Hint: Could be you.)

Forecast for October 2016

“Overture, curtains, lights,
This is it, you’ll hit the heights,
And, oh, what heights we’ll hit,
On with the show, this is it.” – Bugs Bunny Show theme song

December brings a head-spinning mix of inevitability and unpredictability. Don’t expect it to go according to either tradition or plan. Keep your mind and schedule open, follow your instincts and you might actually have fun.  Having popcorn on hand might prove useful, too.

Been stuck? Waiting for motivation? Or the right opening? Not any more. Santa (or your holiday benefactor of choice) is delivering cases of Popeye’s spinach that unleashes startling, nigh-on superhuman action.

We’re being catapulted out of the upheaval of the past five years and into directions that upheaval made possible. Everything that has broken, cracked open, shifted and reshaped over the past five years has led to the events of this month.

The next stage of the adventure is here, and the skies are giving us a high-octane send-off. Saturn and Uranus, the lord of structure and the guy who blows structures up, are igniting the first of three booster rockets that define the trajectory of the next year. (Rounds two and three come in May and November.)

The inaugural launch has Jupiter in Libra amping up (trining) Saturn and triple-dog-daring Uranus (via an opposition), effectively throwing flame accelerant into the mix. Uranus is intensifying the launch with a dragging energy that comes from nearing the end of his retrograde. Blast-off happens on Christmas Eve. (Oh, goodie, right?) We’ll be feeling the build-up in the weeks before — and the backdraft well beyond.

Jump on this and ride. This blend of controlled planetary firepower is firming, grounding and stabilizing the dramatic, innovative, going-for-broke developments so many of us are being compelled to pursue. (If you’re not acquainted with the concept of self-actualization; read up on it; we’re in for an epidemic.)

The teamwork is also zapping established ways of thinking and doing — tilting them, electrifying them, blasting them apart. Loose cannon on a rampage is one aspect of this potential, as we’ve been seeing in the collective (okay, the political news). We’re in for a startling, unforeseeable, possibly previously unthinkable development or three, a fitting cap for a year that can be charitably described as weird.

Don’t panic! The disruptions can be fun, freeing and beneficial, too. Amid this volatility, traditions hold little sway. Consider yourself off the hook from anything that does not enhance your life or bring you joy. This is a holiday season to do whatever you darn well please. Make it up as you go along, even.

As tricky as this high-octane blend sounds, the skies are beaming down plenty of reason to get on board.  Links from action hero Mars to the firestarters have us raring to go as the month begins. While we’re ramping up, thoughts and communications keep us fixed on the concrete, practical and long-term, thanks to messenger god Mercury’s entry into Capricorn on the 2nd.

Venus gives relationships breathing room and a 20,000 feet-high perspective stretching far into the future, when she moves into Aquarius on the 7th.  The Sun steps into the dance when he collaborates with the outer planet trio in the second week, which also brings a boost in detachment (and scads of data) from the Gemini Full Moon.

From mid-month on, that mental focus on terra firma has us slowing, turning around, rethinking and flirting with do-overs. The impetus comes from the double whammy of Mercury stationing retrograde and Mars entering anything but straightforward Pisces on December 19right as the calendar is hurtling us into the thick of the holidays and year-end crunch.

With Mars out of forward, march mode, this Mercury retrograde presents more than its usual challenges, adding to the anything-can-happen (or be revealed, she says cryptically) vibe coming off Jupiter, Saturn and Uranus. Take ordinary retrograde precautions and then some. Approach communication as susceptible to the misleading, confusing and truthy. Make allowances for technology and traffic developing snarls and blips for reasons that are not always apparent. Rely on your inner GPS.

And work the double whammy to your benefit. At the very moment you feel your life escalating into excitement and adventure,  this planetary pair can draw attention to foundational matters and encourage soft, indirect action that flows around or permeates blocks. Do less, so you can do more. Reopen plans, goals, traditions for discussion (or simply back out). Play the backhand that comes so naturally to Mars in Pisces. Direct requests or demands are going to draw resistance and blow back. Try a little tenderness. Lure what you want.

This vibe permeates the solstice, which takes place on December 21, and reverberates throughout the winter season.

As weird, unfamiliar and potentially unsettling as these dynamics sound, the year’s final week holds the promise of sunniness and inner peace. Wherever that first booster rocket shoots us, the initial returns are positive. Happy hearts abound on Christmas Day, which sees Venus cavorting merrily with Jupiter, Saturn and Uranus.

The month and year end with clarity (the Sun conjuncting Mercury) and the concerted action and emotional goal-setting inspired by the Capricorn New Moon, on the 29th.  New horizons are calling that same day, as Uranus drops his drag and stations direct. Before heading out, take a dip in the grace and harmony between the Sun and dreamweaver Neptune. They add gentleness and nostalgia as the clock runs out on a most unusual year.

Forecast for November 2016

After months of disorientation, confusion and head-scratching, along come moments of “So that’s what this was about!” Then decisive, determined action capitalizing on the realizations.

Think of it as a Thanksgiving parade, all month long — only you’re not watching on the sidewalk or your couch, but marching into the fray, and at the end you’re not returning to your original spot. November calibrates our desires, shuts down the cosmic fog machine (at last!) and births developments with a long-term reach.

This story arc is not exactly apparent from the month’s first few days. Little is readily apparent, actually, that’s how unmoored the post-Halloween days (including election day in the US) are from what ordinarily passes for reality.

Gentle, otherworldly currents are delivering artistic inspiration, encounters with the departed, guidance from on high and sensations of connectedness to all of life. Monsters from the deep are in those waters as well, closer to the surface than normal. Visual and mental cues may mislead; navigate by radar. (Refer to my Scorpio New Moon forecast, which is still in effect.)

By the 5th, a thunderclap rouses hearts and desires; by the 7th, a path opens to a fierce desire, if you focus, banish fears and take the first, bold step to claiming.

Moving forward soon loses the careful, nose-to-grindstone, down-to-business plodding that colored October. Action hero Mars, who rules how we go after what we want, begins a month-plus in the futuristic, free-spirited intellectual mode of Aquarius on the 9th. Methodical progress gives way to innovative, individualistic approaches and flashes of genius. You’ve already set goals; now make up your way as you go along, pulling moves out of the blue now and again. (Tessering, anyone?)

The bottom line remains at the forefront, though, with Venus, ruler of all we value (love, money, creativity, previous baubles), moving from theoretical Sagittarius to eminently practical Capricorn on the 11th, where she’ll remain till December 6. With “Santa Baby” popping up early on internal playlists, watch for a calculating eye and preference for lasting value to overtake relationships and financial dealings.

Mercury picks up the fire baton from Venus the next day, the 12th, keeping gab and getting around energized and lively for the remainder of the month. There’s little chance of lagging once the Sun starts his annual tour of the sign, on the 21st.

The underlying practical streak gets a boost from the Taurus Full Moon on the 14th, which directs attention and emotions to issues of physical satisfaction, security and satiety. It’s a have-it-all event: Long-term security remains the goal, but we hunger for tangible, consumable reward in the here and now, as well.

Venus’ journey dominates the rest of the month. October sounded the cosmic alarm clock and set long-simmering developments into motion. November runs them by our heart and makes tweaks in both directions. As Venus contacts all of the outer planets, our desires, relationships, approach to money and ultimately value systems get softened, buffed, deepened, stretched and blown out.

The calibrating begins with a doorway to tender, kind, heaven-sent experience, as Venus reaches out to Neptune, ruler of higher love, on the 19th. That’s the very day he’s turning direct after a six month retrograde, which began in the middle of the weird, Hanged Man-like suspension of June’s mutable grand cross.

We’ve come down from the Hanged Man’s tree and have been on solid ground since September. Now the fog that blanketed that experience — and so much of the year — is finally burning off and we are getting a much clearer view of exactly where we are — and where we’re heading.

That clarity is up for honing as we roll toward Thanksgiving and cosmic change agents Uranus and Pluto come back into play. That holiday will be anything but the same old, same old. Jupiter is pumping up structural changes in traditions, families and other foundations, when he squares Pluto, agent of unavoidable, fundamental change on the 24th.

The difference in this year’s model is more than what’s on the menu. A change in location, in companions and above all in approach and significance are all in order, and they’re setting the imprint for celebration in years to come. The urge is insistent and irresistible to do what you want, what you really really want, with someone (singular or plural) you really really want to be with. Expect smaller, deliberately chosen gatherings, simplification and greater meaning.

The impact is far greater than a holiday celebration. A template is being installed for moving forward, as the two planets of money and desire, Venus and Pluto, meet on the 25th, with Jupiter egging Venus on in her quest for tangible, bankable reward and experience. “Aha!” moments and messages assist, when Mercury gets a zap or two from radical change agent Uranus on the 26th.

Stabilizing and order begin to take shape with the Sagittarius New Moon on the 9th. Commitment of no small significance is in the air. The rebooting you experienced with the Virgo solar eclipse in September plays a role; this New Moon carries an imperative to step up and move forward on it. Relationships are a major area of activity, since structure-loving Saturn is the New Moon’s guest of honor, and Juno, the marriage goddess, is his date.

Resistance and impediments stand little chance, with Venus demanding action from Uranus. The month ends with a clash between the Sun and Neptune with the power to dispel illusion, delusion and any lingering fog. The impact can also rain down tenderness, compassion and kindness toward yourself and others. Allow that downpour to wash over you and water the foundations of your desires. They’ve been a long time coming.

Forecast for the 2016 Aries Full Moon

October 15 – 16, 2016
9:23 PM PDT /12:23 AM EDT / 4:23 AM GMT
23 Aries 14 / 23 Libra 14

The cosmic alarm clock is going off, but don’t bother reaching for the snooze button. There isn’t one. Not that anyone could sleep through the racket.

It’s coming off this year’s supercharged Aries Full Moon and its powder keg of emotional explosions, epiphanies, breakthroughs and jailbreaks. They are blasting us out of complacency and stuck places. Pushing fence sitters to jump to the ground and get going already. Detonating hair-trigger impulses venting pressure that’s been building for months, even years.

It’s all a cathartic antidote to the surreal atmosphere and whiplash-inducing reboots we’ve experienced this year. No more daze, shock, questioning sanity, feeling stalled, licking wounds or dissolving in tears. Raw, primal energy is being unleashed — life force, kundalini, courage, rage — that ignores (or thrives on) danger.

If you’ve been waiting for the nerve to pull off a risk, or make a move that’s given you pause, you now have at your disposal all the incentive, gumption and rocket fuel you could ever want. You are, in effect, packing heat. The complication is, so is everyone else.

The emotional harvest of this Moon is erupting both within us and all around us. Loose cannons and wild cards are everywhere. Ever heard of the phenomenon spontaneous human combustion? You may well see it. You may well experience it.

Little is neat, tidy or subtle. Even action you’ve been considering comes with surprises, leaping out on a schedule you didn’t contemplate, igniting with unexpected force, catapulting you into unforeseen — and probably unforeseeable — circumstances.

The volatility, unpredictability and chaos stem from the Moon’s tighter than tight company with Uranus, agent of radical change, and Eris, the goddess of discord. The Libra Sun may prefer playing nice with others, but that’s outweighed by these rabble rousers inflaming the individual end of the relationship axis represented by the Aries Moon.

Think you’ve already hit the point of “enough is enough?” Think again. With Uranus and Eris stoking this hothead, fearless Moon, there’s little chance of backsliding into dynamics of putting up with, tolerating or settling. The combined impact is making Humpty Dumpty out of out-of-balance arrangements, as well as any lingering inclination to remake yourself to fit someone’s expectations — or your projections, assumptions or beliefs of what someone expects or needs.

The Moon and her rough and rowdy companions are blowing up resistance, impediments and other forms of prisons, internal and circumstantial. The effect is catalytic, radically liberating as well as empowering, challenging us to step up and take charge of ourselves.

It’s time. We feel it, too. This Full Moon is a palpable milestone in the process of foundational upheaval, change and restructuring we’ve been undergoing for some four years, courtesy of the ongoing squabble between Uranus and Pluto.

The Aries Moon’s ruler, Mars, is heading for a conjunction with Pluto, ruler of the unavoidable end of the ongoing change imperative. Their meeting promises targeted, step-by-step, practical, mundane, concrete effort toward long-term goals — including that foundational restructuring we’ve been undergoing.

These two bodies are the traditional and modern ruler of Scorpio, the sign currently being visited by the ruler of the Libra Sun, Venus, goddess of all we hold dear (love, money, creativity, precious baubles, etc.). All the epiphanies and jailbreaks, all the apple carts being upended, all the glorious conflagration of this Full Moon, all are freeing us, hearts, energy and resources and all, for incremental progress on those long-term goals and revamped structures — including the relationships that are going along with us.

It’s time to get moving. It’s time to be bold. It’s time to just do it, whatever “it” we may have been pondering.

Postponing is unlikely, what with the cosmic alarm clock blaring for most of the rest of the month. Mars continues carrying out the cosmic change imperative by challenging Uranus, in an action-demanding square that peaks on the 28th and moves us further onto and into updated structures.

The Full Moon and the fortnight following it involve a concept that will dominate next year:  self-actualization. This Moon is priming our engines for a three-stage blast-off into that, and more, when order-loving Saturn trines radical Uranus, from the coming holiday season through November of next year.

That blast-off is part of the point of the last few years’ upheaval. This Moon frees and preps us for the journey.

Forecast for October 2016

Kiss the doldrums goodbye (and good riddance)!  October is a happening month.

Clouds are parting. A path is opening. Cosmic hands are shoving us onto it. And by the end of the month, we’re taking that path seriously indeed. And possibly a certain person, too.

Progress rolls out in two distinct phases, with the turning point falling neatly on the 15th. The first half moves us out of personal detail-driven clean-up and reboot and into expansiveness and taking others more into account. Perhaps with a touch of kicking and screaming; perhaps that’s mostly at ourselves.

The second half is a wild ride of awakening, adventuring, refocusing and, ultimately, stability. It starts with a galvanizing bang that slams us back into ourselves, and how. Intense conversations, impulses and events follow that strip priorities down to essentials. After that, we’re taking devil-may-care risks and hearts’ desires get real.

Both phases come with a low but constant rumble. Identifying it may be beyond your abilities (though at times you’ll swear you’re hearing the “Jaws” theme). Scorpio is prominent in the sky — the sign hosts Venus in the first half, the Sun starting the 22nd, Mercury on the 24th, the New Moon on the 30th). The veil is thin; the atmosphere teems with mystery, intrigue and a hint of danger.

Think of that rumbling as a reminder to make the most of your time on this side of the divide. Be present and live, here and now, deeply and unwaveringly. The low-level noise is nagging you to push yourself, to confront yourself, to speak up, to not waste time and energy on fluff but instead immerse yourself in profound meaning.

October also brings an easing and, for a bit, speeding up, in the flow of information and getting around. After hunkering down in Virgo for a couple of months, cosmic messenger Mercury cycles through three distinct modes in this one month.

With him still in Virgo until the 7th, the occasional detail will continue to trip us and call for clean-up, the last gasp of Mercury’s recent retrograde. When he takes off into Libra’s airiness on the 7th, the pace speeds up. Thoughts, words and messages take on gracefulness, social niceties and awareness of others. Talking things out, even negotiating, is in style. With the sign’s ruler, Venus, herself in Scorpio through the 18th, what’s being conveyed has an inherent honesty and power that shines through any pretty words that Libra may paint.

Before he dons his third guise, the Aries Full Moon on the 15th blasts us out of complacency and confines (and Lord know what else) and into impulsive, self-directed action. It’s a cocktail of emotional volatility, epiphanies and communication with no room for take-backs.

The incendiary power comes from radical Uranus being conjunct the Moon, with Mercury in an action-demanding square to Pluto, ruler of metamorphosis and the depths of our beings. It’s time for another round of cathartic structural change. This one is both furthering change and revving our engines for the dramatic blast-off coming at year’s end.

The Full Moon also launches a fortnight of fierce, forced action furthering the process. Mars, the god of war and ruler of our drive and aggression, meets with Pluto on the 19th, then clashes with Uranus on the 28th.

This line-up pounds at structures and fault lines that have been worked over in recent years. It shatters restrictions, real or perceived, no matter the cost. Under this assault, stuck places and impediments have to give; new approaches and progress toward long-term goals are inevitable.

There’s another, less pleasant potential, unfortunately, and that is for fury, accidents and violence. David striking at Goliath is a probable theme, with the twist that each side is certain it’s the little guy fighting the monster.

A saving grace comes from Venus moving into Sagittarius on the 18th, while tension is building. In this jovial, fun-loving mode, the love goddess encourages looking for like-minded companions, humor, adventure and bright spots, come what may.

Venus in Sag can also find sport in argument, however, and fan jingoism and “my way or the highway” entrenchment. Add to this the social niceties of Libra giving way to depth, intensity and the surfacing of unpleasant truths (or demons) when Mercury dives into Scorpio on the 24th.

Discussions about ideas and beliefs could turn serious and nasty, fast. As for what this line-up bodes for politics in late October….alas and alack, we ain’t seen nothing yet. With Venus completing a harsh, demanding aspect to Neptune on the 25th, lies and hidden factors are coming out; illusions are losing appeal; denial is vanishing in a finger snap (or thunder clap).

You can either harness this energy to push ahead on long-term construction and break free dramatically from restraints, or you can let events happen to you that wield a similar impact. Either way, you’re running a gauntlet of experiences that shake you to the core, awaken you to what matters most, and send you running straight for it.

The gauntlet empties into a somber, thoroughly adult meeting between Venus and Saturn on the 29th. You know what you want, and who you want. It’s time to get real. It’s time to put form and structure onto those desires. It’s time to commit.

That act feels appropriate, beneficial, maybe a bit magical and even fated.  Deep, deep intimacy is in the air with the Scorpio New Moon, which brings a fittingly fright-facing, Halloween vibe to the month’s end.

The veil is thin; this side tempts with reasons to stay. While we dance with ghosts, real and costumed, expansive Jupiter is saluting the North Node of Destiny. He’s looking from his current position in the sign of relationships, Libra, and acknowledging the work and improvement projects we perfected during his last year in Virgo. His salute signals:  This way to the future.

Forecast for the 2016 Libra New Moon

September 30, 2016 – October 1, 2016
5:11 PM PDT / 8:11 EDT / 12:11 AM GMT
8 Libra 15

This year’s Libra New Moon launches a phase of new and improved relating.

It’s the first Libra New Moon in 12 year with the optimism and expansiveness of Jupiter in the sign. The beneficent god made his entrance on the 9th, and he’s closing in on the Sun and the Moon as fuse their lights.

He’s sending them subtle but unrelenting suggestions that will color not just this moon phase, but also the next 12 months — genially advocating for more pleasing, harmonious and polite relationships that take both sides of the equation into account.

His clean-up campaign of the last year is over, and now we’re reaping rewards and sharing them. We’re in for an epidemic of social niceties and expansion, improvement and wild optimism in relationships, agreements and artistic creativity.

Jupiter’s encouraging going after what you want, and then some. Bigger is better is his message, impact and goal. “If you can have X,” he whispers, “Why not X to the 10th power? Or 100th?”

Who can resist urgings like that? Not Venus, Libra’s ruler, possessor of the cosmic sweet tooth and ruler of all we hold dear — love, money, art, precious baubles,  systems of values. Desire is her raison d’etre. Suggest indulging to her, and she’s on it before the sentence is finished.

Nor can Neptune, Venus’ spiritually evolved counterpart (aka higher octave). He’s a master of transcending — and, let’s be honest, unhinging from — the dreary confines of worldly experience. Fantasizing, romance chick-flick style, elevating a mere mortal to muse, to inspiration, to fast track to the divine or to the divine itself — Neptune’s gauzy gifts have powers of seduction that invite hanging out with them as long as possible….and then some. More of that? You bet.

Yet neither is suggesting — or allowing — sliding back into, much less going overboard in, old ways. Both rulers of love play a gear shift role in this New Moon.

It’s time to not only ask for more in what we can do together, but also to move relationships on to a more beneficial track. This New Moon is a gateway for consciously embracing and implementing dynamics that are appropriate for who we are now.

There’s not much choice, really. Venus’s semi-sextile is driving home how drastically and permanently our concepts of relating have evolved. Neptune’s adjustment aspect (inconjunct) indicates that there’s still tweaking to be done in how we deal with each other. More compassion is likely needed. So, too, is unhooking from fantasy and bringing Neptune’s sweet potential down through the clouds and into something that can exist in earth’s atmosphere.

Besides, sea changes in relating have been coming more and more to the fore as our foundations have groaned, cracked and restructured over the past few years. Relationship rule books have been undergoing radical revising since since the end of 2013, when Venus’ paramour Mars got into the ring with cosmic change agents Uranus and Pluto.

Though experiences have varied from person to person, the changes have had some common themes: greater self-awareness, greater willingness to put cards on the table, and near-zero tolerance for settling and, well, tolerating. (Thank you, Aries/Libra eclipses!).

We’re less inclined to remake or posture ourselves based on what we think or imagine or project the other person wants or needs. (No more living out “Bend Me, Shape Me,” the American Breed song that was a hit in the 1960s, and a Piscean Age anthem if ever there was one.)

The updated paradigm is of self-possessed, self-aware individuals choosing to stand side by side, rather than enmeshing and drowning in each other. Gone is the model of one person bearing the bulk of the responsibility for the relationship; give and take is much more part of the picture, too.

More refining is to come in the next few months. In October, Mars is heading back into the fray with the cosmic change agents, this time to meet directly with Pluto in Capricorn and have a showdown with Uranus in Aries. By the end of the year, Jupiter will be in the ring himself and egging on both sides of the change imperative.

Don’t fool yourself, though. This New Moon, and the phase it ushers in, are not all hearts and flowers. Libra energy is more about seeking balance than having it.

With Jupiter in the mix, watch for scales to go wildly out of balance and polarizing to grow even more extreme. It’s daunting to think that could get worse, given the Us Against Them vibe that has politics in a stranglehold. Yet it will.

More fierceness, more outlandishness and more entrenchment are all in store as the sides of each equation rock and try to commandeer the seesaw. The dynamic will show up individual relationships and public/social conflicts. It will also pit archetypal poles against each other, such as love against fear, masculine against feminine (new horizons in misogyny, oh goodie1), art against greed.

Knowing that, and knowing that fine-tuning is coming later this year, welcome and work with the auspicious potential of this New Moon. Consciously embrace it as a fresh start. Consciously embrace a new model for your relationships and your approach to them.

Libra loves vows. Honor this New Moon by making some vows to yourself. Here are a few that will stand you well.

Be honest with yourself about what you need, what you are (and are not) willing to do and what you are (and are not) willing to receive or expect.

Ask for what you want.

Adopt the Golden Rule as daily life mantra:  Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. Be kind. Treat others with respect.

Be mindful of the power of words. Endeavor to speak gently. Episodes of “The Andy Griffith Show” are a master class in manipulating an awkward situation to everyone’s benefit, without humiliating anyone or hurting feelings (usually Barney’s or Aunt Bee’s).

On the other hand, don’t go overboard with soft-sell or backhandedness. Libra’s flair with words and non-confrontational streak can wander into passive-aggression and outright deceit. You’re more honest with yourself now. Accord others that courtesy.

Treat your relationships as a gift. Tell special people how you feel. Graceful, heartfelt sentiments have magical powers.

Dream big, together, and see how much grace and beauty, joy and magic you can summon into this worldly existence. Then tell the rest of us about it, okay?

Forecast for the 2016 Libra New Moon

September 30, 2016 – October 1, 2016

5:11 PM PDT / 8:11 EDT / 12:11 AM GMT

8 Libra 15

This year’s Libra New Moon launches a phase of new and improved relating.

It’s the first Libra New Moon in 12 years with the optimism and expansiveness of Jupiter in the sign. The beneficent god made his entrance on the 9th, and he’s closing in on the Sun and the Moon as they fuse their lights.

Forecast for September 5 – 11, 2016

We’re traveling on instruments this week. Honing, refocusing and cutting back while record-level fog blocks eyes and reason. Asking for dreams to come true. Choosing not to isolate; striving to play nice with others. All these concepts connect, somehow.

Bonus: Listen to my talks on this Mercury retrograde & what the fall holds in store.
