What’s that emerging from the deep? Monsters? Or treasures? Or both? Whichever, they’re huge, primal and laying it all on the emotional bottom line. We’ll be evaluating them (and those questions) under the cold, calculating light of the Capricorn Full Moon.

Well, maybe not as cold as usual, except for patches of frozen rage. And even that may be morphing into something much hotter.

Intense. Uncomfortable. Clarifying. Life-changing.

Forecast for the 2016 Libra New Moon

September 30, 2016 – October 1, 2016
5:11 PM PDT / 8:11 EDT / 12:11 AM GMT
8 Libra 15

This year’s Libra New Moon launches a phase of new and improved relating.

It’s the first Libra New Moon in 12 year with the optimism and expansiveness of Jupiter in the sign. The beneficent god made his entrance on the 9th, and he’s closing in on the Sun and the Moon as fuse their lights.

He’s sending them subtle but unrelenting suggestions that will color not just this moon phase, but also the next 12 months — genially advocating for more pleasing, harmonious and polite relationships that take both sides of the equation into account.

His clean-up campaign of the last year is over, and now we’re reaping rewards and sharing them. We’re in for an epidemic of social niceties and expansion, improvement and wild optimism in relationships, agreements and artistic creativity.

Jupiter’s encouraging going after what you want, and then some. Bigger is better is his message, impact and goal. “If you can have X,” he whispers, “Why not X to the 10th power? Or 100th?”

Who can resist urgings like that? Not Venus, Libra’s ruler, possessor of the cosmic sweet tooth and ruler of all we hold dear — love, money, art, precious baubles,  systems of values. Desire is her raison d’etre. Suggest indulging to her, and she’s on it before the sentence is finished.

Nor can Neptune, Venus’ spiritually evolved counterpart (aka higher octave). He’s a master of transcending — and, let’s be honest, unhinging from — the dreary confines of worldly experience. Fantasizing, romance chick-flick style, elevating a mere mortal to muse, to inspiration, to fast track to the divine or to the divine itself — Neptune’s gauzy gifts have powers of seduction that invite hanging out with them as long as possible….and then some. More of that? You bet.

Yet neither is suggesting — or allowing — sliding back into, much less going overboard in, old ways. Both rulers of love play a gear shift role in this New Moon.

It’s time to not only ask for more in what we can do together, but also to move relationships on to a more beneficial track. This New Moon is a gateway for consciously embracing and implementing dynamics that are appropriate for who we are now.

There’s not much choice, really. Venus’s semi-sextile is driving home how drastically and permanently our concepts of relating have evolved. Neptune’s adjustment aspect (inconjunct) indicates that there’s still tweaking to be done in how we deal with each other. More compassion is likely needed. So, too, is unhooking from fantasy and bringing Neptune’s sweet potential down through the clouds and into something that can exist in earth’s atmosphere.

Besides, sea changes in relating have been coming more and more to the fore as our foundations have groaned, cracked and restructured over the past few years. Relationship rule books have been undergoing radical revising since since the end of 2013, when Venus’ paramour Mars got into the ring with cosmic change agents Uranus and Pluto.

Though experiences have varied from person to person, the changes have had some common themes: greater self-awareness, greater willingness to put cards on the table, and near-zero tolerance for settling and, well, tolerating. (Thank you, Aries/Libra eclipses!).

We’re less inclined to remake or posture ourselves based on what we think or imagine or project the other person wants or needs. (No more living out “Bend Me, Shape Me,” the American Breed song that was a hit in the 1960s, and a Piscean Age anthem if ever there was one.)

The updated paradigm is of self-possessed, self-aware individuals choosing to stand side by side, rather than enmeshing and drowning in each other. Gone is the model of one person bearing the bulk of the responsibility for the relationship; give and take is much more part of the picture, too.

More refining is to come in the next few months. In October, Mars is heading back into the fray with the cosmic change agents, this time to meet directly with Pluto in Capricorn and have a showdown with Uranus in Aries. By the end of the year, Jupiter will be in the ring himself and egging on both sides of the change imperative.

Don’t fool yourself, though. This New Moon, and the phase it ushers in, are not all hearts and flowers. Libra energy is more about seeking balance than having it.

With Jupiter in the mix, watch for scales to go wildly out of balance and polarizing to grow even more extreme. It’s daunting to think that could get worse, given the Us Against Them vibe that has politics in a stranglehold. Yet it will.

More fierceness, more outlandishness and more entrenchment are all in store as the sides of each equation rock and try to commandeer the seesaw. The dynamic will show up individual relationships and public/social conflicts. It will also pit archetypal poles against each other, such as love against fear, masculine against feminine (new horizons in misogyny, oh goodie1), art against greed.

Knowing that, and knowing that fine-tuning is coming later this year, welcome and work with the auspicious potential of this New Moon. Consciously embrace it as a fresh start. Consciously embrace a new model for your relationships and your approach to them.

Libra loves vows. Honor this New Moon by making some vows to yourself. Here are a few that will stand you well.

Be honest with yourself about what you need, what you are (and are not) willing to do and what you are (and are not) willing to receive or expect.

Ask for what you want.

Adopt the Golden Rule as daily life mantra:  Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. Be kind. Treat others with respect.

Be mindful of the power of words. Endeavor to speak gently. Episodes of “The Andy Griffith Show” are a master class in manipulating an awkward situation to everyone’s benefit, without humiliating anyone or hurting feelings (usually Barney’s or Aunt Bee’s).

On the other hand, don’t go overboard with soft-sell or backhandedness. Libra’s flair with words and non-confrontational streak can wander into passive-aggression and outright deceit. You’re more honest with yourself now. Accord others that courtesy.

Treat your relationships as a gift. Tell special people how you feel. Graceful, heartfelt sentiments have magical powers.

Dream big, together, and see how much grace and beauty, joy and magic you can summon into this worldly existence. Then tell the rest of us about it, okay?

Forecast for the December 2015 Cancer Full Moon

2015 Cancer Full Moon
December 25, 2015
3:11 AM PST / 6:11 EST / 11:11 AM GMT
3 Cancer 19 / 3 Capricorn 19

The heavens are giving a phenomenal boost to the Christmas season this year. The day that celebrates a child’s birth sees the moon full in Cancer, the sign of motherhood, home, family and tradition. It’s an appropriate placement, given how associated this time is with family gatherings, festive meals and time-honored rituals. True, all of these have a way of adorning emotional baggage, but don’t be so sure the usual unpleasantness is in store this week. It has the potential for a surprisingly sweet, yummy time, a swelling of hearts and a well-needed respite from the harshness of recent weeks.

Emotions are running high. The Moon is in her home base, which encourages hypersensitivity, even in the Scrooges among us, and turns emotional barometers up to 11. For a change, our feelings are actually lining up with the emphasis of this time of year.  Cues for how to feel and act may be bombarding us in stores, on TV and online, but they are not what’s triggering the emotions cresting within us.  Whether you celebrate this holiday or not, whether you’re with family, stuck at work or waiting out the long weekend on your lonesome, you’re likely to be riding a wave of nostalgia, sentimentality and renewed appreciation of blood and chosen bonds.

The event and the days around it are occupying their own extraordinary spot on the time/space continuum. This Moon culminates amid clouds of …. well, no one knows quite what. We’re in a fuzzy-woozy atmosphere that feels unhinged from normal reality. That atmosphere is with us for the foreseeable future, thanks to an ongoing clash between Saturn, lord of order, and Neptune, lord of formlessness and transcendence. This Full Moon is in a direct, easy flow to the magical, unearthly, illusory end of that clash, which pushes this week’s experiences into a sweetness bordering on cinematic.

The link to Neptune is pouring glamour into the swirling wisps and clouds and fog that envelop life now. They’re filling with gentleness, kindness, tenderness and compassion as well. Breathe them in deeply; they are a healing mist, and they are spanning timelines and dimensions. They teem with the best qualities of any Christmastime you’ve experienced, along with the best qualities you’ve not yet enjoyed. You may be surprisingly, acutely aware of how deeply connected you feel to the people around you (yes, even your relatives; even the people for whom you have a carefully compiled list of grievances to air). This may include recognizing the role that has been played for you by gatherings and relationships you have taken for granted, and at times resented. Even if you’re alone, you’ll likely wise up to what you need in order to feel safe, secure and loved (and come away determined to bring that into your life).

Some moments and interactions may feel uncommonly precious, thanks to a nagging realization that this experience will not last and will not come again in quite this form. Savor the moment and the people who are sharing it with you. Next year’s Christmas season and late-winter gatherings will have a different configuration; everyone is moving on. Your exit cue will begin tugging at you on the 25th itself, in the midst of the day’s activities, when Uranus the awakener stations direct and permanently tilts your perspective. You may be opening presents, giving a hug, changing the TV channel, helping yourself to pie and coffee. Suddenly you will know you’re heading off, maybe not that day, but soon, and into your own direction. So give the old traditions one last go-round  — one last grand hurrah.

It’s possible, of course, that some people will translate these influences through a darkly clouded filter and fall into self-pity, taking things personally, or feeling victimized, unappreciated or unloved. If you sense yourself succumbing to any of these, stop. Pull yourself out and do something nurturing, for yourself first of all. The loving and healing possibilities of this Full Moon are not to be squandered.

Use this Full Moon to experience and explore what makes you feel safe, secure and loved. Spend time on activities that feed your soul and let everything else go. (That impulse is why so many people have gone into this season deliberately shelving all kinds of activities that once filled their schedules.) Enjoy this time, its traditions, gatherings and sharing food (don’t fight it; indulge), and the people you care about. Let people off the hook – your parents, your kids, your siblings — and do the same for yourself. Be present in this holiday season like you have never been before.

May sweetness, tenderness and abiding love be yours.

Forecast for the 2015 Sagittarius New Moon

December 11, 2015

2:29 AM PST / 5:29 AM EST / 10:29 AM GMT

19 Sagittarius 2

by Kathy Biehl

As turmoil, violence and divisiveness escalate to jaw-dropping proportions, the Sagittarius New Moon invites us to look at and broaden our outlook on life.

Beliefs, laws, national boundaries, foreigners, religious and ethical teachings, prejudices, and the role of higher education and big media are all up for attention and a fresh look now. None are theoretical topics, but highly active factors, individually and collectively. They’re taking wildly exaggerated form  now, which has two noteworthy effects. Their cartoonish appearance makes them impossible to miss or ignore. And so are their real-world impact and ramifications.

This year’s edition of the Sag New Moon is being pumped up by a hard angle to the sign’s ruler, Jupiter. The king of the gods ups any action he approaches, and his bellows are certainly one of the forces behind the current epidemic of blowhards. He’s coaxing out the more extreme potentials of Sagittarius, the fringes where adventure and willingness to explore cross over into self-righteousness, intellectual superiority, “My way or the highway” and co-opting the term “patriot” to condemn anyone who disagrees.

Jupiter’s not all hot air, though. He also has a bent for beneficence, warm-heartedness and optimism, all of which are beaming into and amplifying the New Moon’s potentials as well.  Staying near that side of the fire will make it easier to hang on to a positive attitude, the ability to see the good in people and the inclination to look for a silver lining, no matter what. Useful questions to contemplate in the next month:  How could I learn more? How could I clean up and improve my thinking? My attitude? My beliefs? How could I broaden my experience of the world?  Where could I go that I haven’t yet? What if I were to consider someone else’s point of view?

Be on the lookout for indications of how well (or not) what you think to be true lines up with what you’re seeing and experiencing in the world. If there’s a disconnect, this Moon is an appropriate time for tinkering, either on the end of your beliefs or your beliefs in action.

Easier said than done, of course, especially in the current disorienting atmosphere.  This is the first Sagittarius New Moon since the mid-80s with Saturn in its sign. Although they are not touching, Saturn’s presence does serve as a grounding cord, pulling all of the associated issues and influences down onto the earth — and imposing consequences and ramifications in practical, mundane terms.

The Moon takes place while a clash is still reverberating between Saturn, the lord of rules, order and mundane reality, and Neptune, the lord of formlessness, transcendence and illusion. That pair is whipping up confusion, sending the cosmic fog machine onto overdrive (with authority figures’ hands on the switch), and escalating situations where we have been fooling or lying to ourselves. Like Jupiter’s input, this pair offers positive potentials, too, of course. Wisdom and enlightenment are by-products. So are dreams coming into physical form. They are unfolding ever so painstakingly, on a time table no mortal intelligence can control or rush.

Open your mind to what is blossoming and gather whatever information, learning or expanded perspective supports that. Those endeavors will occupy your mind constructively while you encounter and explore other aspects of this New Moon.  The configuration around it lights up issues of integrity, personal responsibility and consequences. One of the themes of last month’s Gemini Full Moon continues: Ideas are not mere theories; they have an impact on the physical world, and on people’s lives. Words do have the power to hurt.

On a personal level, how are your beliefs playing out around you? Are they supporting or hurting you? Other people? Looking at the question from the opposite direction, what does the state of your life say about your beliefs?

Once you embark on an inquiry like this, it will be impossible to not move it out from beyond your immediate experience of life. The clamor is deafening on the collective level, with public figures in this country making extreme proclamations that put into question what we believe to be true about ourselves as a people, and as people. The public conversation includes a presidential candidate arguing for closing the borders to one religious group and uprooting and deporting residents who belong to it; other candidates aligning with a minister who preaches death to gays; a Supreme Court Justice stating that one race is too slow to attend quality universities; and a self-identified Christian legislator proposing to personally gun down refugees.

All are examples of the amped-up Sagittarius New Moon and the Saturn/Neptune square in action. This Moon raises questions of mundane consequences for beliefs, the responsible transmission of beliefs and ideas via the media and, on a fundamental level, whether our ground rules (the First Amendment, the legality of abortion, civil rights, the very Constitution) still fit or whether circumstances warrant ignoring, breaking or changing them. And if that’s the case, what that means for or says about the real nature of this country.

With the Sagittarius New Moon, these instances are not just stories in the news. They are calls for attention and action. We may not be in the position to pull the plug on someone’s mic. We may not have the power to shut down hate- and violence-inducing speech.  We do have the power to examine our own beliefs, our own ways of living, our own attitudes about people who are different from us. We also have the right to consider what kind of a society and country we want to live in – and respond without reinforcing or escalating the negative. We can endeavor to see the terror and loss of control on the part of the people who preach violence, hate and fear, and the people who buy it. We can commit not to add to the panic, the fear, the hate, the demonizing, the pain, the cruelty, the absolute terror. We can tidy up our little nook in this universe, no matter how tiny that may be. We can strive to treat people with respect, dignity and compassion, and to live in optimism, integrity and warm-heartedness. And keep our spark burning bright for others to see and join.

Forecast for December 2015

December may have you wondering if humankind lives in parallel universes that masquerade as one. Each of them is now undergoing a massive evolutionary surge, furthering agendas and fundamental restructuring that have been years in the works.  In one layer, kindness, creativity and concern for the existence of others underlie and ultimately propel a flurry of activity that will feel like long-desired progress. In the other, demagoguery, zealotry, lies and delusion spur and justify anger, violence and, by year’s end, sacrifice and martyrdom.

The milk of human kindness is on tap as the month begins (at least, in universe number one). Drink up and pass it around. It may buffer the occasional and inevitable bleed-through of unpleasantries from the adjoining realm.

The month launches with lightning bolts tilting our thinking and letting in broader, possibly healthier possibilities.  Desires and interactions slip into into deeper, possessive mode when Venus, ruler of all we value, moves into Scorpio on the 4th, which she’ll pass through for most of the month. Activity flies for the first 10 days, and it’s not all holiday and year-end tasks. It’s also pushing ahead on the ongoing restructuring of our foundations and long-term security, with Mars, ruler of our drive, entering the ring with cosmic change agents Uranus and Pluto.

His last time there was the week between Christmas and New Year’s in 2013. Watch for the next stage of developments that cracked open then, only this time we’re more invested emotionally and financially.  The impact puts testosterone, follow-through and a compulsion to connect in high supply. Relationships and agreements play an enormous role. They instigate, push us, blossom, deepen and/or permanently change their nature. Anger and violence abound as well; December 6 and 10 are particularly hot.

Awareness of cost, consequences and practicalities permeates conversation and commutes after the 9th, when cosmic messenger Mercury enters Capricorn. He’ll retrograde in the sign at the beginning of next year, so matters are likely to come back up then from the last weeks of the month. His presence in earth rather than his preferred element of air lends weightiness to the holiday and year-end info flow. Gatherings will be few, small and select, with serious talk and a higher than usual presence of connections that have stood the test of time.

His mature disposition provides grounding as the Sagittarius New Moon squares Chiron on the 11th and encourages putting long-standing wounds and business to rest. The process promises to go easily, riding on sweet and loving vibes coming off the two rulers of love, Venus and Neptune. If you’ll been running low on the milk of human kindness, that’s the time for a refill.

The vibes give way to personal growth (of the pressure-on-carbon-creating-a-diamond variety) and a maturing in heart and financial connections, as well as in that perspective shift we got at the month’s start. An idea is taking possession, perhaps an effect of those lightning bolts, passionate, all-consuming, intense and clarifying. It summons another round of lightning bolts and a flurry of mental jail breaks.

The clatter is still in the air as the Sun enters Capricorn on the 21st, the longest day of the year and the start of winter.  A warm, expansive and nostalgic glow envelops Christmas Eve and Day. Their trappings are fit for an old-fashioned Hollywood movie, courtesy of the Christmas Full Moon in home-oriented Cancer: sentimentality, memories of the good old days, appreciation (okay, maybe simply awareness of) loved ones, indulging in food, food and more food.

The sweetness comes with signals that life will never be the same. Uranus, the agent of liberating change, is stationing to move forward; even as we exchange gifts and hugs, everyone is pulling up anchor and heading for distinctive adventures and futures. Our own values and desires are guiding our actions. Emphatic, separating conversation may be necessary to spell this out in the year’s final days, but it’s not likely to squelch a lovely holiday vibe. (In the first parallel universe number, that is. The other one looks to be completely unhinged from reason by then.)

The holiday atmosphere gets a boost when Venus enters Sagittarius for a four-week stay on the 30th. She encourages fun, cracking jokes, getting out with other people and exploring (though she may not so privately be convinced that her way of thinking is superior). Even so, this New Year’s Eve is not the stuff of mob scenes. We are ending the year with refocused hearts and minds, inclined to connect with a select few.

Turn off the news and concentrate on shoring up your little nook of the universe. You can’t stop the violence or the crazies, but you can maintain your own sanity and joy and allow that to radiate outward and maybe, just maybe slip into the universe next door.

The last day of the year encourages tenderness, intimacy and profound embracing of personal truth and streamlined but unshakeble priorities. They stay with us and mold our vision as we ring out the old and welcome the new.

May peace an love guide your hearts and lead you into the new year.
