Decisions, Decisions: Forecast for the 2014 Virgo New Moon

August 25, 2014
7:12 AM PDT / 10:12 AM EDT / 2:12 PM PDT
2 Virgo 18

This year’s Virgo New Moon forecast has so many possible titles:  The Day of the Terminator. Lines in the Sand. The Cosmic Alarm Clock. Stop It!

However you label it, this year’s Virgo New Moon means business. It has a back-to-school, back-to-work vibe on steroids, knocking cobwebs from our thinking, waking us from summer doldrums and marshaling fierce, decisive action.

Summer will technically still be with us for another three weeks, but we’ll all be packing up our beach toys and heading for the next, more serious phase. Or finding ourselves suddenly in a vastly different environment, as if unseen hands had changed the set while we blinked.

Some of the action might sting, or stun. This Moon is applying a scalpel to all manner of situations — some long festering, some bottle-necked, some deep, dark and dank, and all ripe to be aired, transmuted, and potentially healed. There’s no room for equivocating, ambivalence, hedging bets or postponing. The Terminator is paying each of us a visit, and resistance is futile, as many a science fiction character says. In many cases he’s doing us a favor.

Everything has ramifications and consequences for the long haul, particularly in our thinking and relationships. We will care, deeply, and that caring is both the launchpad and target. This Moon may be in an intellectual sign, but hearts, passions and values are driving and bearing the brunt of the action. Attitudes will crystalize and spur monumental decisions and actions. You may suddenly see a person or situation in a light that moves them closer or further away. Clues will have been there all along; your perception is what’s new.

The Moon’s ferocity comes from the teamwork of its ruler, Mercury, lord of our information and transportation flow, warrior god Mars and Saturn, ruler of time, order and obligations. The second pair are the real source, close as they can be in the sign of Scorpio. Their fusing is the Terminator, precipitating aggression, strikes, endings, and other acts of commitment, with no going back. This could be positive, remember. It is the outgrowth of the first seven months of the year, the moment of implementing permanent changes that have been under consideration and in progress since Mars bivouacked in the relationship sign of Libra.

Libra’s ruler, the goddess of love, is pushing for action, too. Venus, overseer of all we hold dear, is in a tight, no-nonsense angle to Mars and Saturn that says:  It’s time. Get moving. Give me what I want and get rid of what I don’t.  Her shoves, and their responses, will not be subtle or boring. Pitch   feminine and masculine archetypes in high-drama, attention-demanding Leo against magnetic, primal Scorpio and passions will send off steam, erupt or boil over. (Note to relationship fence-sitters:  good luck staying put!)

Only situations with substance and staying power can survive and flourish now. The trivial, the decaying, the outmoded are all being uprooted and cast aside. Mercury’s position, in an exact sextile to the pair, presents opportunities for decluttering thinking and data streams. (Faltering technology doesn’t have a chance; be prepared to visit tech support or go shopping.) Violence, force and, alas, deaths, will turn minds around and spur people to decisions and action.

Some of that may be anything but rational.  Neptune’s cosmic fog machine is billowing away, with the Moon moving directly opposite it. That will cloud some thinking, spread some illusions or expose some delusions while Mercury is opening the door to demons, paranoia, terrors and the impulse to act on them. (“This is for your own good,” will be a common phrase. So will, “This hurts me more than it hurts you.”)

Cling fast to the higher potentials. They are plentiful, as dark as the news has been lately.  There’s a benefit to all the metaphoric snakes coming out from under rocks. Now that they are visible, we can — and have to — deal with them.

In your own life, notice what is surfacing from your subconscious and cellular programming. Feel it, then tackle it. Take action to change the role it plays:  Drop blaming other people and also yourself. Admit the often tiny ways in which you belittle and devalue yourself. Decide to honor yourself. Choose different language to tell your story.

You can achieve all this without years of therapy. That’s the marvel of this New Moon. Change can come in an instant. Truly. Cosmic quick-change artist Uranus is collaborating with Venus to spring us from stasis and limitation.  Add that to the pressure she’s putting on Mars and Saturn, and movement is inevitable.

It may make startle or shock you. It may make you wince or cry. It will make you see your heart’s investments in a new light. If you are not receiving appreciation and return, guess what? You’ve been given carte blanche to walk away guilt-free. Guess what else? The external playing out is reflecting your own internal process. Your heart is insisting on change. The most important place for that, for you, is in your mind.

This Virgo New Moon is a living phrase book of adages. They’re overused, but everso apt:  Change is an inside job. It’s all in your mind. Change your thinking; change your life.  Advice you’ve been hearing for years. It feels right now, though, doesn’t it? Yep. Make it so.

And if you find your mind wandering to worry or unsupportive thinking, help yourself to this reminder:

Light a Candle; Fuel Your Spark: Staying Bright Amid the Darkness

When is life going to calm down? What’s behind all these crazy awful losses? Why has one person’s death hit us so hard?

These are real questions I’ve been asked this week. The atmosphere is dark and complex; I don’t argue the point. We do have reason to keep going, to enjoy being alive and to share that joy — if we can just keep sight of that.

We have crossed, astrologically, into a new way of being. We’re all a little disoriented. Much that previously defined existence — structures, institutions, borders, definitions, allegiances — has been beaten and pounded out of recognizable contours. That scares a lot of people. Remember that.

Change, instability and turmoil are constant factors, running like a background program. They’re with us for the foreseeable future, as the cosmic change agents Uranus and Pluto continue to crack open aspects of our beings and our world.  They’ve already set fundamental restructuring in motion, with five exact hits behind them since 2012. Two more tectonic shifts are coming, next December and March, but at this point we have a good sense of the game board, and of what and where the areas of instability and reworking are. Now we’re in a mode of adapting, adjusting, assimilating and incorporating. Many of us, anyway. Some people are still in the mode of acting, insisting, screaming and bullying as if the world is as it was (or often, as it never really was). Remember that, too.

Add to this a growing recognition that life will never be as it was. We certainly will not be. This year especially has pushed us into greater personal awareness, honesty, nurturing and acceptance. We’ve refocused and streamlined personal shortlists, of values, goals, friends, causes and what we want in our lives in general. Radical change agent Uranus has been in cahoots with one new moon after another, blasting us out of situations, beliefs and factors that are Not Us and into individuation and self-actualization.  The full moons have fostered cutting back, away and out whatever no longer fits. The Aquarius full moon on August 10 in particular dropped like a machete. It forced drastic action, solutions and endings, with lasting ramifications, on issues involving trust, debt, joint endeavors, appropriateness of investment, terrors and mortality.

Swirling under all of this is a current between Saturn, lord of structure, order, rules and responsibility, in Pluto’s home of Scorpio, and Chiron, embodiment of our abiding wounds, in the all-encompassing waters of Pisces. This is stirring the issue in your life that just won’t go away, with two extremes in potential. One is making peace with it, forgiving yourself and allowing yourself to be human; going by divine guidance, finding firmer footing, committing to yourself and your right to be here. The other is overwhelm, oppression, feeling crushed, felling utterly isolated or completely enmeshed in others, escaping by any means possible, or staring or falling or diving or being sucked into an abyss of pain, darkness, addiction or delusion.

If teach of us were on a private journey here, the impact would be different. Trouble is, we’re all doing this in the same pond. We’re swimming in each other’s experiences and pain and agonies, not to mention being exposed to the deaths and losses and atrocities and emotional reactions that fill social media.

Robin Williams’ death hit many of us hard because of all these influences. He has loomed large in our collective psyche for some 40 years. His departure was an echo of the Celebrity Death Epidemic of the summer of 2010, when a succession of people left who’d had a defining influence over the second half of the 20th Century. This was another door slam on that century and, for many people, their youth.

He also provided a loss that people could identify with. Tales of war horrors and police brutality are hard to wrap our brains (and hearts) around. Robin Williams put a face, and a much beloved one, on death, and gave a point of focus for emotions that been swelling without expression.

He has drawn awareness to wounds in our psyches, too, as well as the enormous challenges of coping with what’s going on in the world. Much talk has flown around about depression and addiction being widespread problems, to which no social or economic level are immune. He also carried the energy of major astrological imperatives. His birth chart was worked over, and hard, by the cardinal cross of this last April, and the Saturn/Chiron flow flooded both his Cancer sun and Pisces moon. (That moon enabled him to connect to so many people artistically and personally, and to make so much of his audience feel a connection to him in return.) If one of the most super-charged, force-of-nature creative spirits of our lifetime couldn’t go on in this world, what does this say for our world? And bode for the rest of us?

Several things:

Safeguard your spark. Boundaries, clearing and periodically separating are critical. (If you don’t have ways to pull that off, pick some up in my free, hour-long talk Navigating the Shift.)  Be ruthlessly self-protective. Pay attention to when mood shifts; start tracking when you are sponging up other people’s emotions, reaction and dramas. Put on blinders if you have to. Stop following and obsessing over news that upsets you. Delete social media posts. Limit time on social media, too, especially when a story or a topic fills your feed with emotional contagion. Recognize that fear is rampant, and part of the force behind so much hateful, destructive talk and behavior. Have compassion for the people engaging in both — but step away from them.

Fuel your spark. Make a point to do things you enjoy, no matter how little. Find reasons to celebrate, again, no matter how little. Dress up; be flamboyant; sparkle; shine; treat yourself well. Two planets in Leo encourage this:  beneficent, optimistic, aggrandizing Jupiter and Venus, goddess of all we hold dear. She colors social interactions, and when in Leo she goes for having fun, showing off, drawing attention, and indulging in grand gestures. The two are meeting in a super-conjunction on August 18, by the way. Indulge in your God-given right to be you at your most dramatic and flamboyant, and share the wealth. Which leads to:

Share your spark. Don’t isolate; reach out. Socialize. Smile at strangers. Be friendly to sales clerks. Have fun with other people. Throw parties, or treat every gathering as a party. Toast your friends’ successes and good news. Be generous with your time, your energy, your optimism and yourself. By mere example, you may rekindle someone else’s desire to keep going. Think of one candle lighting another and then another. The combined flame is brighter and bigger and casts wider light and warmth.

And the sharing and spreading of life force is the only effective way, really, to counterbalance all the negativity and despair. If you get into a screaming match with an unhappy person, if you try to debate someone who is spewing vitriol, if you do direct battle with negativity or, let’s be honest, evil, you will come away tainted. Your spark will sputter. You may stare into the abyss, for reasons that may not be your own. Better to burn on, shine on, and encourage other people to stoke their own reason and determination to live.

Whole Lotta Shaking Goin’ On: 2014 Aquarius Full Moon

August 10, 2014
11:09 AM PDT / 2:09 PM EDT / 6:09 PM GMT
18 Aquarius 2 / 18 Leo 2

“I’m changin’, arrangin’, I’m changin,’ I’m changin’ everything, ah everything around me” — Reflections of My Life, by Marmalade

All Full Moons bring a phase of culmination and harvest. This month’s Aquarius Full Moon also delivers pressure to act on whatever‘s coming to a head.

Individuation and being blasted out of entrenchment are key themes. The first and main place they play out is in our thinking — especially our thinking about ourselves.

We get a dress rehearsal on Friday, when the Sun and three planets preview the Full Moon’s motivating energies. That run-though heightens self-awareness, shakes us up with a lightning bolt or two, and demands rethinking a few givens.

All of which hits home emotionally by the Full Moon proper. This party has dynamics that no one can escape. They’re a Molotov cocktail of sudden shifts, epiphanies, daring, passions, grandstanding and intellectualizing, largely forcing issues of values, trust, sharing and ultimate cost.

The ringleaders behind this concoction are continuing the tight formation from Friday’s preview. The Sun and the Moon are collaborating closely with the Moon’s ruler, cosmic rebel Uranus, to ignite volatility, pump up personal energy and self-expression, and encourage respect for individuality (especially one’s own). The old guard’s in the house, too, though, and those three bodies are challenging him: Saturn, ruler of structure, order, and consequences. His domain is up for deep change and sudden adjustments. The Sun and the Moon are pressuring Saturn in a dynamic pattern called a t-square, which escalates tension to the point that action is inevitable. Uranus is making an adjustment aspect to him (for the rest of the summer, actually) that will cause the balance of power or emphasis on many a see-saw to flip in the blink of an eye.

Watch for “Aha!” Moments — there will be plenty — and where they take you. Logic won’t be guiding the path (although we still have the benefit of mental clarity and self-awareness delivered on Friday by mind master Mercury). Responses and reactions are more likely to be emotional, instinctive and impulsive.

The combination of celestial energies will birth emotional awakenings and realignments both inside and out.  It will facilitate breaking out of stuck places, in many cases by smashing them with a sucker punch. Invite it in to those situations that have held you back, crawled to a halt or defied resolution. (Surely you’ve got one or two lying around?) The omens are favorable for shape-shifting out-of-balance financial agreements in particular and shattering limiting programming (EFT is one approach).

This Full Moon’s developments will continuing to percolate, boil and send off steam into the fall, thanks to the ongoing inconjunct between Saturn and Uranus. The specifics are unpredictable, but the process is anything but. Self-knowledge leads to increased self-expression, which leads to  everything around you rearranging in response. This weekend’s Full Moon is part of the launch pad for the high energy and, yes, fun to come in the fall. Welcome it!
