Forecast for February 2015

“Magical Mystery Tour” is the theme song of the month. We’re on a strange and wondrous journey of love, compassion and the otherworldly. The ultimate destination? A kinder, gentler relationship with ourselves.

The gatekeeper at both ends of the month is Neptune, bringer of magic and transcendence and operator of the cosmic fog machine.  His involvement cloaks much of the month’s developments in a soft, wispy vagueness, at times magical, at times confusing, and generally bypassing rational thinking.

The atmosphere is hardly conducive to completing tax returns. It’s tailor made — heaven sent, actually — for letting heart and spirit guide you.

The channel opens wide as the month begins, when Neptune greets Venus, goddess of all we hold dear. This contact unites the rulers of earthly and divine love, and the effects are dreamy indeed. On common by-product: the sensation of blissful, blessed connectedness, whether that spells romance or not (which it will for some; look for stars dancing in eyes a la Davy Jones and his leading lady of the week on “The Monkees.”)

Some connections spark with the Leo Full Moon on the 3rd, which show how well and far our inner light is shining – and who appreciates its flame. Uranus is beaming sudden, liberating change into the equation, while bountiful Jupiter is pouring on flame accelerant. Emotions and life force will flare, mostly significantly within. Whatever erupts within you and without you primes dramatic developments that will erupt in March, when Jupiter links directly to Uranus.

The middle of the month brings opportunities to face and potentially give in to desires that have a magnetism bordering on unnerving. They are puzzle pieces in the unavoidable, fundamental restructuring we’ve been undergoing for the past three years. Rational thinking has nothing to do with situations so primal. Higher guidance and your heart are more reliable navigational tools (which is, to be honest, the case all month long).

Speaking of thinking, that remains tricky for the first half of the month. Mercury is retrograde until the 11th and does not begin moving noticeably until the 15th. Continue to clear up old business and loose ends. Meet up with any old friends or loves who resurface, a likely result of Venus in Pisces with Mercury retrograde. Even after his about-face, holding to the usual precautions would not be a bad idea. You can review them in Handling Mercury Retrograde.

The New Moon on the 18th befits the month’s pervasive vagueness and boundary blurring. Technically it occurs at the very last minute of the very last degree of Aquarius, hitting the gas pedal once again on the imperative to express your unique self. It also, however, activates the beginning of Pisces and unleashes that sign’s rawest, most feral and instigating form. Fittingly, this Moon launches the Chinese Year of the gentle, loving, other-oriented Wood Sheep. The combo has the effect of an enormous wave pushing us forward into unpolished emotional sensitivity, awareness of others and communion with forces outside ordinary earth plane existence.

The atmosphere and energy levels heat up drastically when Mars, ruler of our drive, and Venus enter self-starting, impulsive Aries on the 19th and 20th.  No matter what the weather is doing, spring is awakening within us and spurring us to break out of any barrier, perceived or real. The 19th through the 23rd promise a hotbed of sudden, exciting and daring moves. Venus and Mars are meeting in the first of three conjunctions for the year. The masculine and feminine are at one; your heart and your will are after the same target, and they will pounce without thinking. Both planets quickly meet with Saturn and his love of order and structure. Budding relationships will burst out of shells full-blown and either lock in place or slam into constraints.

On one sure bet: the eruptions and their immediate aftermath will be breathtaking. As our hearts, energies and newly hatched relationship developments head for solid ground, the Sun meets Neptune (the gatekeeper, remember?) on the 25th.  We feel wrapped in gauze, or protection, or love of the highest kind, all the better if directed inward.

That eases the huge structural adjustments that are still in order, and the emotional processing of change that takes us out of the month.  The mists are still hanging but beginning to part. We can glimpse where we’re heading. The destination ahead may not be what we thought at the month’s start. Maybe we’re heading where expected but by a different route. Regardless, our engines are stoked with fuel. There’s no sign of stopping.

A parallel universe version of The Love Boat is setting sail. The passenger list, activities and ports of call might veer from expectations. Cupid isn’t visiting the entire ship. Still, sparks will be igniting on every deck, and in most every heart, stoking  inner fires. And by Sunday, who knows…

2015 Aquarius New Moon

January 20, 2015
0 Aquarius 08
5:13 AM PST / 8:13 AM EST / 1:13 PM GMT

The first New Moon of the year gives us a propulsive send off into the adventures to come. It’s a high-octane blend of fiery individuation, more tectonic plate shifting and cool, cool objectivity.

It may feel like a switch has suddenly flipped, especially given the diffuse, bittersweet energies and the flurry of startling departures in the week preceding We’re being outfitted for blasting out of stuckness and into a wild and wooly future.

The Moon’s ruler, Uranus, is fueling the fire power and shifts. He’s moving toward two contacts that are scheduled to detonate in March: the easy flow of a trine to Jupiter, pouring flame accelerant onto radical liberation and actualization of the self, and the final, change-demanding square to Pluto, which will finish the restructuring of our foundations that has been in process since June 2012.

We’re feeling both already. This Moon delivers an intense kick to perceive the big picture and proceed as if it were already fully in place.  Last minute breaks for freedom will be epidemic, but so will relationships shifting from friendship into solid form as if on a dime.

Just barely into the sign of Aquarius, it is the third of six consecutive degree new moons at the very first degree of their signs. This sequence has been hitting the gas on one area of our chart and lives after another, starting with last November’s Scorpio new moon solar eclipse, and punching up one half of our chart. (To learn what this means for you, order my Getting Started in 2015 guides for each of your sun and rising signs.)

This first-degree location gives the Moon a raw, fierce instigating expression to the traits of the sign she’s occupying. In Aquarius that means unpolished detachment and orientation toward the future and the brotherhood of all mankind. All these characteristics are underscored by the presence of Mercury and Venus in Aquarius, which bring an airy bent to communications and orient us toward friendship and breathing room in relationships.

Don’t be surprised if you’re shot into a new perspective on recent events, even and especially the painful ones, giving you a philosophical understanding of why they happened the way they did and why that is for the best in the long run. You might also glimpse where they are heading.

We’ll have ample opportunity to explore both. Mercury goes retrograde the day following the New Moon, through February 11. His journey will take us over territory we’ve recently covered and allow us to dig deeper and pick up threads of information we might have missed. (Learn more in Handling a Mercury Retrograde.)

At a minimum, the breaks for freedom, new insights and foundation restructuring have a solid, dependable, sober tint to them. The Moon is in a grounding sextile to Saturn, ruler of order and structure, which lends a quality of pulling concepts from the air and tying them down on the earth.  They’re becoming real. What erupts into being now has the potential for staying power. Watch this space, come March, when the detonation goes off.

2015 Cancer Full Moon

January 4-5, 2015

8:53 PM PST / 11:53 PM EST /  4:53 AM GMT

14 Cancer 30 / 14 Capricorn 30

by Kathy Biehl

The first Full Moon of 2015 reawakens the most challenging energies of 2014 and reveals how far we’ve come — and where it’s time to move on.

Even if you’re faring well, the reveal promises discomfort and, ultimately, growth. Although Cancer is the sign of nesting, clucking and kissing booboos to make them better, we are more likely to be craving all that, rather than experiencing it.

The Cancer Full Moon stirs fundamental questions that have plagued us on and off for six years, and most pointedly since last April: How safe, nourished and nurtured do you feel? Do you feel at home in your skin? In the world? How? Where? What role do your relationships play in all your answers?

All of these have undergone profound and irreversible changes in the last few years. Our answers have been more conscious, more specific and more targeted. No matter what your answers are going in, the weekend unlocks other possibilities and perspectives.

Startling twists and developments, involving our sense of security and tribal connections, are erupting now, destabilizing long-term plans and expectations and forcing unapologetic, ruthless and fundamental shape-shifting in each individual. Previous notions of obligation and responsibility are turning on a dime. Being in shock could alternate with emotions cresting and tears overflowing, equally from joy or pain.

The Full Moon locks directly into the change imperative of Uranus and Pluto, which are reworking our inner and outer landscapes through next March. Primal, unavoidable Pluto is with the Sun, reshaping our inner foundations and goals, stripping away artifice and insecurities and birthing new-found confidence, personal power and self-awareness. The Sun, Moon and Pluto are pressuring radical, volatile Uranus, unleashing epiphanies, upending plans and freeing us (want it or not), all in an instant. With Uranus by the South Node, we’re being yanked from outmoded behaviors and old ways of being, particularly if we still believe (or fear) that we can’t rely on others.

It’s all emotional clean-up for last year’s intense restructurings, when we went from feeling the ground beneath our feet periodically and unexpectedly crack open to starting to work actively with the changed conditions. This line-up repeats the tensions of the cardinal cross of last April, which suspended us over fundamental questions of identity, home, relationships and career and gave no room to move, so all we could do was observe them and experience our discomfort.

Now we have a clearer sense of who we are, what we’re dealing with and who is with us. As we move more fully into the restructured terrain, we’re at a moment of emotional acknowledgement and reckoning. There’s an air of situations becoming real, of gravity and of grounding.

Although some of us are grappling with shocks and heart-rending developments, it’s not all painful and unpleasant. Some of what we’re hearing and feeling is calming and reassuring, and even supporting people and matters we cherish, The Sun’s ruler, Saturn, is in a harmonious and cooperative aspect to Venus, ruler of all we hold dear, and Mercury, ruler of communication and getting around. This trio makes it easy to speak from the heart and convey messages with lasting value.  We can hear them as well, thanks to the detachment of Venus and Mercury in Aquarius, which keeps us from submerging in those Cancerian waters and counterbalances the temptation to take anything personally now.

The cooperation among Saturn, Venus and Mercury also bodes well for where our relationships are heading. What transpires now — the emotions that surface and pour out, the uprootings and jolts, the breaks from the past, the skin-shedding and shape-shifting — dovetails with new forms of connecting and communicating. This is a bridging Full Moon, helping us process a backlog of emotions while entering a new, less constricting and more consciously constructed phase of coexistence.

We’re all regenerating into new forms, like Doctor Who, the BBC television character who has changed appearance and personality multiple times over 50 years. Our current regeneration is like the character’s most recent transformation, when the Eleventh Doctor fell quickly backward and lurched upright, just as quickly, as the Twelfth Doctor, no longer a familiar, seductive man-child but an abrupt older figure not yet certain of who he was — or how to fly his ship.  We are, similarly, exploring and accustoming to our new form and figuring out how to maneuver it. We’re still cooking, too.  The energy of regeneration may continue to spill out of our hands and heads for the next few weeks, but we are already on the far side of the process, with no turning back.
