Forecast for January 2015

January signals right out of the gate that this month — and this year — are vastly different from what we’ve experienced lately. Buoyant and brimming with possibility, this phase encourages coming into being, for a change, instead of coming apart.

Optimism and drive descend with the last chime of midnight on the 1st and propel us into a weekend of enlightened, and ultimately grounded, shape-shifting.  Along the way, we could go overboard on resolutions, visions for living on a grander scale, and the immediate schedule taking shape.

A new sense of self is emerging from the pressures of late December 2013 and April, September and October of 2014, without the emotional charge of those times. Intense influences are working us over once again, as the Sun links to cosmic change agents Uranus and Pluto, and the Cancer Full Moon of the 4th awakens the pull and emotions of last April and our journey since then.

This time, though, these influences have the counterbalance of detachment and future vision. The weight is coming off social interactions, thanks to their ruler Venus moving into friendship-oriented Aquarius, where she will remain from the 3rd to the 26th. Objectivity is also pervading our minds, conversations and information flow, with Mercury also entering Aquarius, on the 4th, for an extended stay.

We’ll be in observer mode, taking everything in like Mr. Spock, while we morph and emotions overflow. As paradoxical and woozy-making as that sounds, finding our footing and stabilizing come quickly, as Venus takes Saturn’s hand on the 5th.

The get-up-and-go imperative fades into gentleness from the 12th on, when action hero Mars slips into all-connecting, meandering, magical waters of Pisces. Pursuing dreams, romance and artistry comes more naturally than paying bills under this influence. Forceful, direct action won’t hit targets (or even appeal). Operating by guidance and/or compassion is more effective, although some people will express this influence via backhandedness, passive-aggression and playing the victim. (Not you, right?)

Mid-month, keys fall into locks that have constrained minds and hearts (from Venus and Mercury sextiling awakening Uranus). Keys don’t turn themselves, though; that is up to you.  Likely the action benefits the newly emerged you, so likely you will take it.  So what if Mars’ clash with Saturn on the 15th sends you colliding into a wall, or judgmental criticism, or a belief that’s blocking your way? Knowledge is power. Reroute. Tweak your perspective (that key in the lock, remember). Take a reality check. Ask for guidance.

Paradoxes swell again around the 19th and 20th, when unfettered desire and indulgence mingle with fairy-tale ambitions and lead back to … observer mode.  The previous week’s heart and mind unlocking has freed up lots of space, and Venus and Jupiter are determined to fill it, and ask for more, more, more. Higher forces may be collaborating to that end as well. Venus’ lover Mars is meeting transcendent Neptune, which drenches actions and drive with escapism, compassion and magic. Any romantic developments are over the top, while desire fulfillment has an unreal flavor (perhaps heaven-sent, perhaps delusional; we won’t care which at the time).

Much as we may want to soak in this space out of time, the cosmos invites us not to lose ourselves in it. The Aquarian New Moon follows as chaser on the 20th, bringing detachment to the otherworldly and refreshing our ability to see the big picture and proceed from a base of friendship.

The opportunity to observe continues for the rest of the month, after Mercury stations retrograde on the 21st.  The cosmic messenger is drawing attention to our information flow, technology and how we get around. He may well take us back over matters we have experienced since the 6th, when he crossed the degree where his retrograde will end on February 11.

The usual advisories apply:  Confusion and misunderstandings abound, so don’t assume you and other people are in agreement, even if you’re using the same words. Follow up if you send a message that goes unanswered. Allow extra time for travel.  Back up data. Take a deep breath before you react to technology breakdowns, or traffic problems, or the suspicion that someone has lied to you. Put off major agreements and purchases if you can. On a positive note, do research and tie up old business like a demon. All of these possibilities will happen quickly and easily, because Mercury is retrograding in his natural element of air.

The remainder of the month alternates moments of stabilizing with waves of compassion and magic, more mental shape-shifting and, ultimately, self-awareness.

The stabilizing moments may feel like tying down a hot air balloon that has come in for a landing. (Watch for this on the 23rd and again on the 30th, when structure could be imposed on relationship developments flowing out of mid-month.)

The waves engulf our hearts, desires and interactions with gentleness and kindness. They come from Venus entering Pisces on the 27th, where she will float into next month and her next date with her lover Mars. Venus is said to be exalted in Pisces, which brings a poetic, magical and heavenly approach to money, artistry, values and relationships. What transpires now in those areas flows out of the bliss, the out-of-time sensations and the daring to ask for more that occurred on the 19th.

The end of the month rattles our cages again and puts another key in the lock. Think about the shape-shifting you’ve undergone; with that in mind; update the way you look at yourself and the defining words you use.  Align with forces greater than your conscious will and drive. Bold, empowering action results, with the confidence that comes from recently honed, unshakable self-awareness.

That New Year’s optimism isn’t dying back. You leave January still possessing the notion — the conviction — that you can build, for once, and at last. Adopt this mantra to keep your faith:

It is as it is, I am as I am, and now is my time.

2014 Capricorn New Moon

December 21-22, 2014

0 Capricorn 6

5:35 PM PST / 8:35 PM EST / 1:35 AM GMT

With the 2014 Capricorn New Moon, mid-December’s wild developments go from shifts and shocks to game plan for the winter and a new way of being.  The launch is clarifying, simplifying and sober(ing). The stillness in the air isn’t cold and calculating, though. (Well, not entirely.) A motivating undercurrent is palpable, as if destiny and desire are working hand in hand.

The transition promises to fall into place more quickly and solidly than you might think going into it. As if someone is flipping a switch, we are transitioning from What Was into What Is, in an instant. What Is sets us on an ascending path leading into the spring.  As the first week goes on, you’ll realize you’re already on the path, and your heart and mind are on board with it.

The first moments, though, may wind you. Odds are your head is still spinning from the head-spinning, accelerated whirlwind of restructuring that preceded the New Moon. That whirlwind isn’t going away, or rather, the effects of it are not. They color the New Moon and, because the Moon happens on the solstice, the entire winter season as well.

The whirlwind is spinning off change agents Uranus and Pluto confronting first each other and then Venus, ruler of our hearts, desires and values. The first confrontation is hardly new; that duo has been putting us through pervasive, volatile and unavoidable transformation since 2012.  By this point, we’ve largely come to accept that life is not going back to the contours it once held. We’re even beginning to embrace and work with the new circumstances.

This latest tectonic plate shifting, though, is packing a disorienting wallop, shoving, yanking and catapulting us into the new conditions and new ways of proceeding that are What Is. Instabilities in our foundations have roared open. Long-teetering situations have cracked apart.  We have become unmoored from what we’ve known, stood on and relied on.

Previous navigational systems are down. We’re moving forward, gingerly, on strange turf and in new and eerily unfamiliar ways. Professional intuitives in my acquaintance are discovering that their prior modes of accessing information have outright disappeared, replaced by unfamiliar methods. For everyone, in some way, our means of bridging realities — imagination and productivity, ideas and words, the energetic/spiritual realm and the mundane world — has been, quite simply, blown up.

A primal, instinctive, cellular demand has taken hold, too. It’s laying waste to what we can no longer tolerate and igniting what we must have to survive and thrive. Our hearts and bank accounts must be fed, our values and worth respected and affirmed – not merely sufficiently, though that’s a desirable start; abundantly.

The New Moon formalizes the changed conditions and encourages acclimating to them. The Moon’s ruler, Saturn, lord of structure, is all about the formality and acceptance.  He’s in the final minutes of Scorpio, bearing down on the issues of sharing, cost, return, reciprocity, trust and intimacy that he has pressured for the past two years. He’s moving to Sagittarius on the 23rd, but this pressure remains in the solstice chart and in the winter. The intensity signals:  there’s no going back; we are at the end of an era.

Motivation abounds to get with the program. The New Moon has a fiercely instigating quality, for several reasons. First, it falls on the solstice, the start date of the winter season. Second, it takes place at the very first degree of Capricorn, and barely minutes into it at that. The location graces this moon phase and this season with the rawest, most self-starting expression of the most goal-oriented sign of the zodiac.

Third, not only does it incorporate the change imperative of Uranus, Pluto and Venus, but it coincides with awakening Uranus going direct. The impact is akin to a ship moving forward with such force that it yanks the anchor free, or a trebuchet (look it up) flinging us over a barrier into unexplored territory. Sudden, fierce, initiating, motivating; watch for all those qualities to color your life as the year ends.

Clarity comes promptly. Christmas Eve and Day resound with it. We know our heart’s desires on a profoundly basic level, and that includes the people and situations we want and value most. Cobwebs shake loose. Messages and insight erupt out of nowhere or the most unlikely places.  We know, and we feel, and we act accordingly. Step by astonishing step, into the new year, into the new phase, into our new lives.

2014 Gemini Full Moon

December 6, 2014
4:26 AM PST / 7:26 AM EST / 12:26 PM GMT
14 Gemini 17 / 14 Sagittarius 17

This month’s Gemini Full Moon spotlights the quality and power of our thoughts. Forget the old saying that ends “words will never hurt me.” This Moon reminds us that they are not theoretical concepts, but forces that touch us deeply and shape our experience of reality.

Full Moons always culminate a cycle and bring emotions and story lines to a head. This one is particularly high-energy, catalyzing and clearing.

Its scope is enormous:  It’s inspiring awareness of the chatter in our heads, along with clarity about who we are.  It’s inflaming situations, beliefs and prejudices past the point of toleration, inflaming vocal reactions and demanding that we see and respect our interconnectedness. (Hence protests in the streets nationwide in solidarity with geographically distant grand jury decisions.) It’s burning off repetitive thinking, parroting and default patterns, or at least giving our chains a good hard yank that forces a good hard look and rethinking. It’s igniting optimism and a hunger for more positive, expansive outlook. And it’s sparking relationship issues, particularly arising from longstanding wounds or involving notions of commitment and equal partnership.

The highly personal, self-reflective aspect comes from the Moon’s ruler, Mercury, standing at the center of the activity. (He’s only a degree away from the Sun and off an opposition with the Moon.)  We’re not merely in our heads, though; his position adds a lovely harmony between mind and emotion, thanks to his easy flow with the Sun’s ruler, Jupiter.

The flow from bigger-is-better Jupiter is also mushrooming this Moon’s effects into cartoonish territory. His influence encourages good humor, grandiosity, and going for more, more, more. That’s a raging, energy-amping, life-awakening blaze right now. As happened in October with the Aries lunar eclipse, this Full Moon locks into another grand trine in fire, blazing from Uranus  (epiphanies & breaks) and the south side (what we’re moving away from) in Aries, to Juno (archetype of the spouse) and Jupiter in Leo, to the Sun (our masculine side) and Mercury (how we communicate and get around) in Sagittarius.

This round robin of energy feeds fieriness in thoughts and emotions — from frustration, self-righteous anger, prejudice and political outrage to lust for life and adventure, high spirits and passion of any kind.  It’s motivating, activating, energizing and warming, causing impulses to spark and flare and rush out without premeditation, delivering the courage and firepower to think and speak boldly.

The fire trine is pumping up the individuating, liberating, rebellious impulses we’ve all been feeling. They’re one end of the tectonic plate-shifting building from the Uranus/Pluto square, which will be exact for the 6th out of 7 times on the 15th. The imperative to change has been hammering our foundations since the squares began in 2012. By this point the process has morphed from disruption and turmoil to our coming to grips with what has changed and taking action to deal with it. As the cosmic conveyor belt takes us to this next stage of remodeling and restructuring, the grand fire trine is inciting us to pick up our tools, knock down teetering walls and crumbling plates and commandeer the next construction phase.

There’s a significant therapeutic element, too. That comes from the tight, dynamic link between the Moon’s ruler Mercury and Chiron, which represents our abiding wound and the challenge of mastering it to become fully human. The time is ripe for moving past isolationist thinking and realizing (a) you are not alone and (b) we are all in this life together. Rewriting your scripts and backstory is also timely. The Mercury/Chiron push encourages neutralizing wounded thought patterns and hitting a point of peace and resolution.

Dump your mental trash. Be mindful of what you are exposed to in your information flow. Ditch avenues of communication that are punching your wounds, or reinforcing limiting thoughts, or fouling your mood, outlook or experience of life. Stop engaging with people who make you feel bad or throw negativity around like monkeys flinging you-know-what in a cage.

Pay attention to where your thoughts gravitate, to the words you routinely use, and to the beliefs you speak and live. If you find negativity, intervene. Reframe and rephrase like a demon.  Do a burning ritual in a fire pit or tall, safe bowl. Burn away the bad things you say about yourself, your life, your prospects, other people. Factor in forgiveness, too. Don’t worry about going overboard. That vibe is in the air. Work it to your advantage.
